OBS Studio is the best free starting point if you can leave a computer and internet connection running. It is free, open-source software for Windows, Mac, and Linux, and lets you combine audio with a still image or looped visual for a YouTube live stream. It is not a way to keep streaming after you turn the computer off: for that, consider cloud playout, which may have a limited free allowance rather than free 24/7 operation.

For the specific goal of free software on a computer you can keep running, choose OBS. If you need a prepared playlist to continue while your computer is off, compare cloud services by their actual free hours and continuous-use pricing, not just by whether a free tier exists.

Set up a prepared birdsong loop in OBS
This workflow is for a recording you already have. OBS can also capture live audio, but recording a prepared loop and capturing birds outside are different setups: live capture requires an audio source that can pick up the birds, while a prepared file does not require a microphone.

Download it from the OBS Project for Windows, Mac, or Linux, then open it. Use the Auto-Configuration Wizard to set basic streaming settings; OBS recommends it as a starting point. - Create a scene. In the Scenes panel, add a scene for the stream. Add an audio source for your birdsong recording and add a still image or looped visual. Arrange the visual to fill the canvas and check the audio mixer while the recording plays. OBS’s audio/video mixing and scene controls let you combine these elements.
- Check the sound and picture before going live. Confirm that the mixer shows audio activity, that the sound is audible through OBS monitoring or a test stream, and that the image or visual loop is present. If you use a prerecorded file, make sure the source is configured to repeat rather than end after one play.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube’s live-stream controls, create or select a stream and copy its stream key. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the key using the available connection method. Treat the key like a password; do not publish it or share it.
- Start with a stable connection. Let the wizard choose initial settings, then test the stream and watch OBS’s status indicators, especially dropped frames. - Keep the local setup awake and recoverable. Prevent the computer from sleeping, keep OBS open, and account for power and network interruptions. A local OBS stream depends on this setup remaining operational; a shutdown, lost connection, or application failure can interrupt it.
Use recordings and visuals you have permission to stream
A natural-sounding birdsong recording is not automatically free to use. The recording may belong to the person who made it or to a rights holder who licensed it for limited uses. Confirm that your permission covers continuous YouTube livestreaming, the video’s visuals, and any replay or archive you intend to keep.

YouTube says, “Music and sound effects from the YouTube Audio Library are copyright-safe.” That assurance applies to material in the YouTube Audio Library, not to recordings found on other channels or in other libraries. YouTube says only Audio Library music and effects are known to it as copyright-safe, and some Audio Library items require Creative Commons attribution in the video description. Do not assume that a recording labeled “royalty-free” elsewhere is cleared for an ongoing livestream or its replay. Check the specific license terms and include any required attribution.

What “free 24/7” means in practice
OBS itself is free, but a nonstop local stream still uses your computer, power, and internet connection continuously. You remain responsible for keeping the system running and responding to interruptions. OBS’s dropped-frames guidance is useful when diagnosing a stream that falters because the connection is unstable or cannot sustain the bitrate.

Common problems and what to check
- Dropped frames or an unstable stream: Check the connection for instability and whether it can sustain the selected bitrate. Use the OBS Auto-Configuration Wizard as a basic-settings starting point, then test again at a sustainable setting.
- The stream stops when you leave: A local OBS stream needs the computer and connection to keep operating. Check sleep settings, power, internet, and whether OBS is still running; use cloud playout if you need the computer off.
- The audio ends instead of repeating: Check the audio source’s repeat or loop behavior in OBS and verify it with a test before relying on it.
- There is no sound in the stream: Confirm the correct audio source is active and that the OBS mixer shows signal while the recording plays. Test the outbound stream rather than relying only on local playback.
- A visual is missing or blank: Check that the image or looped visual is in the active scene and fits the canvas. Preview the scene before starting the broadcast.
- YouTube does not accept the stream: Confirm the correct stream key is entered in OBS’s Settings > Stream and that the YouTube account meets YouTube’s current live-streaming requirements.
