Choose Add Account to set one up, switch off Mail to pause it, or select Sign Out or Delete Account to remove it from the phone. Removing an account from iPhone does not close the mailbox with its email provider.
Add an email account to iPhone
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps, then Mail.
- Tap Mail Accounts, then Add Account.
- Enter your email address, tap Next, and follow the sign-in and setup prompts.
For many common email services, iPhone can configure the account after you choose the provider and sign in. If your provider is not listed or automatic setup cannot find the settings, tap Add Other Account > Mail Account. Enter your name, email address, password, and a description. If asked, choose IMAP or POP and enter the incoming and outgoing mail server details supplied by your email provider. Turn off an account without removing it
To pause mail on the phone while keeping the account set up, open Settings > Apps > Mail > Mail Accounts, select the account, and turn off Mail. For an iCloud email account, turn off Use on this iPhone instead. Turn the setting back on whenever you want to resume using the account in Mail.

This changes whether the account’s mail is used on this iPhone; it does not delete the account. If you only want fewer alerts at particular times, a Focus filter is a separate option and does not require turning off the account.

Remove an email account from iPhone
- Open Settings > Apps > Mail > Mail Accounts.
- Select the account you want to remove.
- Tap Sign Out or Delete Account, then confirm if prompted.
This removes the account from Mail and from other apps on the iPhone that use it. It does not cancel or permanently close the email account with its provider. To close the mailbox itself, use the provider’s account-closure process. Apple notes that an account removed from iPhone can be added again later. Some accounts use Push to deliver new messages; accounts that do not support Push can check for mail on a Fetch schedule. To review the setting, go to Settings > Apps > Mail > Mail Accounts > Fetch New Data. Apple says Automatically is the default and fetches when iPhone is charging and connected to Wi-Fi. You can select a timed schedule to fetch more often outside those conditions.
