Stop using the cabinet until it is stable. Empty the cabinet, remove its glass shelves, level and square the case, attach its anti-tip restraint, and only then make small hinge adjustments. Wobbling usually comes from loose assembly or an uneven floor; a door that rubs or will not latch is often the result of the same unlevel or twisted frame, not a hinge that needs force.
What to do first: make the cabinet safe
Glass furniture can become dangerous while you are moving or tilting it. Take the following precautions before diagnosing a wobble or touching a hinge:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Remove every object, drawer and glass shelf. Wrap shelves separately and keep their edges away from hard floors.
- Use a second adult for a tall or top-heavy cabinet. Do not try to catch a falling cabinet while holding a glass door.
- Wear closed-toe shoes and protect the glass edges with padding while the doors are open.
- Do not work on a door, shelf or panel that is cracked, chipped or otherwise damaged.
- Keep children and pets away from the work area.
- Have the cabinet’s assembly and installation manual available. Screw heads, hinge patterns, levelers and weight limits differ by model.
A Brayden Studio tempered-glass cabinet manual warns: “WARNING: Serious or fatal crushing injuries can occur from furniture tip-over.” Treat the anti-tip attachment as safety equipment, not an optional finishing touch.
Identify whether the problem is the floor, frame or hinges
Open and close each door gently before making changes. Note where the door touches, whether the whole case rocks, and whether the gap around the door changes when you press lightly on a corner. This separates a cabinet-level problem from a door-adjustment problem.

| What you observe | Most likely cause | First remedy |
|---|---|---|
| The entire cabinet rocks when you push a top corner | Uneven floor, missing leveler, or loose base/leg | Inspect fasteners, then level the base with its feet or a firm shim |
| The case is stable, but a door rubs along one edge | Door-height or side-to-side hinge alignment | Verify the case is level and square, then adjust one hinge axis |
| Both doors are tight or the gaps change from top to bottom | Twisted or out-of-square frame | Re-square and tighten the cabinet before adjusting hinges |
| The door closes but the magnet misses the catch | Door reveal or depth alignment is off | Correct the door position; do not bend the glass or slam it |
| The cabinet becomes unstable after loading shelves | Top-heavy load or missing wall restraint | Unload it and install the specified anti-tip hardware |
| A screw spins without tightening or the frame is visibly bowed | Stripped mounting point or structural damage | Stop tightening and obtain model-specific parts or professional repair |
FREDEES troubleshooting guidance identifies loose fasteners, an uneven floor and improper wall mounting as common wobble causes. Those checks should precede any attempt to reposition a door.
Empty the cabinet and inspect the assembly
Remove the load before moving anything
Take out decorative objects first, then remove shelves according to the manual. If a shelf is supported by pins, lift it evenly rather than twisting one corner. Set glass on a padded, level surface where it cannot slide. Moving a loaded cabinet changes its center of gravity and can stress both the frame and the wall restraint.
Check every structural connection
With the cabinet empty, inspect the back panel, top, base, side panels, legs, cam locks and hinge mounting plates. Compare both sides: a missing screw, an open cam lock or a leg that is not seated can make the case rack diagonally.
- Push each panel joint lightly. A joint that moves independently needs tightening or reassembly.
- Check that the back panel is fully seated in its grooves and that its fasteners are present.
- Look underneath for bent feet, a loose plinth or a leveler that has backed out.
- Check hinge screws at the cabinet side and at the door. Do not remove all hinge screws at once.
- Use the driver or hex key specified by the manual. A poorly fitting bit can round the head.
Tighten only until the joint is secure. Over-tightening particleboard or a threaded insert can strip the material and leave the connection weaker than before.
Level the cabinet base
Measure in two directions
Place a spirit level across the cabinet’s front edge, then place it front-to-back on each side or on a rigid top surface. A level reading in only one direction can miss a floor slope that twists the case. Check again after every adjustment.
Use built-in feet or levelers
If the cabinet has threaded feet or base levelers, adjust them in small turns. Raise the low corner until the bubble is centered, then check the front-to-back reading. Keep as much thread engaged as the manual requires; an almost-unthreaded foot can be less stable.

