Turn off the model-training or model-improvement control separately in every AI service you use. The setting usually affects future conversations; it does not necessarily delete saved chats, stop safety or service processing, or remove information already used to train a model. The instructions below reflect the providers’ consumer guidance checked on October 7, 2026.

These controls apply to the named consumer services, not automatically to every product from the same company. For work or school accounts, APIs, and AI features built into other products, check the account’s own terms and controls.

Menu names can change, and the Copilot instructions above are for Microsoft’s updated app. If a menu does not match, look in the signed-in account’s privacy or data controls for “training,” “model improvement,” or a similarly named setting. Alexa has separate voice-assistant privacy controls; it is not covered by the table’s settings.
What opting out does—and does not—mean
A training opt-out is not a general “do not process my data” switch. Providers may still process conversations to deliver the service, protect users and systems, respond to feedback, meet legal obligations, or improve features other than the models covered by the control. Storage, chat history, memory, personalization, voice recordings, and model training are distinct issues; check each control that matters to you.

- Online video installation instruction: Easiest Installation - removing dust and aligning it properly before actual installation,enjoy your screen as if it wasn't there.
- It generally looks forward. A switch that excludes future conversations does not necessarily withdraw content already used in training or reverse training that has begun.
- History may remain. Turning off training does not itself delete saved conversations in services where those conversations remain in history.
- Feedback can be treated differently. Some providers say a rating or other feedback can make the associated conversation available for model improvement despite the ordinary opt-out.
- Review and retention exceptions vary. Safety, security, and human-review processes may apply under separate rules and time periods.
- Account scope matters. Personal accounts, managed workspaces, APIs, and features accessed through another product can have different defaults or controls.
Do not enter confidential material on the assumption that a setting guarantees no human review or prevents all retention. An opt-out is useful, but it is not a confidentiality agreement.
Provider-specific exceptions to check
ChatGPT and Codex
OpenAI says either the ChatGPT Data controls switch or the Privacy Portal request is sufficient for ChatGPT conversations and Codex tasks. Turning off the consumer training control does not delete or hide saved chats. Temporary Chat is a separate mode: OpenAI says it is not used to improve models and does not appear in chat history, but it may be retained for up to 30 days for safety purposes. If you submit thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback, OpenAI says the associated conversation may be used for training even after opting out. Codex’s Include environments control is distinct from the ordinary ChatGPT setting.

OpenAI says ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, and API inputs and outputs are not used to improve models by default. API organization owners can enable data sharing under OpenAI’s separate controls, so consumer-account steps should not be treated as workspace administration instructions.

Claude
Anthropic’s consumer guidance says the setting affects new chats and coding sessions, not data already included in training that has started or models already trained. Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude even when Model Improvement is enabled. Anthropic also says conversations flagged by safety classifiers may be used to improve internal trust-and-safety systems; when you provide feedback, the related full conversation may be retained for up to five years. Commercial Claude products have separate terms.

Gemini Apps
Google says Keep Activity is on by default for Gemini Apps users aged 18 or older. With it off, chats may still be associated with the account for up to 72 hours so Google can provide the service, process feedback, and protect Google, users, and the public. Google says some chats are reviewed by trained human reviewers; chats reviewed this way and related data may be retained for up to three years and are not removed by deleting activity. Temporary chats also have stated short-term retention.
Google documents separate controls for improving audio and Gemini Live video or screen sharing. Do not assume the text-chat setting governs those recordings or other Google services.

Microsoft Copilot
Microsoft’s updated Copilot app guidance became available on August 18, 2026; Microsoft notes that older instructions apply to the older app. The training controls cover future conversation activity used to train the specified AI models. They do not exclude activity from other general product or system improvements, advertising, digital safety, security, or compliance uses. Microsoft treats training and personalization separately: training can be off while personalization remains on. Work or school accounts and Microsoft 365 Copilot use different guidance.

SpaceXAI says Private Chat is another no-training option where available; its FAQ says those conversations are deleted from SpaceXAI systems within 30 days, subject to stated exceptions. Voluntary feedback may still be used for training. In some regions outside the EU and UK, unauthenticated access may not offer an opt-out. If you use Grok through X rather than the standalone Grok service, X’s separate controls and terms may apply.

Alexa is a separate case
Amazon’s Alexa device FAQ says Alexa interactions may help improve Alexa and train machine-learning models, and directs users to Alexa privacy controls in the Alexa app or Alexa privacy settings. The available guidance does not establish the effect of every Alexa setting across all device and account types, and these controls do not govern other AI services.

A practical way to reduce training use
- List the services and account types you use. Include separate consumer, work, school, API, and standalone app accounts, as well as voice or other product features.
- Change the training control for each service. Use the applicable path in the table, then check for separate settings covering voice, environment context, or other kinds of input.
- Review related controls separately. If you also want to remove saved conversations or limit personalization, history, or activity retention, find the controls for those purposes; the training switch may not do it.
- Check feedback and review terms before sharing sensitive content. A rating, a safety review, or a separate feature’s settings may receive different treatment from ordinary conversations.
- Recheck after product changes. These controls and labels can change, and settings may differ by account, app version, and region.
