Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor most PlayStation users whose devices support passkeys and who can reliably access their passkey manager, a passkey is the simplest choice. It replaces password sign-in with a device unlock. Choose 2-step verification (2SV) if passkeys are unavailable or you prefer signing in with a password and a separate code. If you use 2SV, save its backup codes before you need them.
Sony describes passkeys as a password replacement and 2SV as an additional verification step. Its support guidance does not establish that either method is universally more secure, so the practical choice is the one that fits your devices and recovery plan.

How do PlayStation passkeys and 2SV differ?
| Factor | Passkey | 2-step verification |
|---|---|---|
| Sign-in | Replaces password sign-in. You approve with a device biometric or screen-lock PIN. | Enter your account password, then a code sent by SMS or generated by an authenticator app. |
| What you need at sign-in | Access to a device or credential manager holding the passkey. | Your password and access to the registered phone or authenticator app when Sony requests a code. |
| Recovery option | Another device using the same passkey or password manager may work. | Sony provides 10 one-use backup codes. If you have neither a code nor access to the registered phone, Sony says you may need to contact support. |
| Feature caveat | Not compatible with Sony’s Password at Checkout feature. | Sony’s support guidance does not identify this passkey-related checkout conflict for 2SV. |
Sony’s support pages describe how each method works but do not provide a comparative security study. Avoid treating either option as a proven security winner; weigh convenience, compatibility, and whether you can recover access if a device is lost. Choose a passkey if your devices support it
A passkey is a good fit if you use current compatible devices and can reliably access the password or credential manager where it is stored. Sony supports passkey sign-in on PS5, PS4, the PlayStation website, the PlayStation App, and Remote Play for Mac. Sony says most mobile devices running iOS 16 or later or Android 9 or later are supported. You can add multiple passkeys through Account Management.

Choose 2SV if passkeys are unavailable or you prefer a code
Sony directs users whose device does not support passkeys to its 2SV instructions. 2SV may also suit you if you prefer keeping password sign-in and approving access with an SMS or authenticator-app code. The trade-off is that you must be able to reach the second factor when Sony asks for it.
Check the checkout trade-off
If you use Password at Checkout, consider that setting before enabling a passkey: Sony says the feature is incompatible with accounts that have passkeys enabled.

What can interrupt passkey sign-in?
Passkeys rely on both device support and access to the credential manager holding the passkey. Sony notes that some hardware security keys, some Android-to-Windows combinations, outdated browsers, and Remote Play for Mac may cause trouble. For browser sign-in, Sony advises using a current version of Safari, Chrome, or Edge. It also cautions against using an Android PIN code as a passkey.
If a passkey fails, consult Sony’s passkey troubleshooting and fallback guidance. Sony says users can disable passkey sign-in and create a password to return to password sign-in. Do not assume that a particular hardware security key will work with PlayStation; Sony says some may encounter issues.

How to enable a PlayStation passkey
- From a browser: Sign in to Account Management, open Security, enable Sign in with Passkey, choose Create a Passkey, and follow the prompts.
- On PS5: Open Settings > Users & Accounts > Account > Security > Sign in with Passkey, then scan the QR code with a mobile device and follow the instructions.
- To manage, add, or remove passkeys, use Account Management. Sony’s guide explains how to turn passkey sign-in off and create a password if you want to return to password sign-in.
Scan only QR codes you trust. Sony warns that fake voucher or in-game offer QR codes can be used to steal account access or personal information. See its security best practices.
How to enable 2-step verification
Sony’s setup guide offers SMS and authenticator-app verification. In Account Management, open Security, select 2-step Verification Status, and choose a method. For SMS, enter and verify a mobile number; for an authenticator app, scan its QR code and verify a code. Record the backup codes during setup.

If you use a passkey
If the original phone is lost, another device that uses the same passkey or password manager may let you sign in. Whether that works depends on having access to that credential on the other device. Sony’s passkey support page covers sign-in on another device and account recovery.

If you use 2SV
Sony provides 10 backup codes, each usable once. Save them somewhere you can reach if your phone is unavailable. Sony asks for a 2SV code at certain events: the first sign-in after activation, a sign-in after you manually sign out, a password reset, and changes to your sign-in ID or online ID. The code expires 10 minutes after the sign-in attempt. If you have no backup code and cannot access the registered phone, Sony says account recovery may require contacting support. See PlayStation 2SV troubleshooting.
Can you switch methods later?
Yes. Sony says you can disable passkey sign-in and create a password. Its 2SV instructions also allow you to deactivate and reactivate 2SV to choose another verification method. If you switch, make sure the replacement method works and that you can access its recovery option before relying on it.
