How to Stop an Android Keyboard Saving Typed Words or Sending Them to the Cloud

By Freedom251 Team · · 8 min read

To stop an Android keyboard from remembering words, first identify which keyboard is active, then clear its learned-data profile. To prevent copies from being stored online, disable that keyboard’s cloud backup or synchronisation separately. These controls are different: deleting learned words resets the keyboard’s local prediction model, while cloud and product-improvement settings govern data leaving the device.

The exact labels vary by Android release, phone manufacturer and keyboard version. The procedures below cover Gboard, Samsung Keyboard and Microsoft SwiftKey, plus the checks that apply to any keyboard.

1. Identify the keyboard that is actually receiving your keystrokes

Android can have several keyboards installed, but only one is normally selected as the default input method. Changing settings for an unused keyboard will not change what happens to your typing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings.
  2. Use the Settings search box and look for On-screen keyboard, Default keyboard or Keyboard list and default.
  3. Open the keyboard-management page and note the keyboard marked as selected or default.
  4. Open that keyboard’s own settings. You can usually reach them by tapping the keyboard’s name, or by opening any text field and tapping its gear icon.

Menu names differ between Android builds. If a path below is not present, use the Settings search field for terms such as learned words, personalized data, predictions, backup or privacy.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

2. Understand the three different places typing data can go

A keyboard’s learned dictionary, its optional cloud service and an app’s own data collection are separate layers. You need to check each layer that matters to you.

Learned words and the local prediction profile

As you type, a keyboard may retain new words, names and phrases so it can suggest them later. Clearing learned data removes that keyboard profile from the device. It does not erase messages you already sent, notes you saved, browser history or text held by another app.

Cloud backup and cross-device synchronisation

Some keyboards can upload learned words or phrases so they can be restored on a new phone or shared with other signed-in devices. Turning off this service stops future backup or synchronisation; it is a separate action from clearing the local profile. If data was uploaded previously, look for the keyboard’s account, remote-data deletion or sign-out controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Optional product-improvement sharing

A keyboard may offer a setting that sends typing snippets or diagnostics to help improve the product. This is not the same as the learned dictionary or a backup service. Disable it separately when the keyboard exposes that choice.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

3. Gboard: delete on-device learned words and review privacy controls

Clear Gboard’s learned data

  1. Open any app with a text box, such as a message draft or search field.
  2. Tap the Gboard gear on the keyboard toolbar. If the gear is hidden, tap the four-square or three-dot toolbar button and then choose Settings.
  3. Open Privacy.
  4. Tap Delete learned words and data and confirm the reset.

Google documents this control as the way to clear the on-device data Gboard has saved for learning. After confirmation, words that Gboard had learned on that device should no longer be part of its personalised prediction profile.

Review the rest of Gboard’s Privacy page

Stay on the Privacy screen and read every optional sharing or personalisation control shown by your installed version. The deletion command is a reset of learned data; it does not, by itself, establish that every network-related feature is disabled in every Gboard release. Turn off any optional sharing choice that you do not want, using the label and explanation displayed on your phone.

What to expect after the reset

Gboard may still show ordinary dictionary words and suggestions based on the current language. Clearing learned data is not the same as disabling all suggestions, autocorrection or spell checking. If you want no suggestion strip, look for the separate suggestion or text-correction controls in Gboard settings and change only those you intend to change.

4. Samsung Keyboard: erase the personalised prediction profile

Clear Samsung’s learned words

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap General management.
  3. Choose Language and input.
  4. Tap On-screen keyboard.
  5. Select Samsung Keyboard.
  6. Open Predictive text.
  7. Tap Clear personalised data (some releases use the spelling personalized).

Samsung states that the phone automatically saves words as learned words while you type. The clear command removes that learned prediction profile; it does not remove text already stored in other applications.

  • Travel Must-Have for People On the Go: A must-have travel accessory for flights, flying, airports, air travel, airplanes, planes, international trips, cruises, and long travel days. Key gadget for your airport haul, travel accessories and must-haves.

Use Erase personalized predictions when that label appears

Samsung also documents an Erase personalized predictions control in keyboard settings. Use it when available to remove the prediction profile. The wording and location can vary by One UI and keyboard version, so search within Samsung Keyboard settings for erase, clear or personalized if you do not see the option under Predictive text.

Turn off suggestions separately

Erasing the profile and hiding suggestions are separate choices. If you also want Samsung Keyboard to stop displaying predictive suggestions, turn off Predictive text after clearing the data. Disabling that switch changes what appears above the keyboard; it is not a substitute for erasing words already learned.

5. Microsoft SwiftKey: stop cloud backup and optional improvement sharing

Disable Backup & Sync

  1. Open the Microsoft SwiftKey app from the app drawer or Settings.
  2. Tap Account.
  3. Open Backup & Sync.
  4. Uncheck or switch off Backup & Sync.

Microsoft says that when this feature is enabled, words and phrases are backed up and synchronised to signed-in devices. Turning it off prevents the service from continuing that cross-device transfer. If several phones or tablets use the same account, repeat the check on each device and confirm that the account is no longer configured to restore the profile.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Disable Help Microsoft to improve

  1. In the SwiftKey app, open Privacy.
  2. Turn off Help Microsoft to improve.

This control governs optional typing snippets or improvement sharing. It is independent of Backup & Sync, so disabling one does not automatically disable the other.

