How to Choose a Low-Cost U.S. Phone Plan for a Reliable Personal Number

Start with the places you need your number to work—not the lowest advertised price. Check service at home, work, along your commute, and wherever you travel regularly; then compare the full cost, data limits, phone compatibility, and number-transfer terms. No carrier or low-cost plan is reliable everywhere: indoor reception and congestion can vary by location.

Check coverage where you actually use your phone

Use the FCC National Broadband Map as an initial screen for reported mobile broadband coverage. The FCC says its map reflects expected connectivity outdoors or in a moving vehicle, not indoor coverage. A coverage indication therefore cannot promise that calls will work in your home, office, or another building.

Check your home, workplace, commute, and regular travel areas. If possible, try the network in those places before depending on it for an important personal number. The FCC also accepts mobile broadband coverage challenges based on speed tests, but tests must use mobile data rather than Wi-Fi and be conducted outdoors or in a vehicle. These tests concern broadband coverage; they do not guarantee that a voice call will succeed inside a particular building.

Do not assume a plan performs exactly like the network whose coverage it uses. Connect by T-Mobile says its service may be slower than T-Mobile during congestion. Local performance and provider priority rules vary, and the published information for the plans below does not establish a measured reliability ranking.

Compare the real cost, data, and renewal terms

Compare what you will pay over the period you expect to keep the plan, not just a monthly equivalent in an advertisement. Include the initial payment, taxes and fees, renewal price after any introductory period, and the data available at that price. Also check whether data stops, slows, or costs extra when you reach the allowance.

Plan example Published price and payment terms Data and limit behavior What to check
Connect by T-Mobile $15 plus tax for 5GB, $25 plus tax for 8GB, or $35 plus tax for 12GB. Each plan runs for 30 days and may be renewed. The provider says no new phone purchase or credit check is required. Unlimited talk and text. On-network data ends when the allowance is used until the next billing date, unless you add data or change plans. Whether the allowance fits your usage and whether losing on-network data at the limit works for you. Connect says service may be slower than T-Mobile during congestion.
Visible The official page lists a $25 monthly base plan and higher-tier plans. The researched page described an offer for selected higher tiers for eligible new customers who port a number, use the required code, and meet service conditions; that particular offer was stated to end October 29, 2026. Plan-specific allowances and limit behavior are not stated here. Check the live offer, eligibility, required code, port-in deadline, continued-service conditions, and current plan terms before signing up. Promotions can change.
Mint Mobile Offers a three-month introductory price. The displayed introductory 5GB offer requires $45 upfront for three months, equivalent to $15 per month during that period. Listed 12-month renewal equivalents are $15/month for 6GB, $20/month for 17GB, $25/month for 23GB, and $30/month for Unlimited; taxes and fees are extra. The cited plan information does not state what happens to data at the limit. Compare the upfront three-month payment with the renewal term you would accept; the introductory price applies only to the first three months. Verify current names, prices, and terms.

These are published plan terms, not independent tests of call quality or network performance. Prices, plan names, and promotions can change; check the provider’s current terms before enrolling. Connect’s cited prices are for 30-day service periods. Mint’s 12-month figures are monthly equivalents tied to 12-month renewals, not a promise that you can pay month to month at that rate.

Make sure your phone can join the plan

An unlocked phone may work with another provider, but unlocked status alone does not confirm compatibility. Check that the handset supports the provider’s network and the SIM or eSIM activation method you intend to use. Connect and Mint both offer bring-your-own-device service subject to their compatibility requirements.

  • Confirm the phone is unlocked; the FCC’s phone-unlocking guidance notes that an unlocked phone may work with another provider, but compatibility still matters.
  • Use the provider’s compatibility check before buying service or a replacement handset.
  • Confirm whether your phone can activate with the physical SIM or eSIM option you plan to use.

Keep your number when switching

The FCC says: “If you switch service providers and remain in the same geographic area, you can keep your existing phone number.” This process is called number porting and can apply between wireline, IP, and wireless providers.

  1. During signup, ask the new provider to transfer—or port—your existing number.
  2. Have the account information requested by the new provider ready, and follow its current transfer instructions.
  3. Do not cancel service with your current provider until the transfer is complete, unless the new provider’s instructions say otherwise.

The FCC establishes the general portability principle; it does not specify the steps or timing for each carrier. Follow the receiving provider’s instructions for your account.

Use a simple decision rule

  • Put coverage first: If a plan cannot serve the places where you need calls and texts, a low price does not make it suitable.
  • Match the data behavior to your habits: If you need data throughout the billing period, a plan that stops on-network data at its cap may be a poor fit unless you are willing to add data or change plans.
  • Check the full commitment: Compare upfront payment, taxes and fees, renewal terms, and promotional conditions across the period you expect to stay.
  • Protect the number: Verify compatibility and complete the port through the incoming provider before ending the old service.
