Choose an AI browser by tracing what each feature can access and send—not by relying on a “private” label or a single privacy promise. For every assistant, check what data leaves your device, whether you must invoke it, how long information is kept, whether it can improve models, and what you can inspect, delete, or disable. For agents that act on websites, also check whether you can watch, pause, and confirm consequential actions.
What to compare before choosing
An “AI browser” can mean an AI-first browser such as Comet or a conventional browser with an assistant or agent feature, such as Brave Leo or Gemini capabilities in Google’s ecosystem. Compare the specific feature you intend to use, not just the browser brand. A chat assistant that summarizes a page and an agent that clicks through a website have different data and control risks.

| What happens to the data? | Check retention, model training or improvement, and whether feedback is handled differently from ordinary requests. “Not used for training,” “deleted,” and “stored locally” are distinct claims, not interchangeable guarantees. |
| What controls do you have? | Look for ways to review and delete activity, clear local history, use temporary chats, change auto-delete, or turn off the assistant. |
| How much authority does an agent have? | Can it inspect pages and take actions? Can you see its session, pause it, review what it did, and approve actions with consequences? |
| How strong is the evidence? | Distinguish a current privacy policy from marketing language, and a vendor’s design description from an independent audit. Policies and features can change. |
Apply these questions to the exact feature and account you plan to use. A browser may handle ordinary browsing one way and send additional context when you ask its assistant to summarize a page or act on a site.

Brave Leo and AI browsing
Brave’s Browser Privacy Policy, stated as last updated September 23, 2026, says Brave does not collect or retain a user’s browsing history. It separately describes information Leo may receive for particular requests: page or document content may be processed for summaries and suggested questions, while tab titles and URLs may be processed for tab-management features. The policy describes prompt and context processing as ephemeral; if local conversation history is enabled, that history is stored locally. Feedback is a separate case: it can include a full conversation and has its own retention terms. Read the policy’s conditions and exceptions rather than treating “does not collect browsing history” as meaning no information is sent when you use Leo.

Brave’s AI browsing announcement, published December 10, 2025 and updated May 5, 2026, describes the feature as opt-in and manually invoked. It says AI browsing uses an isolated browsing profile and provides session-inspection and pause controls. These are the company’s descriptions of its design, not independent confirmation that the feature is risk-free.
Perplexity Comet
Perplexity’s Comet Data Privacy & Security FAQ says integrations are opt-in and can be revoked or modified. It also says browsing data may be used as needed to fulfill searches and agentic actions and to provide or improve the Comet experience, and that users can delete browsing data through Comet privacy settings. The FAQ’s revision date and all current defaults and retention periods are not established here, so inspect the live FAQ and in-product settings for the version and account you use.

Gemini and private browsing
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub, listed as updated September 24, 2026, identifies content shared from a browser as a possible category of user-provided information. It describes controls for reviewing and deleting Gemini activity, changing auto-delete, and controlling whether data are used to improve Google AI.

Google’s Privacy Policy describes Incognito as helping keep browsing private from other people using the same device, while account history and personalization are governed by separate controls. Incognito is therefore not a guarantee that content you deliberately submit to an AI feature will stay on your device or outside that service’s processing.

Extra checks for agents that take actions
An agent can interact with websites, so its permissions and confirmation steps matter as much as its data handling. Before using one, check whether you can observe the session, stop it, and approve sensitive actions rather than letting it proceed unseen.
For example, Google’s AI responsibility document describes human confirmation for sensitive actions in the Chrome agentic framework it covers, including payments and purchases, social-media posts, and credential use. That disclosure applies to the documented framework; it does not establish that every browser agent or every consequential action has the same safeguard.

Understand the limits of agent safeguards
Web pages can contain instructions that try to influence an agent, a risk commonly called prompt injection. Brave describes prompt injection as a systemic challenge and says its mitigations do not eliminate the risk. A December 8, 2025 preprint, Privacy Practices of Browser Agents, reports 30 vulnerabilities across the eight browser agents it studied, including disabled browser privacy features and sensitive information being autocompleted into form fields. That is the study’s result for its examined agents, not a current vulnerability count for every product or a ranking of today’s commercial browsers.

- List the tasks you will actually use. Separate asking questions about a page from handing an agent permission to navigate, fill forms, or submit actions.
- Trace each task’s data flow. Check whether the feature sends page content, selected text, tabs, history, or account-connected information, and whether using it is optional.
- Read retention and improvement terms. Identify what is kept, for how long, whether it can be used to improve models, and whether feedback follows different rules.
- Locate the controls before relying on the feature. Find the settings to disable it, revoke integrations, inspect or delete activity, and change local history or auto-delete.
- Test the agent’s boundaries on low-stakes tasks. Confirm that you can see and pause its work, and determine which steps require your approval before using it for payments, credentials, posting, or other consequential actions.
- Recheck after changes. Browser features, defaults, and privacy terms can change; verify the current policy and settings for your region, account, and installed version.
The available disclosures do not establish one independently proven privacy winner across current AI browsers. Most of the product-specific evidence above is from vendors describing their own policies or designs, not a standardized, current comparison of collection, retention, defaults, and security. Choose the feature whose data scope and controls match your needs, and avoid granting an agent broader access than its task requires.
