How to Check Which Chrome Features Use On-Device AI

Chrome’s On-device AI toggle manages local generative AI models, but it does not show which feature is using one right now.

To check Chrome’s on-device AI setting on a computer, open More > Settings > AI Innovations and look at On-device AI. That toggle manages Chrome’s on-device generative AI models; Google does not describe it as a live list of which features are currently using a model.

How to find the On-device AI setting

  1. Open Chrome on your computer.
  2. Select More (the three-dot menu), then Settings.
  3. Select AI Innovations.
  4. Check the On-device AI toggle.

Google identifies this toggle as the supported way to manage Chrome’s on-device generative AI models. Its Help page says it is the only supported method for managing those models: Manage on-device Generative AI models in Chrome.

What the toggle tells you—and what it does not

The setting tells you whether Chrome’s on-device generative AI model setting is on. It does not identify which feature is invoking a model at a particular moment, and Google does not document a per-feature live-use report.

Google says these models might be used for the following tasks. The list is illustrative, not a complete inventory or a guarantee that every feature is available or active on your device:

HP 14" HD Chromebook Laptop for Students, Intel Quad-Core N4120(> N4020), 4GB RAM, 64GB eMMC, WiFi, Webcam, HDMI, USB-A&C, 14 Hours Battery Life, Zoom, Chrome OS, CUE Accessories
  • Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
  • Help with writing or rephrasing text.
  • Scam warnings.
  • Summarizing web pages.
  • Organizing tabs.

Chrome has other AI experiences too. Google’s enterprise feature table includes features such as Help me write, History search settings, Tab compare, Help me read, Enhanced autofill, and Gemini in Chrome, but it does not map each feature to on-device model use. Treating that table as a list of features controlled by this toggle would overstate what it establishes: Chrome Enterprise AI features.

Why you might not see the setting

Google says On-device AI and its features are not available on every device. Chrome downloads the models only when the device meets the relevant hardware and download conditions. The Help page lists an unmetered network connection, approximately 20 GB of free disk space, and sufficient device performance as requirements; it notes that requirements may change. These are eligibility conditions, not a recommendation to upgrade or buy hardware.

The setting is per user and per device. In managed Chrome Enterprise environments, policy can govern model download and use. If the setting is missing, that alone does not prove that no Chrome AI feature is enabled.

What happens if you turn On-device AI off?

Chrome deletes its on-device generative AI model files, stops downloading them again while the setting remains off, and disables features that depend on those models. If you turn it on later, Chrome can download necessary models when the device meets the requirements. Google does not recommend locating or deleting model files manually; use the toggle instead.

ASUS 2026 15" FHD IPS Chromebook, Intel Processor Up to 2.80GHz, 4GB DDR4, 128GB Storage, HDMI, Super-Fast WiFi, Chrome OS, Pastel Silver (Renewed)
  • Intel Processor Up to 2.80GHz, 4GB DDR4, 128GB Storage
  • 15" FHD IPS Display, Intel UHD Graphics
  • 1x USB Type C, 1 x USB Type A, 1x Headphone/Microphone Combo Jack, HDMI
  • Fast WiFi and Bluetooth, Integrated Webcam
  • Chrome OS, AC Charger Included, Pastel Silver

Some Chrome AI features may continue to work when On-device AI is off because they do not depend on these on-device generative models. The toggle therefore is not a master switch for every AI experience in Chrome.

How Gemini in Chrome differs

Gemini in Chrome is a separate experience with its own settings and permissions, not another name for the On-device AI toggle. Google says page content from the current tab is shared by default when a Gemini in Chrome chat starts, and users can stop sharing a tab. A Gemini button or setting does not establish that Chrome is using an on-device model. Google documents Gemini in Chrome separately in its Gemini in Chrome Help and Gemini in Chrome settings pages. The enterprise documentation also distinguishes Gemini in Chrome and AI Mode from other Chrome AI feature families.