Ghent’s installation guidance states: “Ensure case is level. Use levelers on base of case to adjust.” Levelers are preferable to improvised material because they remain attached to the cabinet and can be fine-tuned after loading.
Shim a cabinet that has no leveler
For a small floor-height difference, use a thin, firm furniture shim under the low corner or low section of the base. The shim must support the cabinet continuously enough that the base does not flex or rock. Do not use loose folded paper, soft cardboard or a stack of unrelated objects.
- With help, tilt the empty cabinet only as far as necessary to slide the shim into place.
- Set the cabinet down fully and test for rocking by applying gentle pressure to opposite top corners.
- Recheck the spirit level in both directions.
- Trim or replace the shim if it protrudes where it could be kicked or if the base does not sit flat.
Feet and shims are reversible corrections. They cannot repair a bent base, a broken leg or a floor that is moving under load.
Square the frame before adjusting any hinge
A level cabinet can still be out of square if its frame is twisted. Measure the door reveals—the gaps between each door and the cabinet sides, top and center. A gap that is wide at one end and narrow at the other can indicate racking.
Keep the cabinet level while you tighten the frame. Work through the assembly points identified in the manual, including cam locks and back-panel fasteners. If the manual specifies a sequence, follow it; the back panel often helps hold the case square.

Install or restore the anti-tip restraint
Once the empty cabinet is level and square, attach the supplied anti-tip strap, bracket or other restraint before replacing shelves and objects. The restraint must connect to a suitable part of the wall—such as the structure specified by the cabinet manual—and to the cabinet’s designated fixing point.
Ghent’s installation instructions call for anti-tipping hardware before loading doors and shelves. A Brayden Studio manual requires permanent wall fixing. If the original restraint is missing or damaged, choose a wall-anchor kit rated for the cabinet’s load and compatible with the wall construction. A drywall-only fastener may be unsuitable where the manual requires a stud or other structural support.
- Do not substitute a decorative cord or an un rated picture hook.
- Do not anchor through a thin back panel unless the design and instructions specify that location.
- Keep the restraint taut enough to limit forward movement without pulling the cabinet out of level.
- After anchoring, test stability by applying gentle pressure to the upper frame; never deliberately pull the cabinet toward you.
Wall drilling is a more permanent intervention than a shim. Confirm the wall type, locate the required structure and check for hidden services before drilling.

Only begin hinge adjustment after the case is stable, level, square and anchored. Many display cabinets use concealed European-style hinges with separate adjustments for height, side-to-side position and depth. IKEA customer-service guidance summarizes the principle: “You can adjust the position and level of the doors by using the screws in the hinges.” BDI instructions likewise describe minor European-hinge adjustments after the cabinet has been leveled.
Prepare for the adjustment
- Open the door enough to reach the hinge screws without leaning your weight on the glass.
- Support a heavy door with a second person if the manual calls for it.
- Identify which screw the manual assigns to each movement. Appearance varies by hinge.
- Mark the starting position with a pencil on the hinge plate so you can return to it.
Adjust height first
If the top or bottom of the door sits too high or low relative to the frame, use the hinge mounting screws or the specified height adjustment. Loosen only enough to move the door, hold it in the new position and retighten evenly. Check that the door does not contact the base or top rail.
Adjust side-to-side reveal second
Correct an uneven gap at the hinge side or center next. Turn the side-to-side adjustment in a small increment, then close the door gently to inspect the reveal. Make the same change at the other hinge only when necessary; unequal movement can twist the door.

Adjust depth last
If the door sits proud of the frame, is recessed, or misses a magnetic catch despite having an even reveal, use the in-and-out depth adjustment. Keep the movement minimal. Excessive depth adjustment can reduce the hinge’s engagement or cause the door edge to strike the neighboring panel.

