When a Steam game is removed from sale, new buyers can no longer purchase it through that Store listing. Delisting alone is different from removing a game someone already owns: Valve’s guidance treats revoked activation keys and refunded gifts as distinct reasons access may be lost. If you own the game or its DLC, check your Library and account before assuming either is gone. Continued access is not a guarantee that downloads, compatibility, DRM checks, or online services will last indefinitely.
What delisting changes—and what it does not
A removed Store listing means the game is no longer being offered to new buyers there. Store availability and an existing account entitlement are separate questions. Valve’s guidance describes specific cases in which access can be removed, such as a publisher revoking an activation key or a gift being refunded after fraud or a payment dispute; ordinary delisting is not identified as one of those causes. For Valve’s explanation of product removal, see Steamworks: Removing a product from Steam.

That distinction does not guarantee that every part of a game will remain usable forever. A game may depend on publisher-hosted servers, or face DRM, compatibility, or download limitations. Valve’s product-removal guidance specifically tells publishers to explain what players should expect when hosted servers will no longer be available.

Can you still play a delisted game?
If the game remains in your account and works on your system, delisting by itself does not establish that you have lost the entitlement. Whether you can actually play can also depend on the game’s DRM, operating-system compatibility, required services, and server status. Steam’s general guidance cannot settle those title-specific details.

For a game that relies on publisher-hosted servers, an existing Library entry does not mean those servers will continue to operate. Offline play may also depend on how the game was designed and whether it requires an online check.
How to check a game and its DLC in your Library
- Confirm the account. Sign in to the Steam account used to buy or redeem the game.
- Find the game. Check the Library and make sure filters have not hidden it; if necessary, check the Hidden Games list.
- Inspect owned DLC. Open the game’s Library page and look for its DLC section, or right-click the game, choose Properties, then select DLC. Steam Support says this view shows DLC registered to the account and whether it is installed.
- Check the purchase record if something is missing. Review purchase history. If a completed purchase is not appearing, Steam Support recommends signing out and back in.
Valve’s Steamworks documentation says, “Once owned, downloadable content is treated as an integral part of the game.” Steam can install owned DLC with the game, and the documented Properties > DLC controls can be used to manage or manually install it. See Steamworks: Downloadable Content (DLC) and Steam Support: Managing DLC in Steam.

Can you buy DLC after the base game is delisted?
There is no universal post-delisting rule established by Steam’s general guidance. Whether unowned DLC can still be purchased depends on the specific game and listing. Check the game’s Store page, search for the add-on, and review the account’s purchase history; do not assume that a DLC listing remains purchasable simply because the add-on exists.
When access can be removed for reasons other than delisting
A missing game deserves an account and purchase check before a conclusion about delisting. Steam says publishers can revoke activation keys, for example when a key was time-limited or obtained fraudulently. A gift can also be removed if it is refunded following fraud or a payment dispute. These are different from a game simply leaving the Store. Steam Support’s missing games and content guidance covers common checks.

Does delisting automatically qualify you for a refund?
No general automatic refund entitlement for every delisting is stated in Steam’s guidance. Steam’s standard policy, last updated April 23, 2024, generally allows a game refund on request within 14 days of purchase when playtime is under two hours. DLC has separate conditions: the request must be within 14 days, the underlying game must have been played for less than two hours since the DLC purchase, and the DLC must not have been consumed, modified, or transferred. Store-page exceptions may apply, and the policy notes that consumers in some jurisdictions may have additional rights for faulty games. Check the current Steam Refunds policy for the purchase and jurisdiction in question.
Valve’s product-removal documentation says it may offer refunds when a developer cancels or retires a game. That possibility is not the same as an automatic refund for every game that is removed from sale.
