To start creating content on YouTube, sign in with a Google Account, create a channel, choose a video idea for a specific audience, and publish using the phone or other equipment you already have. You can begin with a regular video or a Short; neither format guarantees growth. Make each video clear and original, then use YouTube Analytics to learn what viewers respond to.
1. Choose a viewer and a useful or entertaining idea
Start by writing down who you want to reach and what one video could help that person understand, do, or enjoy. A focused premise makes it easier to decide what belongs in the video and what a viewer should expect from its title and thumbnail.

There is no reliable secret code for discovery. YouTube says its systems use signals that can include what viewers watch or skip, watch time, likes and dislikes, “not interested” feedback, and satisfaction surveys. 2. Create your YouTube channel
- Sign in to YouTube with a Google Account.
- Choose the option to create an account or channel, then select whether it is for personal or business use.
- Follow the on-screen setup. Your channel is the place from which you can upload videos, create Shorts and playlists, and comment.

3. Choose your first format: Short or regular video
Choose the format that fits the idea and the viewing experience you want. A quick, self-contained moment may suit a Short; a lesson or story that needs more room may work better as a regular video. YouTube’s guidance does not establish that one format reliably grows a channel faster.

For Shorts, give the opening seconds a clear reason to keep watching. YouTube Help says that, since March 31, 2025, Shorts views count starts and replays without a minimum watch time. “Engaged views” remains available in Analytics to compare viewers who chose to continue watching; the Help page says YPP eligibility and Shorts ad revenue sharing are based on engaged Shorts views. 4. Make the video with equipment you already own
A smartphone is enough to begin making Shorts. YouTube’s April 8, 2025 Shorts guide calls a smartphone the primary tool and describes a tripod for stability and a ring light for lighting as optional—not required—upgrades. YouTube’s Shorts setup guide
- Before recording, decide on the one main point or moment the video should deliver.
- Choose a place where your subject is visible and the sound is understandable.
- Record a short test and check the picture and audio before making the full video.
- If a phone is all you have, begin with it; buy accessories only if a specific problem, such as shaky footage or poor lighting, makes them worthwhile.
The cited YouTube guidance does not name or test equipment brands, prices, cameras, or microphones, so there is no need to treat a particular purchase as a prerequisite.

5. Upload, package, and publish your first video
- Open the right creation flow. For a regular video, use YouTube’s Create flow and upload the video. For a Short, record in the mobile app or upload a vertical video using the Shorts workflow.
- Write an accurate title and description. Tell viewers what the video actually covers; do not promise a result or reveal content that is not in the video.
- Choose a representative thumbnail. It should help viewers understand what they will see, not mislead them.
- Review the video before publishing. Check that the picture, sound, and intended audience experience are clear.
- Publish, then review performance. Use YouTube Analytics to understand how existing uploads are performing and to inform future ideas.
YouTube advises that titles, descriptions, and thumbnails accurately represent the video. Analytics can help you learn from audience response, but no source establishes a guaranteed posting schedule or growth formula. 6. Keep content original and understand monetization rules
If you hope to monetize later, make videos for viewers’ enjoyment or education, not solely to collect views. YouTube’s monetization policies say content should be original and authentic rather than mass-produced, generic, repetitive, or manipulative. On July 15, 2025, YouTube renamed “repetitious content” as “inauthentic content” to clarify that repetitive or mass-produced material is included. YouTube said this clarified an existing rule and did not change its reused-content policy. A recurring format is not automatically prohibited: similar videos may be allowed when each has materially varied substance and offers creative, educational, or other value.

Shorts Feed watch hours do not count toward the 4,000-hour long-form threshold. These are eligibility thresholds, not an earnings estimate or a guarantee that YouTube will accept an application. Other listed requirements include policy compliance, YPP availability in your country or region, no active Community Guidelines strikes, 2-Step Verification, access to advanced features, and an active AdSense for YouTube account. Eligible channels apply in YouTube Studio and undergo review. Check YouTube’s current YPP overview and eligibility page because requirements can change.

- You are unsure what to post: Return to the viewer you want to help or entertain and develop one distinct idea. Make the video’s actual value clear in its packaging.
- You think you need a full studio: Start with your phone. Consider optional stabilization or lighting only when it solves a real recording problem.
- Views are not increasing as expected: Do not assume a particular niche, schedule, or format guarantees growth. Review Analytics and use what you learn to shape later ideas.
- You are making repeated videos from a template: A recurring structure alone is not the whole test. Make each video’s substance meaningfully different and valuable; avoid mass-produced or minimally varied uploads.
- You have reached a YPP threshold: Confirm every other eligibility requirement and apply through YouTube Studio. Reaching the numbers alone does not guarantee acceptance.
