How to Start Playing The One Ring 2e RPG: What to Buy and Read First

Buy the The One Ring Starter Set if your group wants the fastest route to a first session. It combines streamlined rules, a Shire setting guide, an adventures book, eight ready-made characters, maps, cards and the custom dice needed at the table. Choose The One Ring Core Rules (Second Edition) instead when the Loremaster wants complete character creation, the full rules reference and a campaign toolkit that will last beyond introductory adventures.

This guide explains exactly what each purchase does, what to read first, how Second Edition’s setting and content fit together, and when (or whether) to add supplements.

Starter Set or Core Rulebook? The short answer

The two products serve different jobs rather than competing as two versions of the same box. The Starter Set is an on-ramp: it teaches the game through a limited rules volume, a Shire-focused setting, prepared characters and adventures. The Core Rules are the complete Second Edition reference for building your own characters and running a continuing campaign in Eriador.

Question Best first purchase Why
Can we play with the least preparation? The One Ring Starter Set Ready-made characters, introductory rules, adventures, maps, cards and custom dice are in one box.
Does the Loremaster want full character creation and campaign options? The One Ring Core Rules (Second Edition) It is the authoritative complete rulebook for a longer campaign.
Do we want a Shire-centered introduction? The Starter Set Its setting material and scenarios concentrate on the Shire.
Do we plan to travel widely through Eriador? The Core Rules Free League describes Second Edition’s broader focus as Eriador, the lands west of the Misty Mountains.

If nobody in the group has run the game before, start with the Starter Set. If one person already knows the system or is committed to a campaign, start with the Core Rules and treat introductory adventures as optional teaching material.

What comes in The One Ring Starter Set

Free League Publishing describes the box as a first step into Middle-earth. Its physical contents cover the minimum a new table needs:

  • 24-page Rules volume: the streamlined rules used to teach the game.
  • 52-page Shire volume: setting information for the introductory region.
  • 31-page Adventures volume: scenario material designed to get play moving.
  • Eight pregenerated character sheets: players can choose a character instead of completing character creation before the first session.
  • Two large maps: one of the Shire and one of Eriador.
  • Thirty Wargear Cards: table references for equipment.
  • Six Journey Role and Combat Stance Cards: reminders for the game’s travel and combat choices.
  • Two D12 Feat Dice and six D6 Success Dice: the custom dice set supplied for play.

That combination matters because it removes several common delays. You do not need to write characters, assemble a separate map, find a scenario or source the game’s custom dice before trying a first adventure. The box is especially efficient for a group that wants to discover the tone and procedures before committing to a larger campaign.

Who benefits most from the Starter Set

  • Groups with no previous experience of The One Ring rules.
  • Players who want to choose from prepared heroes and begin roleplaying immediately.
  • A Loremaster who prefers a bounded Shire setting while learning travel, councils and combat procedures.
  • Tables that want physical aids supplied in the same purchase.

What the Starter Set does not replace

The Starter Set is not presented as the complete Second Edition reference. When the group wants all character options, advancement and campaign procedures, the Core Rules become the long-term book. You can continue using the Starter Set’s maps, cards and dice as table aids where they apply, but expect to consult the Core Rules for the full system.

What The One Ring Core Rules (Second Edition) adds

The Core Rules are the better first buy when the Loremaster is planning a campaign rather than a single introduction. Free League’s current listing identifies this as Second Edition and places its main geographic emphasis on Eriador, the lone-lands west of the Misty Mountains.

Complete character and campaign reference

Use the Core Rules when players want to create their own heroes, compare the available options and make advancement decisions over multiple sessions. It is also the practical reference for a Loremaster preparing original adventures or moving beyond the Starter Set’s introductory material.

A wider geographic frame

The Starter Set gives the group a concentrated Shire entry point. The Core Rules provide the broader Eriador frame, so a campaign can move beyond the Shire without treating the introductory region as the whole game.

When the Core Rules are worth buying first

  • The Loremaster already has a campaign premise and needs the complete rules before session one.
  • Your players strongly prefer creating characters instead of selecting pregenerated sheets.
  • You expect the campaign to continue after the Starter Set’s adventures.
  • You want one authoritative book rather than learning from a condensed rules volume and upgrading later.

What to buy and read first: two reliable routes

Choose one of these routes based on your group’s priority. Both lead to the same game; they differ in how much preparation happens before the first session.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Route A: the fastest playable start

  1. Open the Starter Set’s Rules volume. Read the complete 24-page rules book once so you know the vocabulary and sequence of play.
  2. Skim the Shire volume next. Focus on the places, people and background that appear in the first adventure. Do not try to memorize every setting detail.
  3. Read the Adventures volume before inviting players to choose characters. Note the opening situation, expected scenes and any information the Loremaster must keep secret.
  4. Lay out the eight character sheets. Let players choose from the pregenerated options and explain only the information needed to make that choice.
  5. Sort the table aids. Put the Wargear Cards, Journey Role and Combat Stance Cards, maps, two D12 Feat Dice and six D6 Success Dice where everyone can reach them.
  6. Run the introductory scenario. Keep the Rules volume open for procedures rather than pausing to read the entire Core Rules.

This route is the clearest answer to “what to buy and read first” for a completely new group: one box supplies the teaching text and play materials in the order you need them.

