But the free personal service is not a mobile phone plan, and it does not support 911. If you rely on it as your only phone service, you could lose access during an internet, power, or Google Voice outage.
What using Google Voice as your main number means
Google Voice gives you a number people can call or text. You can use it in the Google Voice app or at voice.google.com. Google documents voicemail transcription, call screening, spam protection, and call blocking. You can also link up to six phone numbers so calls to your Voice number ring on those phones. That makes Voice a possible primary contact number: the number you share with people for routine communication. It does not, by itself, replace the cellular service that lets a phone connect to a mobile network. Google says, “Google Voice doesn’t offer mobile service plans.” Google Voice Help: Port your Google Voice number

No. Personal Google Voice can handle calls over the internet, and calls can be forwarded to linked numbers, but the basic service is not a carrier plan. If you want calls to your Voice number to ring on a mobile phone, you need a phone plan and must link that phone’s number. Google Voice Help: Link your number

Can you call 911 with Google Voice?
Do not assume that you can. Google’s plan comparison says emergency calling is available only with specified paid standalone or Workspace-managed Voice accounts—not basic personal Voice. The exact availability depends on the account and plan. Google Voice plans and features

Check with your carrier about what porting means for your account and any remaining plan obligations.

- It may work well if you want one number for routine calls, texts, and voicemail, prefer app or browser access, and can forward calls to another phone.
- It may not be enough on its own if you need a cellular plan, dependable emergency access independent of internet service, or phone service that remains available during power, internet, or Google Voice outages.
Before making Voice your main number, decide whether you mean your main public contact number or your only phone service. For the latter, verify the emergency-calling support of your exact plan and keep a separate phone service available for emergencies.
