To create a bootable macOS installer, download the full installer app from Apple, connect a spare USB drive, and run the matching createinstallmedia command in Terminal. The process erases the selected drive. You can then start a compatible Mac from that installer and install macOS. A bootable drive is useful when other installation methods fail or when installing on multiple Macs; Apple says it is not needed for a routine upgrade or reinstall.
Before you begin: decide whether you need a bootable installer
A bootable installer is a USB flash drive or other secondary volume prepared to start a Mac and launch a macOS installer. It can help when other installation methods fail or when you need to install macOS on multiple Macs without downloading the installer again. For an ordinary upgrade or reinstall, macOS Recovery is an alternative, and Apple says a bootable installer is not required. Apple Support: Create a bootable installer for macOS
Choose the macOS version only after checking that it is compatible with the specific Mac you intend to install it on. An incompatible version may fail to install or show a circle-with-line symbol at startup.
What you need
- A compatible Mac to download the full macOS installer and create the media.
- A spare USB flash drive or other secondary volume. Apple says 32 GB has enough space for any macOS installer; 16 GB is enough for most earlier versions. The creation process erases the selected volume, so do not use one with files you need to keep. Apple Support: Create a bootable installer for macOS
- An administrator account, because the Terminal command uses
sudo. - An internet connection during installation. Apple says the installer needs to obtain firmware and other information specific to the Mac model. Apple Support: Create a bootable installer for macOS
Download the full macOS installer
The file you need is the full installer app, usually named Install [Version Name] and stored in the Applications folder. If it opens when the download finishes, quit it rather than proceeding with installation; leave the app in Applications for the next step.

Apple documents several ways to download macOS, including Terminal, the App Store, and browser links for some versions. On macOS Catalina 10.15 or later, you can use Terminal to request a particular full installer:
softwareupdate --fetch-full-installer --full-installer-version [number]
Replace [number] with the version number Apple lists for the macOS release you want. To see full installers available for that Mac, run:

Create the bootable installer
1. Prepare the target volume
Connect the spare drive directly to the Mac. For the example command, rename its volume MyVolume. If you keep its existing name, substitute its actual mounted path wherever the command shows /Volumes/MyVolume. Be certain you have selected the expendable drive: the command erases it.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
2. Run the command for your installer
Open Terminal and use the command that matches the installer app you downloaded. Apple’s current example for macOS Tahoe is:
sudo /Applications/Install macOS Tahoe.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/MyVolume
The app name in the command must match the name in Applications. Apple lists version-specific commands for macOS 27 Golden Gate, Tahoe 26, Sequoia 15, Sonoma 14, Ventura 13, Monterey 12, Big Sur 11, Catalina 10.15, Mojave 10.14, High Sierra 10.13, and OS X El Capitan 10.11. Use the command on Apple’s guide for your chosen installer rather than adapting the Tahoe example blindly. The El Capitan command includes --applicationpath; Apple also says that option may be needed when creating media from macOS Sierra 10.12.6 or earlier. 3. Approve erasure and wait for completion
- Enter your administrator password when Terminal requests it. The characters will not appear as you type.
- At the prompt asking to erase the volume, type
Yto confirm. - If macOS asks whether Terminal may access a removable volume, allow access.
- Wait until Terminal reports that the install media is available, then eject the drive.
Troubleshoot installer creation
- “Command not found”: Check that you used the command for the installer version you downloaded and that the app is in Applications with the expected name.
- The installer is reported as invalid: Apple advises deleting it, repairing the startup disk with Disk Utility, and downloading the installer again.
- The command cannot find the target volume: Check that the drive is connected and mounted, then replace
/Volumes/MyVolumewith its actual volume path—or rename itMyVolume. - The volume has insufficient space: Apple says 32 GB is enough for any installer and 16 GB for most earlier versions; Terminal will indicate if more space is required.
Apple’s creation instructions and version-specific commands are collected in its bootable installer guide.

| Mac type | How to open startup options | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| Apple silicon | Shut down, then press and hold the power button until startup options appear. | Select the bootable installer and continue. |
| Other Macs, including Intel models | Shut down, turn on, and immediately hold Option (Alt). Release it when bootable volumes appear. | Select the bootable installer. |
If an Intel Mac with the Apple T2 Security Chip will not start from external media, use Startup Security Utility to allow external or removable media. Apple’s guide covers both Apple-silicon and other Macs, and notes that an internet connection is required during installation for model-specific firmware and information. Clean install or reinstall from Recovery?
Reinstall without erasing
If your goal is to repair or reinstall macOS while keeping your files and settings, start macOS Recovery and choose Reinstall macOS without erasing the disk first. Apple identifies Recovery as an option when Software Update fails or the Mac will not start with a working operating system. The precise Recovery startup steps depend on the Mac’s hardware; Apple’s cited step-by-step Recovery guide here is specifically for Apple-silicon Macs. Apple Support: How to download and install macOS
Erase and reinstall on Apple silicon
A clean install commonly means erasing the internal volume before reinstalling macOS. Apple’s Apple-silicon Recovery instructions describe this sequence:
- Shut down the Mac, then hold the power button until the system volume and Options appear.
- Select Options and continue into Recovery; connect to the internet.
- Open Disk Utility, select the relevant volume, choose Erase, select APFS, and erase the volume group.
- Quit Disk Utility and choose Reinstall macOS.
Erasing deletes user accounts, network settings, files, and folders. Back up anything you want to keep before proceeding. Apple also notes that Recovery may reinstall an earlier macOS version; use Software Update afterward if you need to upgrade. These exact Recovery steps are for Apple-silicon Macs, so Intel Mac owners should follow Apple’s instructions for their hardware rather than assume the same screen sequence. For this procedure, the practical choice is a spare 32 GB or larger drive whose connector works with your Mac, and whose contents you are willing to erase. Apple’s storage guidance is 32 GB for any installer and 16 GB for most earlier versions; it does not compare specific drive brands, models, speeds, or durability. A USB-C adapter is relevant only if the ports on your Mac and the drive do not match.