Route B: the complete campaign start

  1. Read the Core Rules introduction. Establish the game’s premise and the role of the Loremaster before selecting a campaign direction.
  2. Learn the core resolution rules. These are the procedures you will use repeatedly, so understand them before diving into setting chapters.
  3. Read character creation. If you are running a published adventure, prepare the available choices before the character session; for a home campaign, decide which part of Eriador your opening will use.
  4. Study travel, councils and combat. These are the procedures most likely to shape an early adventure and should be available as quick references during play.
  5. Read only the setting material your first scenario needs. Keep the rest of the Eriador chapters as reference instead of delaying play until you have read the entire book.
  6. Prepare the opening adventure and character sheets. The exact order depends on whether you are adapting a published scenario or creating your own.

After the first session, return to the Core Rules for the full advancement and campaign procedures. This staged reading prevents a large rulebook from becoming a barrier while still giving the Loremaster a complete reference.

Where the Starter Set fits in Second Edition’s timeline

The Starter Set places its adventures between Bilbo’s journey and the events of The Lord of the Rings. Its Shire focus supports a local, character-driven beginning, with examples including Drogo Baggins, Rory Brandybuck and Esmeralda Took.

The Core Rules widen the lens to Eriador. That means the products are compatible in premise but intentionally different in scope: the Starter Set teaches through one region, while the Core Rules support journeys across the broader western lands.

Second Edition was announced by Cubicle 7 on May 17, 2019 as an updated and streamlined rules iteration. The announcement described 11 Cultures and six Callings and said previously released material would remain usable with minor adjustments. Treat that announcement as historical edition guidance; Free League’s current catalog is the buying authority for products presently sold in the Second Edition line.

Preparing your first session

Decide who is the Loremaster

Choose one person to read the adventure in advance, control non-player characters and apply procedures. For the Starter Set, that person can work almost entirely from the Rules and Adventures volumes. For a Core Rules campaign, the Loremaster should also decide which Eriador location and campaign premise will frame character creation.

Set expectations about character choice

Starter Set players select from eight pregenerated characters. This is a feature, not a restriction for the introductory session: it lets the table learn the game before making long-term build decisions. If your group wants custom heroes immediately, use the Core Rules route and schedule enough time to read character creation before play.

Organize the physical components

Keep the two D12 Feat Dice and six D6 Success Dice together so nobody substitutes ordinary dice by mistake. Place the six Journey Role and Combat Stance Cards beside the maps, and separate the 30 Wargear Cards so equipment references do not get mixed into character sheets.

Choose a manageable opening

Use the Starter Set’s first adventure if the group is learning. A home campaign should begin with a situation that lets players practice the game’s core resolution, travel, councils and combat procedures without requiring knowledge of every corner of Eriador.

Explain only what players need

Before the opening scene, tell players the premise, what their characters know and how to read the supplied sheet. Introduce setting details as they become relevant. This keeps the first session focused on decisions rather than a lecture about Middle-earth.

Do you need supplements?

No. Neither the Starter Set nor the Core Rules requires an additional supplement to begin. The official catalog shows a continuing line of compatible products, but release order and regional availability vary and are not established here.

When an additional book makes sense

  • After the first sessions reveal a region your group wants to explore in greater depth.
  • When the Loremaster identifies a specific campaign style that needs more support.
  • When players have exhausted the introductory scenarios and want new adventures.

Buy supplements based on a demonstrated need rather than assembling the entire line before anyone has played. The Starter Set’s maps, cards and dice remain useful table aids after you add the Core Rules.

Common buying and preparation mistakes

Buying only the Core Rules for a group that wants instant play

The Core Rules give you the complete system, but they do not serve the same ready-to-play function as the Starter Set’s pregenerated characters and introductory adventure package. If preparation time is the deciding factor, choose the Starter Set or plan extra work for character creation and scenario preparation.

Assuming the Starter Set is the entire Second Edition line

Its rules volume is intentionally streamlined and its setting is Shire-centered. Move to the Core Rules when you need full character options, advancement and campaign procedures.

Reading every setting chapter before session one

Read the material your opening adventure uses, then keep the rest as reference. The Core Rules route is more efficient when the Loremaster learns the procedures first and expands the setting as the campaign travels.

Ignoring the edition label

Check that a listing identifies the Second Edition product you intend to buy. Cubicle 7’s 2019 announcement discussed compatibility with minor adjustments, but the current Free League catalog should determine which edition and product line you are purchasing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming price or stock is universal

Regional listings, prices, ASINs and live inventory were not established for this guide. Before ordering, verify the exact regional edition, seller description, price and stock, especially when a marketplace lists multiple versions under similar names.

What each player should know before session one

  • Whether the group is using pregenerated characters or creating new ones.
  • Which part of Middle-earth the opening uses: the Starter Set’s Shire or a Core Rules campaign in Eriador.
  • That the table will use the supplied D12 Feat Dice and D6 Success Dice.
  • That Journey Role and Combat Stance Cards are shared references, not private character accessories.
  • How to ask the Loremaster for a rules clarification without stopping the scene for a full rulebook search.

After the first adventure

Ask the group what they want more of before buying anything else. If everyone enjoyed the Shire but wants deeper character development and a continuing campaign, add the Core Rules. If the group already owns the Core Rules, revisit character options, advancement and campaign procedures before planning the next journey.

Keep a short list of rules questions that arose during play. Resolve those questions from the Core Rules between sessions rather than interrupting the next adventure repeatedly. This produces a smoother learning curve and gives the Loremaster a focused reading plan.

Bottom line: fastest start versus complete campaign toolkit

The Starter Set is the best first purchase for most brand-new groups because it puts a playable introduction, Shire setting, eight characters, adventures, maps, cards and custom dice in one box. The Core Rules are the right first purchase for a Loremaster who already knows the table will become a longer campaign and wants the complete Second Edition system from the beginning. Start with the product that matches your preparation tolerance and campaign ambition; add the other only when your group reaches the boundary of what the first book supplies.
