If an API accepts a JWT after checking its signature and claims but never checks current session or revocation state, a still-valid token may continue to work until it expires. That is an architectural choice, not a rule that applies to every JWT-based system.
Why a password reset may not end existing access
A password is a credential used to authenticate a person. A JWT access token is a separate credential already held by a client and presented to an API. Changing the password does not, by itself, change the contents of that token or tell every service that accepts it to reject it.

JWTs are often validated using information carried in the token and configured trust, without a lookup for current session state. OWASP recommends that REST APIs validate relevant properties such as the token’s issuer, audience, and expiry. If a service performs only such stateless validation, an otherwise valid token can remain usable after a password reset. The JWT standard defines claims such as expiration, but expiry is not a password-reset notification: RFC 7519; OWASP REST Security Cheat Sheet.
Whether a reset signs users out therefore depends on the application and identity provider: which tokens they revoke, whether resource servers check that revocation, and how quickly changes reach those servers. A refresh token and an access token must be treated separately. Revoking a refresh token can stop future access-token issuance without necessarily rejecting an access token that has already been issued.

What happens to each token
| Credential | What it does | Effect of a password change |
|---|---|---|
| Password | Authenticates a user when credentials are submitted. | The credential changes. This does not itself notify every API that has accepted a token. |
| Refresh token | Lets a client request new access tokens under the authorization server’s policy. | An authorization server may revoke it on password change or logout. RFC 9700 says authorization servers MAY do this; confirm the provider’s behavior rather than assuming it. |
| Access token | Is presented to a resource server to access a protected API. | A still-unexpired JWT may remain acceptable unless the resource server learns it has been revoked or applies another current-state check. |
RFC 9700, the IETF’s January 2025 OAuth security best-current-practice document, says authorization servers may automatically revoke refresh tokens after a password change or logout. That can prevent renewal, but it does not establish that every resource server will immediately reject all previously issued JWT access tokens. The separate revocation standard, RFC 7009, says: “Implementations MUST support the revocation of refresh tokens and SHOULD support the revocation of access tokens.” It also recognizes that revocation can take time to propagate. Whether associated access tokens are invalidated when a refresh token is revoked depends on the authorization server’s capabilities and policy.
Ways to reject a token before it expires
There is no single revocation mechanism required for every JWT deployment. Choose based on how quickly a stolen token must stop working, whether APIs can reach a shared state source, and the operational cost of checking current status.

Use short-lived access tokens
Short expiry limits the period during which an exposed access token can be reused. It is a time limit, not immediate revocation: a token remains usable until expiry unless another check rejects it. OWASP recommends short expiration as one mitigation for token reuse in its JSON Web Token Cheat Sheet.

For explicit session termination, an application can record a token’s unique, server-issued jti identifier, commonly associated with its issuer, in a denylist. Each relevant resource server checks that list while validating requests and rejects listed tokens until they expire. OWASP REST guidance says: “When an explicit session termination event occurs, a unique, server-issued identifier (the jti claim, optionally combined with aud) should be submitted to a denylist on the API which will invalidate that JWT for any requests until the expiration of the token.”

- Rejection speed: The token can be rejected on a request once the relevant API sees the denylist entry.
- Shared state: Every resource server that must enforce revocation needs access to the denylist or an equivalent synchronized view.
- Trade-offs: A request-path lookup adds a dependency whose availability, latency, and consistency matter. In a distributed deployment, propagation delays can leave a window before all services see the entry.
Use the issuer-and-jti approach described by OWASP or evaluate another status mechanism for the token profile. OWASP warns against using raw JWT bytes or a hash of the token as the denylist key because alternative valid token representations can undermine that approach.
Use an OAuth token revocation endpoint
RFC 7009 defines a POST mechanism for asking an authorization server to revoke a token. Its requirements distinguish refresh-token revocation from access-token revocation, and the effect at a resource server depends on what that server and the authorization server implement. An offline JWT validator that checks only signature and claims does not automatically learn that an authorization server received a revocation request. Check the provider’s behavior, including whether revoking a refresh token also invalidates associated access tokens and how revocation status reaches APIs.

Consider a Token Status List
A Token Status List is an issuer-based option in which a token points consumers to a list and an index used to obtain its status. OWASP describes it as a scalable revocation approach, but support is implementation-specific. Verify that the issuer, token format, libraries, and resource servers in your deployment support it before relying on it.

Bind tokens to a key where practical
Sender-constrained access tokens require the client to prove possession of associated key material, for example through mutual TLS (mTLS) or Demonstrating Proof of Possession (DPoP). RFC 9700 recommends sender-constraining as a way to reduce misuse of stolen or leaked tokens. Someone who steals only the token may be unable to use it without the key; if both token and key material are compromised, that protection is weakened. Sender constraint reduces replay risk but does not define what a password reset revokes.

Restrict each token to its intended audience
RFC 9700 says access tokens should be restricted to specific resource servers, and a resource server must reject a token not intended for it. Audience restriction limits where a leaked token can be used; it does not terminate a valid token at its intended audience.
Decide what your application promises after a reset
Make the reset and logout behavior explicit in the system’s security design. Trace what happens from the password-change event through the authorization server to each API that accepts access tokens.
Quick Recap
- Identify token types. Document where access tokens and refresh tokens are issued, stored, and validated.
- Define the required outcome. Decide whether a reset must stop future token renewal, reject existing access tokens immediately, or both. Do not describe one outcome as the other.
- Choose enforcement points. If existing access tokens must be rejected before expiry, ensure every relevant resource server checks revocation or status—or use another mechanism that makes the change visible to it.
- Account for propagation. Determine how quickly revocation state reaches each service and what happens if the state source is unavailable. Do not promise instantaneous global invalidation unless the architecture can support that guarantee.
- Explain the behavior to users and operators. State whether changing a password ends active sessions, and provide an explicit way to terminate sessions if that is a separate action.
