How to Start VTubing: A Beginner’s Guide to Avatars, Tracking, and Streaming

You can start VTubing with a computer, an avatar, a tracking camera, a microphone and OBS. The first decision is the avatar format: a Live2D model works with VTube Studio, while a VRM or VRoid model needs a 3D-compatible tracker. A webcam is the simplest tracking option, but a compatible smartphone can replace it. OBS then combines the tracked avatar, game or display, text, alerts and audio into the broadcast.

This guide takes you from choosing a model to making a private test stream, including licensing, privacy, computer requirements and the fixes for the most common first-session problems.

What a VTubing setup actually does

VTubing is a pipeline rather than one application. Your camera observes your face (and, with suitable software, other movement). Tracking software converts that input into parameters such as eye direction, blinking, mouth shape and head rotation. The software applies those parameters to your avatar. OBS Studio is the broadcast layer: it places the avatar beside a game or screen capture, adds text and other sources, mixes audio, and sends the finished scene to your streaming service.

Keeping those jobs separate makes troubleshooting easier. If the model does not move, investigate the avatar format, tracker or camera. If movement works but the stream is missing the avatar or audio, investigate OBS sources and mixer settings. A microphone is an audio device, not a requirement for ordinary face tracking; it becomes mandatory only when you use audio-based lip sync in VTube Studio.

Choose between a 2D and 3D avatar first

Your model format determines which tracking application you can use. Decide this before downloading software or buying equipment.

2D Live2D models

A Live2D model is made from illustrated artwork divided into parts and rigged so those parts deform and move. It is the format VTube Studio is designed to display. DenchiSoft’s listing is explicit: “VTube Studio ONLY supports Live2D Cubism models, other formats like VRoid are not supported” (VTube Studio Steam listing).

Choose 2D when the illustrated look is central to your identity and you are prepared to obtain both the art and its rigging. A custom model can involve two separate deliverables—artwork and a rig—so confirm exactly what a commission includes. A simple, limited-expression model is a valid first version; you can replace it later without changing your OBS scenes.

3D VRM and VRoid models

A 3D model is an avatar in a VRM-compatible format. VRoid Studio is one route to creating one, and exported VRM data must be opened in a tracker that supports VRM. Do not try to import a VRoid file into VTube Studio; it will not load there.

3D is useful when you want a complete body, camera movement or poses that are represented by a 3D rig. The visual result and the amount of expression you obtain depend on the model’s rig and the tracker’s capabilities, so check compatibility before committing to a download or commission.

2D versus 3D at a glance

Decision point 2D Live2D 3D VRM/VRoid
Model style Illustrated artwork separated into rigged parts; deformation creates expressions and head movement. Three-dimensional mesh, materials and a skeleton; supports a full 3D presentation when the tracker can read the format.
Creation effort Requires suitable art plus Live2D rigging. Commission scope should state both. Can be created in VRoid Studio or obtained as a VRM asset; customization and rig quality vary by asset.
Tracking-software compatibility VTube Studio supports Live2D Cubism models. Requires a VRM-compatible tracking application; VTube Studio does not support VRM or VRoid.
Expression and body motion Face parameters drive the rigged artwork; the range is set by the rig. Face and body movement can be represented by the 3D rig when the selected tracker and model support it.
Licensing Check the artist’s model, texture, rig and streaming permissions. Check the VRM creator’s terms and every included mesh, texture and preset before commercial use.

Obtain an avatar and verify its license

There are four sensible starting routes:

  • Create a VRoid model yourself and export it as VRM.
  • Use an asset whose terms clearly allow streaming and any commercial activity you intend to pursue.
  • Commission artwork and rigging for a Live2D model, or commission a 3D model and compatible rig.
  • Start with a deliberately simple placeholder while you learn tracking and OBS.

Save the license or terms with the model files. “Free download” does not automatically mean “free for every use.” Look for clauses covering livestreaming, monetization, modification, redistribution, attribution and use by collaborators.

VRoid Studio’s guidelines say that eligible provided meshes, textures and presets may be sold or used commercially when no special clause applies, and that exported model data can be used for live streaming or for-profit appearances (VRoid Studio Guidelines). That permission does not override a restriction attached to a third-party item you added, so inspect each asset’s terms. Keep a note of the model version and the required credit so you can satisfy the license in your profile or stream description.

Pick your tracking method: webcam or smartphone

Webcam tracking

VTube Studio supports webcam tracking on Windows and Mac. A USB webcam is the most universal purchase path: connect it to the computer, grant the tracking application camera permission, select it, and position it so your face is visible. It avoids a second device and is straightforward to replace or upgrade.

