How to Stop a Scheduled Agent from Creating Duplicate Drafts

A reliable fix for duplicate scheduled drafts protects both schedule registration and the CMS write with a stable logical key, durable state, and retry-safe handling.

To stop a scheduled agent from creating the same draft more than once, give each intended post a stable identity, record that identity durably, and make draft creation safe when the job is retried or runs concurrently. Deduplicating the schedule itself is not enough: the CMS write is a separate operation and needs its own protection.

Why a scheduled job can create duplicate drafts

A scheduler may invoke a callback again after a restart, retry, timeout, or duplicate schedule registration. If the callback creates a draft before it can establish whether an earlier attempt succeeded, a second invocation can create another draft. A timeout is especially ambiguous: the CMS may have saved the first request even though the agent never received the response. AWS warns that retries without idempotency can produce duplicate side effects and recommends using the same operation identity across retries (AWS Well-Architected guidance).

There are two distinct boundaries to protect: registering a scheduled callback and carrying out the callback’s side effect. Scheduler-level deduplication can prevent duplicate registrations under its own rules, but it does not guarantee that a CMS receives only one create request.

Give every intended post a stable identity

Compute a logical key from durable inputs that identify one intended post, such as the campaign or workflow, task type, and scheduled slot or event. Reuse that key on every retry. A fresh random UUID or a new timestamp generated for each attempt changes the key, so the system cannot recognize that the attempts represent the same operation.

Mead Spiral Notebook, 1 Subject, Graph Ruled Paper, 7-1/2" x 10-1/2", 100 Sheets, Green (05676AC5)
  • 1 subject notebook comes with 100 graph ruled, double-sided sheets with 5 squares per inch
  • Sheets measure 7-1/2" x 10-1/2" when torn out with an overall size of 8" x 10-1/2". Perforation easily tears out with clean edges.
  • Graph ruling is ideal for plotting graphs, drawing curves and more. Notebook is 3-hole punched to store in your favorite binder.
  • Covers are coated for durability and have writable label on front cover. Available in Green.
  • Assembled in U.S.A. with U.S. and foreign parts

The exact inputs depend on what your application considers one post. If two posts in a campaign are meant for different slots, include the slot identity; if a retry is for the same slot, do not let retry time change the key. AWS recommends deriving idempotency keys from stable operation inputs and propagating the key to downstream steps or services that support idempotency (AWS guidance).

Make the draft write safe under retries and concurrency

  1. Persist the intended operation. Store the logical key, the intended post or slot, the draft record identifier when available, and a lifecycle status in durable storage.
  2. Claim the key atomically. Before creating a draft, insert or claim the key using a unique constraint or conditional write. A read-then-write check without atomic arbitration can let two workers both observe “not found” and create drafts at the same time.
  3. Reuse or resume existing work. If the key already exists, inspect its status. Return the saved draft when creation succeeded; otherwise resume or reconcile the existing operation rather than starting an unrelated create.
  4. Pass the same key downstream. If the CMS or another service accepts an idempotency key, send it with the request and keep it unchanged on retries. If it does not, retain enough local state to look up and reconcile a possibly completed write before retrying.
  5. Keep the record long enough. Expire idempotency records only after the expected retry and recovery window. Removing one too early can make an old retry look like a new post.

A useful lifecycle might be planned → creating → draft_saved → scheduled/published, with explicit failure and unknown-outcome states. Treat a timeout as an unknown result, not proof that the CMS rejected the request. Query by the logical key or external post identifier before issuing another create. A worker left in creating after a crash also needs a lease, recovery rule, or reconciliation process so it cannot block the operation indefinitely.

Separate schedule deduplication from draft deduplication

Cloudflare’s Agents scheduling documentation describes different deduplication rules for its Agent scheduling methods (Cloudflare scheduling documentation):

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Cron: documented as idempotent by default for matching callback, cron expression, and payload.
  • Date-based and delayed schedules: documented as non-idempotent by default; callers can opt into deduplication using callback and payload.
  • Recurring intervals: scheduleEvery() deduplicates on callback, interval, and payload, and can be called in onStart() under those semantics.

These rules concern schedule registration. They do not establish that a CMS create operation is idempotent. The same documentation distinguishes the Agent scheduling methods from the Scheduler primitive, which is experimental. Check the installed package version and its current API details before relying on particular method behavior.

Account for draft and published states in the CMS

A draft is not necessarily the same record state as a published post. Payload CMS stores newer draft versions in a versions table while leaving the published document unchanged. Its draft documentation also notes that scheduled publish and unpublish actions rely on background jobs; those actions will not run unless the application processes the jobs. Draft visibility must be controlled through access rules: using the draft read argument alone does not prevent unauthenticated users from receiving draft documents (Payload drafts documentation).

These CMS lifecycle features do not replace the application-level key for a scheduled create. Keep creation deduplication, draft visibility, and later publishing as related but separate concerns.

What to verify in your stack

  • Does schedule registration deduplicate, and which callback, expression, interval, or payload fields define a match?
  • Does the CMS create API accept an idempotency key, and how long does it retain the result?
  • Can a database unique constraint or conditional write arbitrate simultaneous attempts?
  • Can you find a saved draft after an ambiguous timeout, using the logical key or an external post identifier?
  • Does the idempotency record outlive the full retry and recovery window?
  • Are draft and published content stored or exposed differently, and do access rules keep drafts private?
  • Are background jobs actually being processed for scheduled publishing or unpublishing?

The exact schema, API guarantees, retry window, and transaction behavior depend on the scheduler, database, CMS, and their versions. Confirm those details in the documentation for the stack you run; the sources above do not establish one universal implementation or platform winner.
