Reduce motion and visual clutter you do not need, then try brief movement breaks at planned points. Keep only changes that make it easier to return to the task; fidgeting helps some people in some situations, but it is not a universal focus aid.
First identify what is moving
“Movement” can mean several different things, and each calls for a different adjustment:

- Movement around you: people passing, screens changing, or activity in your line of sight.
- Your own movement: shifting, tapping, doodling, or getting up while you try to work or listen.
- A tool that moves: a fidget spinner or other object that may occupy your hands but also compete for your eyes or ears.
Also consider what the task requires. Visual motion can be especially distracting when reading or working on a screen; a tactile activity may be less intrusive during listening, but it can still draw attention away. These are useful questions for choosing what to try, not rules that work the same way for everyone.
Reduce movement and visual clutter you do not need
Start with the least disruptive changes. If you can, choose a quieter workspace or position yourself away from frequent foot traffic. Close unrelated windows or notifications, clear distracting items from your immediate view, and make the task itself clear before beginning. NHS inform includes quiet work zones, limiting distractions, and reducing unnecessary visual clutter among strategies for work and education: Managing ADHD symptoms in work and education.

For a student, CDC guidance suggests clarifying tasks, considering shorter assignments, minimizing distractions, and discussing what helps or distracts the individual. It notes that moving while learning or using a fidget tool can be beneficial or distracting depending on the child; these are options to observe, not prescriptions for every student. See CDC’s ADHD in the Classroom guidance.
At work, a personal space with fewer distractions and planned movement breaks may be worth trying, but practical options depend on the job and workplace. NHS inform does not establish one arrangement that applies to every role.

Plan movement instead of fighting it all day
When sitting still is not helping, build movement into the routine rather than letting interruptions decide when you stop. Divide a long task into manageable portions, choose a natural stopping point, and take a short break to stand, stretch, or walk before returning. In a classroom, movement can also be incorporated into a lesson or offered as a break; CDC says classroom physical activity can support concentration and staying on task, but that does not mean more movement is always better for each person. See CDC’s Classroom Physical Activity guidance.
A practical way to judge the change is to note what you tried, what you were doing, and whether you could resume the task afterward. This simple task log is a way to compare your own experience, not a proven intervention. Change one thing at a time where possible so you can tell which adjustment made a difference.

Decide whether a fidget tool is helping
Try a fidget item only if it is easy to stop, does not add distracting noise or visual motion, and leaves your attention on the task. A small, quiet tactile item may be a reasonable low-stakes experiment, but the cited sources do not establish a superior product or show that a fidget spinner treats ADHD.
The evidence on spinners is mixed and limited to particular classroom settings. A 2021 multiple-baseline study reported improved on-task behavior during spinner use for three second-grade students with ADHD, a very small sample that cannot establish how well the approach generalizes: “Using Fidget Spinners to Improve On-Task Classroom Behavior for Students With ADHD”. A 2018 classroom evaluation involving 60 preschool children diagnosed with ADHD reported poorer attention associated with spinner use: “To Fidget or Not to Fidget, That Is the Question”. Differences in age, study design, and classroom context mean neither result settles whether all fidget tools help or hinder in other situations.

CDC says information about which classroom accommodations work is limited and recommends observing and talking with the student about what helps or distracts them. A tool that draws your eyes away, disrupts other people, or makes it harder to restart is not earning its place; put it away and try a less stimulating adjustment.
Make adjustments collaboratively in a classroom
For a student, include the student in deciding what to try and, where relevant, coordinate with the teacher and family. A clear task, a less distracting spot, shorter work portions, a planned break, or time to move can be considered alongside a fidget tool. CDC emphasizes individual observation rather than assuming a single accommodation will suit every child.

Some people with ADHD describe strategies such as doodling, moving their legs, walking while talking, or exercising. CHADD presents these as practical reports, not as evidence that every strategy improves attention for every person: CHADD’s Fidget-to-Focus Strategies. The useful test is whether the particular movement helps the person stay engaged without derailing the activity or others.
Quick Recap
A quick way to choose what to try
- Name the source: Is the distraction in the room, in your own movement, or in a tool?
- Match the adjustment to the task: Reduce visual motion for visually demanding work; keep any hand activity quiet and unobtrusive during listening.
- Schedule a reset: Break up a long task and plan a brief movement break at a stopping point.
- Check the result: Keep an adjustment only if attention returns to the task and it does not create a problem for others.