Camera quality is only one factor. A stable mount, even front lighting and a clear view of your face often matter more than a high headline resolution. Keep the lens near eye level and avoid a bright window behind you; these are setup choices, not guarantees of a particular tracking quality.

Smartphone tracking

VTube Studio also offers smartphone-camera tracking through its mobile app. This can be the better first choice if you already own a compatible phone and do not want to buy a webcam. Follow the app’s current connection instructions, keep the phone securely mounted, and keep it charged during a long session.

VTube Studio’s FAQ explains that phone tracking sends calculated tracking parameters to the PC rather than raw face video (VTube Studio FAQ). That reduces what is transmitted to the computer, but it is not a reason to ignore privacy: review camera-preview behavior, app permissions, connection settings and what is visible in your room before broadcasting. A phone’s network or connection path can also add setup complexity, so test it under the same conditions you will use live.

Webcam versus phone

Factor USB webcam Smartphone camera
Existing hardware Requires a webcam unless your computer has a usable built-in camera. Uses a compatible phone you already own.
Setup complexity Connect, select the camera and grant permission in the desktop tracker. Install the mobile component, pair it with the desktop tracker and mount the phone securely.
Latency Usually follows the direct camera-to-computer path; actual delay depends on the camera and computer. Depends on the phone, connection method and network conditions; measure it in your own test.
Privacy The camera feed is handled on the tracking computer; check which preview windows OBS captures. The FAQ says calculated parameters, not raw face video, are sent to the PC; still review permissions and previews.
Cost Can be no additional cost if you have a suitable built-in camera; otherwise buy a USB webcam. No additional camera purchase if you already have a compatible phone, but you may need a mount or charging arrangement.

Install the tracker and load the model

For a Live2D model in VTube Studio

  1. Install VTube Studio from its official Steam listing: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1325860/VTube_Studio/en.
  2. Copy or import your Live2D model using the application’s model-management interface. Keep the model folder intact; missing texture or rig files can make an otherwise valid model appear incomplete.
  3. Choose webcam tracking on Windows or Mac, or pair the VTube Studio mobile app if you are using a phone.
  4. Grant camera permission, select the intended camera, and complete the application’s calibration or tracking setup while facing the lens naturally.
  5. Move your head, blink and speak to confirm that the avatar reacts before opening OBS. This isolates tracker problems from broadcast problems.

VTube Studio’s support boundary is important: a VRM or VRoid file is not a faulty Live2D model; it is simply the wrong format for this application.

For a VRM or VRoid model

  1. Export the model as VRM only after checking the creator’s terms and any included asset restrictions.
  2. Choose a tracking application that explicitly imports VRM and supports your camera or phone. Confirm its operating-system and model-version requirements on the developer’s documentation.
  3. Import the VRM, select the tracking source, and test face and body movement in that application.
  4. Keep the tracker visible in a window that OBS can capture, or use the tracker’s supported capture output.

There is no universal “VRoid setting” inside VTube Studio. The tracker is selected by the model format, not by whether the avatar was made by a particular editor.

Add voice and lip sync

Use a microphone for your voice. A basic USB microphone is a separate purchase from a webcam or phone and can be added later if you are initially testing silently. Place it close enough for a clear signal without blocking your face, and monitor the input meter for clipping or a constantly active noise floor.

VTube Studio’s audio-based lip sync requires a microphone. Ordinary face tracking does not: the camera can drive mouth and face parameters without audio. If the avatar moves but its mouth does not respond to speech, check that the correct microphone is selected and that audio-based lip sync is enabled. In OBS, add the same microphone as an audio input source only once; adding duplicate sources can make an echo.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build the broadcast in OBS

Download OBS from the project’s official site (OBS Project). OBS is the compositor between your tracker and the stream. A scene is a saved arrangement of sources; you can create separate scenes for a starting screen, gameplay, chatting and an ending screen.

Create a first scene

  1. Open OBS and run the Auto-Configuration Wizard. Let it test your system and network, then review its proposed output settings rather than assuming a preset will suit every computer.
  2. Create a new scene in the Scenes panel and name it clearly, such as “Gameplay.”
  3. Add the avatar. Use the source type that matches your tracker: a window capture of the tracker, a supported game or display capture, or another output documented by that tracker.
  4. Add the game or application with Game Capture, Window Capture or Display Capture as appropriate. OBS documents these source types in its Sources Guide.
  5. Add a microphone as an audio input source and confirm that its meter moves when you speak. Add desktop audio only if you want the game or system sound in the stream.
  6. Add text, images or alert elements only after the core avatar, video and audio work. In the Sources list, arrange layers so the avatar is not hidden behind an opaque capture.
  7. Resize and position each source in the preview. Leave a safe area for chat or captions if your chosen layout needs one, but do not cover the avatar’s face.
  8. Save the scene and duplicate it for other layouts. Duplicating a working scene is safer than rebuilding every source during a live broadcast.