- Change one axis on one hinge.
- Retighten the screw without crushing the hinge or panel.
- Close the door slowly and inspect all four edges.
- Check the latch or magnet and listen for rubbing.
- Repeat only if the result points to the same axis.
Never bend a glass door to improve a reveal. If a hinge mount moves in the panel, the screw hole is stripped, or the hinge plate is bent, stop and replace the appropriate part rather than increasing torque.
Confirm the final reveal and operation
A correctly aligned door should have a consistent-looking gap, clear the frame through its full swing and close without force. Open it several times from different positions. Check that the magnetic catch meets squarely and that the door does not rebound or need a push at the final inch.
Replace shelves and objects only after the empty cabinet passes this test. Load shelves gradually and keep heavy items low. Follow the cabinet’s own shelf-load limit; a limit stated for one model must not be generalized to another. Recheck the level and door operation after loading because weight can expose a marginal floor or loose base.

The cabinet still rocks after leveling
Remove the load and test the base again. Confirm that every foot contacts the floor or that the shim supports the low area. Reinspect the legs, plinth and back panel for a loose or bent component. If the cabinet rocks while the level is centered, the frame or base may be damaged rather than merely out of level. Do not compensate by adding multiple loose shims.
The door sticks only when another door is open
Look for interference at the center reveal and verify that both doors are mounted at the same height. Level the case again, then adjust side-to-side position in small increments. A door that moves when the neighboring door is operated can indicate a twisted frame or loose hinge plate.

The door rubs after the cabinet is moved
Moving across a threshold can shift a shim, loosen a foot or rack the case. Empty the cabinet, inspect the base and repeat the level-and-square procedure. Do not assume the hinge setting changed by itself.
The magnetic catch misses although the gap looks even
Check depth alignment and whether the catch or strike plate is loose. Tighten its fasteners if the manual permits adjustment, then make a minimal depth correction at the hinge. Forcing the door can damage the catch or glass.
A hinge screw will not tighten
Stop turning when the screw spins or the panel material begins to crumble. The mounting hole may be stripped, or the insert may have pulled out. Model-specific replacement hardware or a furniture repairer is safer than a larger screw chosen without checking the hinge and panel.
When to stop and obtain professional repair
Do not continue adjusting if any of the following is present:
- Cracked, chipped or visibly stressed glass.
- A bowed, split or permanently twisted frame.
- Stripped hinge mounts, missing inserts or a detached back panel.
- Persistent rocking after correct leveling and anti-tip attachment.
- A wall or floor that cannot safely support the cabinet and its loaded weight.
- Uncertainty about the correct replacement hinge, screw, anchor or glass specification.
Contact the cabinet maker or a qualified furniture repairer with the model number and photographs of the damaged area. Exact hinge geometry, screw sizes, wall anchors and glass limits are model-specific, so a part that appears similar may not be compatible.
Choosing the right remedy
| Remedy | Best for | Advantages | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tightening assembly fasteners | Loose joints, cam locks, legs or hinge plates | Simple and usually reversible | Over-tightening can strip particleboard or inserts |
| Built-in levelers | Small, adjustable floor differences | Fine control without loose parts | Must retain adequate thread engagement |
| Firm furniture shim | Cabinets without levelers on a slightly uneven floor | Inexpensive and reversible | Needs solid, continuous support and can shift if poorly fitted |
| Anti-tip wall restraint | Tall or top-heavy glass cabinets | Limits forward tip movement | Requires suitable wall structure and correct hardware |
| Hinge adjustment | Final height, reveal or depth alignment | Precisely positions a stable door | Cannot fix a loose, twisted or damaged frame |
| Replacement parts or repair | Stripped mounts, bent frames or damaged glass | Addresses the underlying failure | Compatibility and glass safety are model-specific |
Prevent the problem from returning
- Keep the anti-tip restraint attached whenever the cabinet is in use.
- Do not drag the cabinet while loaded; empty it and use two adults.
- After moving it, check the level, base contact and wall restraint before replacing contents.
- Keep heavy objects on lower shelves and avoid concentrated weight on one side.
- Inspect hinge and base fasteners periodically, tightening only to the manufacturer’s specification.
- Keep the floor under the cabinet dry and free of soft mats that allow a foot to settle unevenly.
- Replace damaged glass or hardware rather than operating the cabinet with a known defect.
The reliable sequence is always the same: empty and protect the glass, inspect the assembly, level the base, square the frame, anchor the cabinet, then adjust the hinges. Reversing that order can hide the real cause and turn a minor alignment issue into a safety problem.
