First identify what is failing: a screen that turns off needs a display setting, an app that stops updating needs a background-activity check, and a lost Wi-Fi, mobile, Bluetooth, or USB connection needs troubleshooting for that specific connection. On a Pixel, raise the screen timeout in Settings; on other Android phones, menu names and options vary by manufacturer and version.
If the screen goes dark
Increase the screen timeout
On a Pixel, open Settings > Display & touch > Screen timeout and choose a longer interval. The available choices vary by device. This setting controls how long the screen stays on while idle; it does not keep an app or data connection active. Google’s Pixel screen and display instructions are specific to Pixel phones, so consult your manufacturer’s guidance for another Android model.

Use Screen attention if your Pixel supports it
Pixel 4 and later offer Screen attention, which can keep the display on while you are looking at it. Google says it works best when the screen is well-lit but not in direct sunlight. This is a Pixel-specific option, not a universal Android setting. See Google’s instructions for Pixel display settings.
If the dashboard app pauses or stops updating
Check Battery Saver
Battery Saver can limit or turn off background activity, and Google says apps and network connections may experience delays while it is enabled. Check whether it is on, especially if the dashboard stops updating when the phone is idle. Google Android Help explains Battery Saver’s effects.

Review the app’s background battery setting
On a Pixel, open Settings > Apps > [dashboard app] > App battery usage > Allow background usage. Depending on the app and device, the setting may show a label such as Optimized. Allowing more background use can help diagnose an app that pauses when unused, but it may increase battery consumption. Other Android manufacturers use different menus and controls. Google’s Pixel app battery instructions document the Pixel path.
If a connection drops, identify its type first
Android can share a connection by Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth, or USB. The checks are different for each, so note which link is actually failing rather than treating every dropout as a screen-timeout problem. Google’s Android tethering guidance covers these connection types.

- Wi-Fi hotspot: Check the phone providing the hotspot and the device joining it, along with the hotspot’s range and settings.
- Mobile data: Check signal and whether the phone has mobile data service at the location.
- Bluetooth: Check that Bluetooth remains enabled and that the paired devices remain connected.
- USB: Check the cable, port, and the phone’s USB behavior. A charging cable or port may not provide the data connection your setup needs.
Battery Saver may delay network connections, but the available guidance does not establish one universal fix for Wi-Fi or cellular dropouts. If the problem persists, check the relevant phone, hotspot or router, cable, carrier service, and signal for your particular setup. Google generally advises plugging devices in while tethering and turning tethering off when finished.

A dashboard phone may be running its display, navigation or GPS, an app, and tethering at once; those uses draw power. Use charging equipment compatible with the phone and the vehicle’s power port. Google’s Pixel guidance recommends compatible USB-C charging equipment and notes that other power sources, including laptops, can charge more slowly. The right charger depends on the specific phone and vehicle, so a wattage cannot be recommended universally. Google’s Pixel charging guidance.

Keep the phone cool during extended use. Google warns that heat can increase battery drain and damage the battery. Google’s battery-care guidance covers temperature and battery use.

On supported Pixel 6 and later devices, USB Protection under Advanced Protection prevents a new USB data connection from being established while the phone is locked; charging continues. A data connection established while the phone is unlocked can remain active after locking. Google says implementation can vary by manufacturer. This narrow USB security behavior does not explain general Wi-Fi or mobile-data dropouts. Google’s Pixel USB Protection instructions.
