To stop AirPods from automatically moving between your iPhone, iPad, and Mac, change the connection preference on each device: connect the AirPods, open their settings, and select When Last Connected to This [device]. The setting applies per device, so repeat it wherever you want to prevent automatic switching.

Tap Connect to This iPhone or Connect to This iPad, then choose When Last Connected to This iPhone or When Last Connected to This iPad.

If you do not see the connection option, look under Audio & Routing. Depending on your software version, you can also open Settings → Bluetooth, tap the information button next to your AirPods, and choose When Last Connected. If the option is not shown in the main AirPods settings, check Audio & Routing or open your AirPods’ Bluetooth device options. Apple describes these alternate locations in its AirPods guide and support article.

Use the setting that matches the device taking over
Not every unwanted audio change is the same kind of automatic switching. These controls address different destinations:

Apple documents these distinct controls in its AirPods device-switching instructions. The Apple TV and Vision Pro options are not substitutes for the iPhone, iPad, or Mac When Last Connected setting.

Why AirPods switch—and how to choose them manually
With supported AirPods, Apple devices signed into the same Apple Account can connect to the device you are listening to. For example, starting audio on an iPhone while music is playing on a Mac can move the AirPods to the iPhone; an incoming call can also prompt audio to move to the iPhone. Apple says switching should not happen automatically during a conversation such as a phone call, FaceTime call, or video conference.
You can still choose AirPods manually. Use the AirPlay or audio-output controls on iPhone or iPad, Bluetooth or Control Center on Mac, or the relevant audio controls on Apple Watch and Apple TV. Keep the AirPods nearby and ready to use. If audio moves away from an iPhone or iPad, the Moved to notice may offer a button to return the connection to the AirPods.

Check compatibility and account setup
Apple’s support article, published April 16, 2026, lists AirPods 2, 3, and 4 (both models), all AirPods Pro models, and all AirPods Max models as supporting automatic switching among iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and Vision Pro. Apple requires supported devices to use current operating-system versions and the same Apple Account with two-factor authentication. See Apple’s compatibility and setup guidance.
Apple’s separate Mac setup article covers AirPods 2 and later and AirPods Pro switching among Mac, iPhone, and iPad, and also requires the same Apple Account with two-factor authentication. Its older minimum-version details are not a universal requirement for newer AirPods models; use the current compatibility guidance for your devices.
