Neither business mix makes one stock universally better. The choice also depends on valuation, your portfolio, risk tolerance and investment horizon—and the latest quarterly results cover different periods, so they are not a like-for-like scorecard.
How Caterpillar and Deere differ
Both companies make industrial equipment and finance some customer purchases. Their main distinction is the markets their equipment serves: Caterpillar’s business spans construction, resource industries and power and energy, while Deere has substantial agricultural exposure as well as turf, construction and forestry. Those differences affect which economic cycles and customer spending patterns matter most to each company.

| Company | Reported equipment businesses | Other relevant exposure |
|---|---|---|
| Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT) | Construction Industries; Resource Industries; Energy & Transportation | Financial Products, including equipment-linked financing |
| Deere & Company (NYSE: DE) | Production & Precision Agriculture; Small Agriculture & Turf; Construction & Forestry | Financial Services, including equipment-linked financing |
The labels and boundaries of the companies’ reported segments differ, so they should not be treated as directly equivalent categories. Both manufacturers also have financing businesses: their results can be affected not only by equipment demand but by customers’ ability to obtain and repay credit.

What the latest reported quarters show
The latest quarterly releases covered different reporting windows: Caterpillar’s second quarter ended June 30, 2026, while Deere’s second quarter ended May 3, 2026. The figures are useful snapshots, but they are not results for identical periods.

| Measure | Caterpillar Q2 2026 | Deere Q2 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Quarter ended; release date | June 30, 2026; August 4, 2026 | May 3, 2026; May 21, 2026 |
| Sales and revenues | $20.543 billion, up 24% year over year | $13.369 billion, up 5% year over year |
| Profit measure reported | Operating profit of $4.295 billion, up 50% year over year | Net income of $1.773 billion, down 2% year over year |
These profit measures are different—operating profit for Caterpillar and net income for Deere—so comparing the dollar amounts would be misleading. Nor does stronger reported sales growth alone establish which stock is the better investment.
What was behind the reported movements
Caterpillar attributed its higher sales and operating profit mainly to higher sales volume. Its reported operating profit also included $392 million of expected recoveries related to IEEPA tariffs. That item matters when assessing how much of the quarter’s reported increase reflects underlying operating performance rather than tariff-recovery effects. Caterpillar Chairman and CEO Joe Creed said in the August 4 release that the company had generated more than $20 billion in sales and revenues in a single quarter for the first time in its history; that is management’s characterization of the result.

Deere’s total net income declined even though its Small Agriculture & Turf and Construction & Forestry segments showed growth. Its Production & Precision Agriculture results were weaker amid challenges in global agricultural markets. This illustrates why a company-wide figure can obscure shifts among businesses with different demand conditions. Deere Chairman and CEO John May described the company’s performance as demonstrating the strength of its diversified portfolio; that is management’s view, not an independent conclusion.

For fiscal 2025, Caterpillar reported sales and revenues of $67.589 billion. Deere reported net income attributable to Deere & Company of $5.027 billion, down from $7.100 billion in fiscal 2024. These are different financial measures and should not be compared as if they were a matched revenue or earnings ranking.

Deere’s May 21, 2026 second-quarter release gave fiscal 2026 net income guidance of $4.5 billion to $5.0 billion. That is management guidance, not a realized result. Guidance and past earnings can change as market conditions evolve and do not guarantee future performance.

CAT may align more closely with infrastructure, mining or power exposure
Caterpillar’s construction, resource-industry, and power-and-energy businesses make it a more direct fit for an investor seeking those equipment exposures. Its results can be sensitive to construction and mining activity, infrastructure and energy investment, and customers’ capital-spending decisions.

DE may align more closely with agricultural equipment exposure
Deere’s Production & Precision Agriculture and Small Agriculture & Turf businesses provide more direct agricultural exposure, with additional construction and forestry activity. That mix can appeal to an investor who wants agricultural equipment exposure, but it also brings sensitivity to agricultural market conditions and farmers’ willingness and ability to invest.
These are business-exposure distinctions, not buy or sell recommendations. Either stock can be affected by several end markets, and existing holdings may already give your portfolio substantial exposure to industrial companies, agriculture, commodities or capital spending.

How to compare CAT and DE before investing
- Start with end markets. Identify whether your portfolio needs construction, mining and power exposure, agricultural equipment exposure, or a mix. Do not assume the two companies are interchangeable just because both manufacture heavy equipment.
- Read segment results, not only company totals. Check which businesses are growing or weakening, and look for the stated drivers—such as volume, pricing, currency or unusual items—before interpreting a change in sales or profit.
- Include financing risk. Review each company’s finance operation and consider how customer credit conditions and equipment demand might affect it through an economic downturn.
- Compare financial strength on consistent definitions. Use the companies’ filings to examine cash generation, dividends, repurchases, debt and finance-segment risks. Match periods and accounting measures rather than comparing unrelated headline numbers.
- Check valuation using the same date and method. A price-to-earnings comparison, an enterprise-value measure or a cash-flow measure can lead to different impressions, especially when earnings are cyclical. Use synchronized share prices and comparable calculation bases; the reported operating results above do not establish which stock is cheaper.
- Fit the position to your own plan. Consider your time horizon, risk tolerance, diversification and ability to withstand a downturn. Neither past performance nor company outlook removes the possibility of losses.
Risks that apply to both stocks
- Cyclicality: Construction, mining, agriculture and other customers may defer equipment purchases when demand or financing conditions weaken.
- Different market conditions: Deere’s Q2 2026 release described continuing challenges in global agricultural markets, while the quarter’s segment results varied. One segment’s growth does not mean all of Deere’s markets are improving.
- Unusual contributors to results: Caterpillar’s Q2 2026 operating profit included expected tariff recoveries as well as benefits attributed mainly to higher volume. Separate such effects from recurring operations when evaluating earnings.
- Financing and credit: Equipment sales and finance operations connect both companies to customers’ access to credit and ability to make payments.
- Company-specific risks: The complete risk factors in each issuer’s filings cover more than a quarterly release can. Historical results and outlooks do not assure future performance.
