In Chrome, turn off automatic current-tab sharing and remove tabs already attached to a chat. In Brave, you can disable Leo in Settings. Incognito mode and “don’t train on my data” settings are not guarantees that page content will stay off provider servers.
What actually stops page content from being sent?
Look for the control that determines whether the assistant can read a page, tab, highlighted text, browsing history, or signed-in site. If an AI feature can access that context, its cloud service may receive it to answer your request. For example, Google says Gemini in Chrome processes the URL and content of the current tab and any other tabs you share with it. Some shared content may not be visible in the browser interface. For sensitive work, use this sequence:
- Identify the feature. A sidebar assistant, page summarizer, history search, and autonomous browsing agent can have different permissions.
- Block page context. Turn off current-tab sharing, remove attached tabs, or block page visibility for the site if the browser offers that control. Verify the page is no longer shared before sending a prompt.
- Disable agent access. If the feature can navigate sites or act while signed in, turn off its browsing permission or avoid invoking it during sensitive sessions.
- Use a separate non-AI browser or profile for highly sensitive sessions. This is a practical way to keep the AI feature away from that session; it does not prove that all browser network traffic or telemetry is disabled.
- Review storage separately. Clearing local history or account activity may remove stored records, but it does not undo a cloud request that has already happened.
Turn off Gemini page sharing in Chrome
Stop sharing the current tab by default
- Open Chrome Settings.
- Go to AI innovations → Gemini in Chrome.
- Turn off Share current tab by default.
Google documents this control for preventing automatic current-tab sharing. If a conversation already has page context attached, open its shared-tabs control and remove each tab you no longer want Gemini to access. If your concern includes autonomous navigation, also turn off Let Gemini browse for you. Controls and availability can vary by platform, region, and rollout. For managed Chrome devices
Administrators can manage Gemini integration settings in the Admin console under Devices → Chrome → Settings → Generative AI → Gemini integrations. Confirm the effect of the specific policy in use: Google distinguishes blocking model improvement from blocking processing needed to provide an AI feature. Enterprise data may still be sent to Google for the feature to work even when it is not used to improve Google models. Google’s Chrome Enterprise policy information explains this distinction.

Disable Brave Leo if you do not want it reading pages
Brave says Leo can be turned off in browser Settings so it no longer appears in the sidebar or search suggestions. Its help instructions also describe Clear Leo data, which removes locally stored conversations and resets opt-in status. Menu wording can change, so check the current Settings labels. Brave’s Leo help page covers the control.
Disabling Leo is the clearer choice when you do not want to manage page-sharing prompts. If you use it, understand what context each feature sends: Brave says general chat sends prompts and conversation context to its backend; page summaries and suggested questions send the prompt and page content, including highlighted text; tab-management or history features may send titles and URLs. Brave says conversation history is stored locally unless Sync is enabled, and prompts and context are not retained on its servers, although large prompts may be briefly cached and deleted within minutes. These are Brave’s descriptions of its service and retention, not evidence that the data stays on your device.

Brave describes AI browsing as opt-in, manually invoked, and run in an isolated browser profile. Isolation may limit access to logged-in state in the main profile, but it is not the same as local-only processing: Leo’s privacy information separately describes cloud requests. Brave also warns that safeguards do not eliminate risks such as prompt injection. See Brave’s AI browsing announcement and its browser privacy policy.
Incognito and “don’t train” settings are not the same as blocking page access
Incognito does not guarantee no cloud processing
Private browsing primarily changes what the browser saves locally and how activity is linked to an account; it does not, by itself, revoke an AI assistant’s permission to process content you share with it. OpenAI’s Atlas documentation put it plainly: “Incognito doesn’t make you invisible to ChatGPT or the rest of the internet.” OpenAI’s Atlas data-controls page is historical guidance for that browser, not a current recommendation.

Model training and feature processing are separate
A setting that excludes data from model improvement does not necessarily prevent a provider from receiving it to perform the requested AI task. Google explicitly distinguishes those purposes for enterprise Chrome: data may be processed to make Gemini work even when policy prevents its use to improve Google models. To prevent a page from being sent for an answer, disable or withhold page access rather than relying only on a training preference.
Keep page access, retention, and local history distinct

Google says website information, audio, and files shared with Gemini are stored in Gemini Apps Activity when Keep Activity is on, while page content is temporarily logged to the Google Account and does not appear in Gemini Apps Activity. That distinction is a reason to inspect both sharing permissions and account activity controls rather than assuming one setting covers both. Atlas settings are legacy guidance, not a current browser option
OpenAI’s discontinuation notice said ChatGPT Atlas was scheduled to stop working on August 9, 2026. Treat its page-visibility and Browser memories instructions as applicable only to historical Atlas access, not as instructions for a currently supported browser. OpenAI advised users to move to a supported browser experience and treat cookie and session files as sensitive; it also stated that ChatGPT conversation history is separate from Atlas browser data. For context, Atlas documentation described per-site page visibility controls that stopped ChatGPT reading a site for on-page assistance and prevented new Browser memories for it; Browser memories were separately controlled. It also described on-device summaries on macOS 26 as an option that did not send web contents to OpenAI servers for summarization. The same help page stated that OpenAI deletes web contents after summarization and deletes privacy-filtered summaries within seven days. These are vendor-published descriptions of Atlas behavior, not independent audit findings. OpenAI’s Atlas data-controls page contains those legacy details.