Handle data that may already be in the cloud

Microsoft states that, by default, learned typing data stays on the device. Signing in and enabling cloud services changes that arrangement. If you previously enabled those services, use SwiftKey’s account, remote-data deletion or sign-out controls to request deletion or disable cloud services. The exact controls can change with the installed app version; follow the options currently shown in your account and privacy screens.

Password fields and SwiftKey learning

SwiftKey is designed not to learn text from fields that an app correctly marks as passwords. Microsoft notes that incorrectly marked fields can be treated differently. A keyboard setting cannot repair an app that exposes a password box as ordinary text, so use the app’s own security guidance for sensitive credentials.

6. Keyboard comparison: what each control actually does

Keyboard Personalisation baseline Cloud backup or sync Learned-data deletion Optional improvement sharing
Gboard Stores learning data on the device until you delete it or change available privacy options. Review the controls shown on the Gboard Privacy page; the deletion command alone is not proof that every network feature is off. Privacy > Delete learned words and data. Check the optional sharing or personalisation controls presented in your version.
Samsung Keyboard Automatically saves words as learned words while you type. No separate cloud-backup procedure is established by the documented controls here; check your phone and Samsung account settings for any additional service your version exposes. Predictive text > Clear personalised data or Erase personalized predictions, depending on version. Use any separate diagnostics or improvement choice shown by your installed keyboard; do not assume clearing predictions changes it.
Microsoft SwiftKey Microsoft says learned typing data stays on the device by default. Requires account sign-in and enabled Account > Backup & Sync; switch that setting off to stop backup and synchronisation. Use the account, remote-data deletion or sign-out controls available in the current app when cloud data already exists. Privacy > Help Microsoft to improve can be turned off separately.

7. A complete privacy reset checklist

Use this sequence when you want the strongest practical reduction in keyboard retention without uninstalling the keyboard.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm the active keyboard. Do not rely on the keyboard icon alone; verify the selected default in Android’s keyboard settings.
  2. Clear the local learned profile. Use Gboard’s Delete learned words and data, Samsung’s Clear personalised data or Erase personalized predictions, or the equivalent control in another keyboard.
  3. Disable cloud transfer. For SwiftKey, turn off Account > Backup & Sync. For other keyboards, inspect their account and privacy screens for backup or synchronisation switches.
  4. Disable optional improvement sharing. On SwiftKey, turn off Help Microsoft to improve. On Gboard or another keyboard, read the available privacy controls and disable choices you do not want.
  5. Check signed-in devices. If a keyboard account is used on more than one device, review each device so an old installation does not restore a profile or continue synchronisation.
  6. Test the result. Type a distinctive, harmless word, close and reopen the keyboard, and check whether it is suggested. Do not use a password, recovery code or other secret for testing.

8. Troubleshooting when words keep appearing

The menu is missing

Manufacturers move controls between Android and keyboard versions. Search Settings for the exact concepts rather than following a fixed path: learned words, personalized predictions, clear personalised data, privacy and backup. Also confirm that you opened the active keyboard, not an installed alternative.

  • 【Press Down Firmly Every 30 Minutes】Use your palm or fingers to press the phone down firmly and check it's secure before letting go. Apply even pressure for a few seconds to allow the suction cup to adhere properly. To maintain the grip and prevent accidental falls, it's a good practice to periodically reapply pressure to the suction cup.

Suggestions return after you cleared them

A keyboard begins learning again as soon as you type. Reappearing suggestions may therefore be newly learned local data, a profile restored from a cloud account, or suggestions from the phone’s general dictionary rather than the erased profile. Check the relevant sync switch and repeat the test with a word that has not been entered since the reset.

Disabling Predictive text did not erase anything

On Samsung Keyboard, Predictive text controls whether suggestions are displayed. The separate clear or erase command removes the learned profile. If you only switched off Predictive text, the stored profile may still exist and can reappear when the feature is enabled later.

Cloud data was uploaded before you changed the setting

Turning off backup prevents ongoing transfer but does not automatically prove that historical copies were deleted. For SwiftKey, use the account’s remote-data deletion or sign-out controls. For any keyboard, read the account privacy screen for a deletion option and complete that step if available.

The wrong keyboard is still active

Android can switch input methods from the keyboard selector icon. Reopen Settings > On-screen keyboard (or the equivalent page), verify the default, and then apply the privacy settings to that keyboard. If you intentionally keep multiple keyboards installed, repeat the review for each one that you may select.

9. What keyboard settings cannot prevent

These controls govern the keyboard’s own learning and optional services. They do not erase or block information collected by the app in which you type.

  • Messages, posts, notes and forms that you already submitted remain in those services.
  • A browser can retain history, form data or site-side records independently of the keyboard.
  • An app, website or voice assistant may transmit text through its own systems even when keyboard learning is disabled.
  • Clearing a keyboard profile does not remove backups, screenshots or copied text stored elsewhere on the phone or in an account.
  • Password protection depends partly on the app correctly identifying a password field. SwiftKey’s protection for specified password fields cannot compensate for an app that labels a sensitive field incorrectly.

For sensitive text, review the receiving app’s privacy, history, backup and account-retention settings in addition to the keyboard controls described here.

10. The practical result

Clearing learned words handles the keyboard’s local memory. Disabling backup or synchronisation handles copies that may move between signed-in devices. Turning off optional improvement sharing handles a separate data-use choice. Perform all three checks on the active keyboard, then review the app or service where the text was entered; no keyboard-only setting can control that app’s own collection.
