If Stream Labels will not launch, sign in, create text files, or refresh labels, first identify which version you use: Streamlabs Desktop has built-in Stream Labels, while the separate Stream Labels app generates files for OBS and other streaming software. The fix depends on that distinction. This guide follows Streamlabs’ troubleshooting guidance, including its stated update interval of about 60 seconds. Streamlabs’ troubleshooting guide was last updated April 25, 2025; its setup guide was last updated January 28, 2026.
First, identify which Stream Labels workflow you use
“Stream Labels” can mean either built-in sources in Streamlabs Desktop or the separate Stream Labels desktop app. The built-in route does not require an external app. The standalone app writes label values to text files, which you then add as file-backed text sources in OBS or another streaming program.

| Workflow | Where labels come from | What must be present or running |
|---|---|---|
| Streamlabs Desktop built-in labels | Stream Label widget sources in Streamlabs Desktop | An Alert Box widget source must be present; Streamlabs says it may be hidden. |
| Standalone Stream Labels app with OBS or other software | Generated text files in the output folder you selected | The standalone app must remain running for real-time file updates. |
If you are unsure, look at how you added the label: a Stream Label widget source indicates the built-in workflow; a text source reading a file indicates the standalone workflow.

Fix Stream Labels in Streamlabs Desktop
- In Streamlabs Desktop, remove the sources for the labels that are not updating.
- Go to Sources > + > Widgets > Stream Label.
- Choose the label you want from the drop-down menu and add it again.
- Confirm that an Alert Box widget source is present in the scene. It can be hidden if you do not want it visible.
- Wait about 60 seconds for the label to refresh before deciding whether the change failed.
If the recreated sources still do not update, log out of Streamlabs Desktop, close and restart the app, then sign in again. If needed, try launching Streamlabs Desktop as an administrator. These are Streamlabs’ recommended next steps for built-in labels that remain stuck.

Reset the standalone Stream Labels app and its text sources
Use this reset when the separate app will not launch, does not create or update files, or its files no longer match your OBS text sources. It removes the existing generated files and app settings, so note your current output location and label-source setup first if you need to recreate them.
- In OBS or your other streaming software, remove the text sources previously created for the affected labels.
- Delete the Stream Labels output folder that contains the generated text files.
- Delete the app data folder at
%appdata%Roamingstreamlabels. - Download and install the latest Stream Labels app from the Streamlabs Dashboard.
- Launch the app, sign in, and choose an output directory. Streamlabs’ setup guide gives a folder under Documents as one possible location.
- Recreate the text sources in your streaming software and point each one to the correct file in the newly selected output directory.
- Keep the standalone Stream Labels app running while you rely on its files to update.
In OBS, add a text source, enable Read from file, and select the appropriate label file from the output directory. A source pointed at an old folder or the wrong label file may show stale or blank text even when the app is running.

If the login window never appears
Streamlabs says a blocked popup can prevent the standalone app’s login window from appearing. Check whether your antivirus or other security software blocked Stream Labels, and allow the app or add an appropriate exception if needed. Do not disable protection wholesale as a routine troubleshooting step.

Understand the update interval and avoid common traps
- Wait for a refresh: Streamlabs says generated text files update about once every 60 seconds. Allow that interval after changing a source, token, or setting.
- Keep the standalone app open: it must be running on the computer to update its files in real time; OBS alone does not refresh those generated values.
- Do not edit generated files directly: Stream Labels can overwrite manual edits to its output files.
- Check token capitalization: tokens are case sensitive. Save the settings and wait for the next refresh before checking the result.
- Check file paths: OBS text sources must read the files in the output directory currently selected in Stream Labels.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Likely check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in label in Streamlabs Desktop is stale | Source configuration, Alert Box widget, or desktop app session | Recreate the Stream Label source, confirm an Alert Box source exists, then log out and restart the app if it remains stuck. |
| Standalone app login window does not appear | Blocked popup or security-software interference | Check antivirus/security history and allow the app where appropriate, then try signing in again. |
| Standalone app opens but files are missing | Selected output directory or a security block | Confirm the app’s output folder and check whether security software blocked file creation. |
| OBS text is blank or old | Wrong file path, wrong label file, or app not running | Enable Read from file, select the correct file in the current output folder, and keep Stream Labels running. |
| Recent token or setting change has not appeared | Case sensitivity, unsaved settings, or refresh timing | Check capitalization, save the setting, and allow about 60 seconds for the next update. |
Or let it run in the cloud
Stream Labels fixes help with on-screen counters and text overlays; they do not keep a YouTube stream running. If your separate goal is to loop uploaded videos as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, StreamNeo runs that stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
