You can start VTubing with a computer, a microphone, an avatar format that matches your tracking software, and streaming software such as OBS. First choose whether you want a 2D Live2D avatar or a 3D VRM avatar; then choose compatible tracking, connect your audio and content, confirm your streaming account is eligible, and rehearse the complete setup before going live. You do not need a custom or expensive model to begin.
1. Choose the kind of VTuber stream you want to make
Decide what you plan to stream—gaming, chatting, art, music, or another format—before selecting an avatar. The content and the amount of on-screen motion you want will help determine the model format and tracking setup.

- 2D Live2D: A layered illustrated model animated by tracking software. VTube Studio is one option, but it supports Live2D Cubism models, not VRoid or VRM models. VTube Studio’s requirements documentation explains its supported model and tracking setup.
- 3D VRM: If you want to use a VRoid or another VRM model, choose tracking software that supports that format. VTube Studio’s documentation points to VSeeFace as an alternative for VRoid/VRM models; do not expect to load a VRM model directly into VTube Studio.
- Start with what you have: You can begin without commissioning a custom avatar or buying a new camera. Choose a compatible model and software first, then consider upgrades after you have tried making content.
2. Match the tracking software to your model
For Live2D: VTube Studio
VTube Studio is available on mobile and desktop and works with streaming software including OBS and Streamlabs. It can track through a webcam or a compatible phone. Its documentation recommends a webcam resolution of 1280×720 or higher for good eye and blink tracking, and says 15–30 FPS is sufficient. These are the vendor’s recommendations, not a guarantee that every camera or room will produce the same tracking quality. DenchiSoft also describes tracking quality as iOS above webcam above Android; treat that as the developer’s assessment rather than an independent comparison.
Check device compatibility before relying on a phone: the documentation lists Face ID iPhones and iPads and certain A12-or-newer devices as supported iOS examples. It says recent Android devices should generally work, while older ones may not. Requirements and supported-device lists can change, so consult the current VTube Studio requirements before buying or setting up a device. A compatible phone is optional if you use webcam tracking.

For VRM or VRoid: choose a VRM-compatible tracker
Confirm that the tracking application accepts your exact model format before you create or acquire the avatar. VTube Studio is not the right model loader for VRM. The available guidance identifies VSeeFace as an alternative for VRoid/VRM, but does not establish a comprehensive comparison of 3D tracking applications or identify one as best.
3. Get an avatar you can use
Choose an avatar that works with your tracking software. It could be a model you create, one you commission, or one you already have permission to use. For a Live2D workflow, the model must be compatible with Live2D Cubism and VTube Studio; for a VRM workflow, verify VRM support in the chosen tracker.

Before using a model publicly, check its license and the creator’s terms, including whether streaming, monetization, editing, and attribution are allowed. Do not assume that a model found online is free to use commercially. You can begin with a simple compatible model and upgrade later.

Check the full workload, not just the tracker
Install the avatar tracker and a broadcasting application such as OBS. VTube Studio’s Steam listing provides minimum and recommended requirements for that app, but those specifications do not guarantee smooth gameplay, avatar tracking, and video encoding at the same time. OBS likewise cautions that meeting compatible-system requirements does not guarantee effective streaming or recording. Test the actual game or other content, avatar, overlays, and output together before planning a debut.

Use a microphone you can speak into clearly and connect it as an audio source in your broadcast software. A webcam is useful if you choose webcam tracking, but it is not mandatory when you have a compatible phone. Lighting and a dedicated microphone can be useful additions, not prerequisites for starting.
Build and inspect the scene
- In your broadcasting software, create a scene for the stream and add the content source you need, such as a game capture or display capture.
- Add the avatar using the capture method supported by your tracker and broadcasting software. VTube Studio says it works with OBS, Streamlabs, and other streaming software.
- Add your microphone as an audio input and check that speaking moves the audio meter without clipping or overwhelming game audio.
- Position and size the avatar and any overlays. Inspect the preview to make sure the avatar is visible and that application controls or unrelated windows are not captured.
- Switch between scenes and sources as you intend to during the stream, checking that the avatar, microphone, and content remain present.
5. Confirm your channel can go live
YouTube
YouTube Help says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. The same help page states that streamers must be at least 16. Its encoder-streaming guidance covers use cases such as gameplay, overlays, microphones, and cameras. Account status and platform requirements can change, so check YouTube’s current live-streaming guidance and resolve any eligibility prompts before scheduling a stream.

Run a private or unlisted test where the platform allows it. A full rehearsal is more useful than checking the avatar application alone, because the stream depends on the model, tracking, audio, scenes, encoder, and connection working together.
- Confirm the model tracks your face and responds as expected when you turn, blink, or speak.
- Listen to a recording or test stream for microphone clarity, unwanted noise, and a sensible balance with game or desktop audio.
- Check that game capture or other content appears correctly and does not expose private notifications, account details, or controls.
- Change scenes and verify that sources do not disappear or appear in the wrong order.
- Watch for dropped frames, freezes, or audio interruptions during the same kind of activity you plan to stream.
Common first-stream problems
- The model will not load: Check the model format. VTube Studio requires a Live2D Cubism model and does not support VRM/VRoid models; use software compatible with your model.
- Eye or blink tracking is unreliable: If using a webcam with VTube Studio, check that the camera can provide at least 1280×720 and that it is running in the recommended 15–30 FPS range. Improve the camera’s view of your face and verify the selected input device.
- The avatar works in its app but is missing from the stream: Check that the correct window or supported capture source is included in the active scene, then inspect the broadcast preview rather than only the tracker window.
- Your voice is absent or too quiet: Confirm the intended microphone is selected in the broadcasting software, that its audio meter moves while you speak, and that it is not muted in the scene or operating system.
- The stream struggles when a game is running: App minimum requirements do not establish that the whole streaming workload will run smoothly. Test the game, tracker, overlays, and encoder together; reduce unnecessary workload or adjust the scene before going live.
- You cannot start a YouTube stream: Check channel verification, any live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days, and the age requirement stated by YouTube Help. Follow the account’s current eligibility messages.
