If your AirPods keep disconnecting from your iPhone, first check whether they are actually losing connection or automatically switching audio to another Apple device. Then work through the basics—iPhone software, charging, Bluetooth and audio output—before restarting, re-pairing or resetting the AirPods. Use the reset steps for your exact model; firmware updates install automatically when Apple’s conditions are met.
1. Check whether your AirPods switched to another Apple device
AirPods that are signed in to the same Apple Account as your other supported Apple devices can switch between them automatically. Audio may move when, for example, you start playback on another device or receive a call. That can feel like a disconnection even though the AirPods have connected elsewhere.

On your iPhone, open Settings, tap your AirPods near the top of the screen, then tap Connect to This iPhone and choose When Last Connected to This iPhone. Menu availability and the precise path can vary with the iOS version. See Apple’s guide to switching AirPods between Apple devices.

2. Check the iPhone, Bluetooth and charging
- Update iOS: Install the latest iOS version available for your iPhone.
- Check charging: Put both AirPods in the case and confirm that both are charging.
- Check Bluetooth: Make sure Bluetooth is turned on in iPhone settings.
- Select the AirPods as the audio output: Take them out of the case, open Control Center, tap the audio or AirPlay device control, and select your AirPods.
- Test playback: Play audio and check the iPhone’s volume.

3. Restart the AirPods, then pair them again if needed
Restart
For AirPods or AirPods Pro, put both earbuds in the charging case and close the lid for at least 10 seconds. Open the case and test the connection again.
Forget and reconnect
If restarting does not help, forget the AirPods in the iPhone’s Bluetooth settings and pair them again. In Settings, tap Bluetooth, tap the information button beside your AirPods, then tap Forget This Device and confirm. To pair again, follow the on-screen instructions for your model. Apple’s pairing guidance calls for closing the case lid for 15 seconds before beginning the pairing process.

4. Reset only if the simpler steps fail
A factory reset is a further step, not the first one to try. Reset controls vary by model, so check Apple’s instructions for your specific AirPods before proceeding.

AirPods 1, 2 or 3; AirPods Pro 1 or 2
- Put the AirPods in the case, close the lid and wait 30 seconds.
- Open the lid. If the AirPods are still listed in iPhone Bluetooth settings, forget the device.
- With the case open, press and hold its setup button for about 15 seconds, until the status light flashes amber and then white.
- Follow the pairing instructions to connect them to your iPhone again.
AirPods 4 or AirPods Pro 3
Apple’s current reset guide uses three sets of double taps on the front of the case. Follow the exact sequence and light cues in the guide for your model; these cases do not use the older setup-button procedure.
AirPods Max
Press and hold the Digital Crown and the listening-mode button until the status light changes from flashing amber to flashing white. Then pair the headphones with the iPhone again.

5. Let AirPods firmware update automatically
Apple delivers AirPods firmware updates automatically; there is no manual update button. For AirPods or AirPods Pro, meet these conditions and leave them undisturbed for at least 30 minutes:
- Update the iPhone or other paired Apple device, turn on Bluetooth and connect that device to Wi-Fi.
- Connect the charging case to power using a cable compatible with the case.
- Place the AirPods in the case, close the lid and keep the case within Bluetooth range of the connected Apple device.
For AirPods Max, connect the headphones to power by cable and keep them within Bluetooth range of the paired Apple device while waiting. Afterward, open the case or reconnect the headphones and check the firmware version in the AirPods settings. Apple’s AirPods firmware update instructions explain the conditions by model. A cable supplies power for this procedure; Apple’s guidance does not say that buying or changing a cable fixes repeated disconnections.
6. Contact Apple Support if disconnections continue
If the problem persists after the appropriate restart, re-pairing, reset and firmware steps, contact Apple Support for model-specific help. The steps above cannot determine whether a particular iPhone or pair of AirPods has a hardware fault, and continuing connection trouble by itself does not establish that replacement is necessary.
