To stop an AI agent from submitting a form or making a purchase, remove or narrow its access to the site, stop or take over any active task, and—if you build the agent—enforce a human-approval check outside the model before any consequential action. A request such as “ask me first” is not a technical barrier: the system must prevent submission unless valid approval is present.
Stop an agent you are already using
Use the strongest control available for the situation. A site-access prompt determines whether the agent may visit a website; it is not necessarily the same as confirmation before submitting a form, paying, booking, or changing an account. Check both controls.

- Before a task: Turn off browsing if it is not needed, block sites the agent does not need, or require permission before it visits them.
- During a task: Use the product’s Stop control if the agent is going off course. Take over the browser when you need to inspect or complete the task yourself.
- Before a consequential action: Review the destination and the exact action. Do not approve a transaction or submission you have not checked.
These controls vary by product and may change as features roll out. The current help pages are the best place to check the available settings.
ChatGPT Cloud browser
OpenAI documents separate website-access choices, including “Always ask,” “Auto approve,” and “Always allow,” plus site-specific allow and block choices. Website access permission is separate from approval for consequential actions. OpenAI says its Cloud browser is designed to request confirmation before actions with financial, legal, account, or other real-world consequences, such as a payment or booking. You can stop a task or take over the browser. Its cloud session is separate from your local browser and does not use the local browser’s existing sign-ins. Gemini in Chrome auto browse
Google documents a “Let Gemini browse for you” setting that can be turned off or on. During a run, you can click Stop or Take over task. Google says Gemini aims to request confirmation before submitting web forms, modifying data, or sending communications, and may hand off final financial transactions. The feature is experimental; Google advises monitoring important and sensitive tasks. See Google Chrome Help for current availability and instructions.
Claude in Chrome
Anthropic says a classifier checks actions against the original request, and the settings can turn off automatic approval so you can approve actions manually. Claude in Chrome can fill forms, so check the current settings and behavior before granting it access to signed-in sites. See Anthropic Support.

Make approval a real technical requirement
If you build or administer an agent, enforce authorization at the tool, runtime, or server boundary—not just in the prompt. OpenAI warns that confirmation through a function tool depends on the agent choosing to call that function. Its computer-use guidance says that when confirmation must be guaranteed, restrict the hosted browser to resources that cannot perform the action or use a browser runtime you control. A practical design separates read-only activity from consequential writes. Browsing and inspecting a page can be allowed without granting the same process authority to submit, purchase, book, send, or change data. Before executing a write, the runtime should check for a fresh human authorization tied to the specific destination and action. If approval is missing, stale, or for a different action, deny the operation by default.
Show what the person is approving
An approval request should identify the actual site and the exact operation—for example, “submit this application” or “place this order”—and expose the relevant form data or transaction details. A generic “Continue?” prompt gives too little context to catch a wrong recipient, altered amount, or unexpected submission. Leave the final transaction step to the human when the stakes warrant it.

Limit what the agent can reach and do
Approval is stronger when the agent has fewer opportunities to act. Scope access to the sites, credentials, tools, and operations needed for the task. Where possible, gate write calls by origin and keep read and write capabilities separate. Google describes origin gating and read/write separation in its Chrome architecture; Anthropic recommends permission scoping to reduce the impact of a successful prompt injection.

Treat page content, emails, and form fields as untrusted data, not as authority to change the user’s request or grant new permissions. A malicious page can try to redirect the agent, but a website cannot authorize a purchase on the user’s behalf. OpenAI says website content cannot override the user’s instructions; Anthropic similarly advises distinguishing user instructions from encountered web content. Monitor actions and preserve an audit trail
Record the action sequence and relevant evidence, such as screenshots, so an unexpected operation can be investigated. A useful work log should make it possible to determine what the agent saw, what it attempted, what authorization was checked, and whether a person approved the final action. Include controls to pause, stop, or take over a running task. Anthropic recommends logging action sequences, including screenshots; Google describes work logs and controls to pause, take over, or stop.
Use classifiers as a layer, not the gate
Prompt-injection and action classifiers can help detect suspicious instructions or behavior, but they cannot guarantee that every harmful influence will be caught. Anthropic describes classifiers as one layer of defense, and Google says its classifier cannot flag every malicious influence. They should complement—not replace—limited permissions, human review, and an independent authorization check that blocks execution.
Neither the cited vendor guidance nor the product descriptions establish a universal guarantee that an agent will never make a mistake. Treat protections as layered risk controls, and use the product-specific settings and runtime restrictions appropriate to the consequences of the task.