OBS’s Quick Start Guide describes the same basic workflow—configure, add sources, check audio, then start streaming or recording. Use Studio Mode when you need to prepare a scene change without showing the edit to viewers.

Choose output settings deliberately

Resolution, frame rate, encoder choice, scene complexity and network conditions all affect performance. A visually ambitious scene can overload a computer even when the tracker itself is smooth. Start with the Auto-Configuration Wizard’s recommendation, record a short sample, and inspect the result for dropped frames, stutter, unreadable text and audio/video sync before increasing quality.

Computer requirements and what the numbers mean

There is no single specification that guarantees a smooth VTubing stream because the tracker, avatar complexity, game, OBS scene and encoder compete for resources. The published minimums are useful boundaries, not performance promises.

Software Published baseline How to interpret it
VTube Studio on Windows At least 4 GB of RAM and 2 GB of dedicated VRAM in the Steam listing. This is a software minimum. A demanding model, game and OBS scene can require more.
OBS on Windows A DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU is listed in OBS’s system requirements (OBS System Requirements, published 2021). Compatibility with the minimum does not establish a particular resolution, frame rate or encoder performance.
Camera VTube Studio supports webcam tracking on Windows and Mac; phone tracking uses its mobile app. Choose the device you can mount, power and test reliably.
Audio A microphone is needed for voice and for VTube Studio’s audio-based lip sync. It is independent of face tracking, so you can add or upgrade it separately.

Before buying parts, run your intended game, tracker and OBS scene together. Watch CPU, GPU and memory use, then make one change at a time. If the avatar is smooth but the game capture stutters, the bottleneck is different from a camera that loses tracking; treating both as a “VTuber problem” wastes time.

Run a private test before your debut

OBS recommends a short test: “We strongly encourage running a test for a few minutes to make sure that there are no issues” (OBS Quick Start Guide). Make that test private or record locally.

  1. Open the exact avatar, tracker, game and scene collection you plan to use.
  2. Record or stream privately for several minutes while speaking, turning your head, changing scenes and making the loudest sound you expect to make.
  3. Review the recording with headphones. Check mouth movement, camera framing, microphone level, desktop-audio balance, scene transitions and whether any private window or notification appeared.
  4. Check OBS’s status indicators for dropped frames or encoding warnings. If performance is poor, simplify the scene or reduce output settings before adding decorative sources.
  5. Repeat after every major change: a new model, tracker, game, capture device or OBS update can alter resource use.

Troubleshoot the first common failures

The model will not load

Identify the file format first. A VRM or VRoid model cannot load in VTube Studio, which supports Live2D Cubism models only. Use a VRM-compatible tracker for that file, or obtain a Live2D model for VTube Studio. If the format is correct, restore the complete model folder and re-import it rather than moving individual texture files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The avatar is visible but does not move

Confirm that the tracker has camera permission, the intended camera is selected and the preview actually sees your face. Remove competing camera applications, improve front lighting and repeat calibration. With a phone, verify that the mobile app is paired and that the phone remains mounted and powered.

The mouth does not follow speech

Check the microphone selection and input meter. Audio-based lip sync needs a microphone; ordinary face tracking does not. If the face moves but the mouth still does not, inspect the model’s available mouth parameters and the tracker’s lip-sync setting.

OBS shows the game but not the avatar

Return to Sources and confirm that the tracker window or supported output was added. Check source visibility and layer order, then resize the source in the preview. A tracker can be functioning perfectly while OBS captures a different window.

The stream stutters or frames drop

Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard again, close unnecessary applications, record a simpler scene and reduce output resolution or frame rate if needed. Test the game, tracker and OBS together; minimum hardware figures do not guarantee smooth performance under a heavy workload.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A private window appears on stream

Review every capture source and its preview before going live. Prefer a specific window or game capture when appropriate, hide notifications, and use the private-test recording to catch accidental desktop, camera-preview or document exposure.

A practical first-stream plan

For the lowest-complexity start, use one model format, one tracking method, one microphone and one OBS scene. A beginner who already owns a computer and a compatible phone or webcam can avoid a camera purchase, create or obtain a free or low-cost avatar route, and learn the complete workflow before commissioning custom art or buying upgrades. Expand only after the basic path is reliable: add scenes, alerts, a capture card or a more elaborate model one change at a time.

Keep these records with your setup: the model’s license and required credit, the tracker and model versions, the camera and microphone selected in each application, and the OBS scene collection that passed your private test. That small amount of documentation makes recovery much faster when a device changes or an update resets a setting.
