Then check whether the pause appears in OBS’s preview, whether OBS reports dropped frames, or whether only viewers experience buffering. Those symptoms point to different causes; no single setting fixes every setup.
1. Identify which kind of media source you use
In OBS, open the source’s properties and determine whether it is a Media Source playing a local file or a VLC Video Source playing a playlist. Their playback controls differ, so change the settings for the source that actually pauses before adjusting stream settings.

Media Source: one local video
Use this for a local video file you want to loop. OBS’s Media Sources documentation, dated January 11, 2022, describes the relevant controls and notes that some behavior can vary by OBS release. (OBS Project: Media Sources)
VLC Video Source: a playlist
Use this for a playlist handled by VLC. Its visibility behavior is separate from the local Media Source controls. VLC must be installed, and OBS states that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. (OBS Project: Media Sources)

2. Check the playback settings that change on scene switches
For a local Media Source
- In OBS, right-click the Media Source and choose Properties.
- Make sure Loop is enabled if the file should repeat.
- Review Restart playback when source becomes active. OBS documents that this restarts the file when the source is in the current scene and visible; the setting defaults to on. If you do not want the clip to restart each time it becomes active, turn it off and test the scene switch.
- If a gap coincides with a scene change, test with Close file when inactive turned off. When enabled, OBS unloads the file while the source is inactive to free memory. OBS warns that when the source is shown again there may be a short period with no video while it reloads. Keeping it loaded may use more memory.
- Apply the settings and switch between the affected scenes while watching OBS’s preview.
For a VLC Video Source playlist
- Open the VLC Video Source’s properties and inspect Visibility Behaviour.
- OBS documents the default as stopping playback when the source is not visible and restarting when it becomes visible. If scene visibility changes are interrupting the playlist, adjust this behavior to match whether you want playback to stop or continue while hidden.
- Switch scenes and check whether the playlist pauses, restarts, or continues as intended.
3. Locate where the buffering begins
Watch the OBS preview and the dropped-frame counter while reproducing the scene change. A pause in the preview and a report from viewers are not interchangeable symptoms: a local media or rendering hitch can affect the preview, while a stream can reach YouTube without OBS reporting dropped frames and still buffer for viewers.

4. If OBS’s preview stutters, reduce rendering load
If the preview itself freezes or stutters, investigate OBS rendering performance rather than assuming the network is at fault. OBS recommends reducing resource-heavy sources and scene complexity. In particular, review browser sources, filters, and other demanding elements; OBS also recommends using Media Source or VLC Source for video and audio files.
- Temporarily hide or remove demanding sources and filters, then reproduce the scene switch to see whether preview playback improves.
- Reduce unnecessary scene complexity and browser-source load.
- Keep video playback in Media Source or VLC Source rather than using a less suitable method for media files.
These checks help isolate rendering load; they do not establish that it is the cause unless the preview changes with the test. (OBS Project: Encoding Performance Troubleshooting)

5. If viewers buffer, check the connection and stream delivery
When dropped frames rise
Dropped frames or disconnections call for a connection-focused check. Confirm that your upload capacity is stable for the configured bitrate, look for interruptions in the connection, and consider whether security or other software is interfering with OBS’s connection to the ingest server. When viewers buffer without dropped frames
Do not treat a clean OBS dropped-frame counter as proof that viewer playback is healthy. Check the bitrate and the platform’s recommendations, and distinguish viewer playback problems from pauses caused by a source becoming active or reloading in OBS. 6. Treat keyframes as a separate playback-quality check
YouTube transcodes streams, and OBS says consistent keyframe intervals can help viewers move smoothly between available quality options. This guidance concerns playback quality transitions; it does not show that changing keyframes will repair a pause caused by a source restart or file reload. Check keyframe settings only as part of diagnosing viewer playback, not as a substitute for fixing source visibility or activation behavior. (OBS Project: Streaming Services)
