Startup controls differ by machine; the examples below show why you should not assume one mower’s sequence applies to another. This is general guidance for walk-behind rotary mowers, not riding mowers or zero-turns.
Before you start: prepare yourself and the lawn
- Read the exact mower’s manual. Check its startup and shutdown sequence, required battery, fuel and oil preparation, and safety controls. The 2017 Husqvarna 7021P manual, for example, says that model was shipped without oil or gasoline. That does not establish what another model requires.
- Wear protective clothing. Use sturdy footwear and eye protection; the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS) also recommends hearing protection. Keep guards and safety devices in place.
- Clear the area. Remove rocks, sticks, wire, toys, and other objects that could be thrown by the blade. Keep children, pets, and bystanders away from the operating area.
- Check conditions and footing. Avoid mowing wet grass. For a walk-behind rotary mower, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) advises mowing across slopes rather than up and down.
These precautions are consistent with the CPSC walk-behind mower fact sheet, its rotary mower safety guidance, and CCOHS rotary mower guidance.

Identify your mower before following a startup sequence
Battery-powered walk-behind mower
Use the sequence in the manual for your model. One example is the battery mower procedure on Husqvarna’s U.S. support page: open the battery lid, insert a charged battery, turn the safety key to 1, stay behind the product, loosen the start inhibitor, then push the motor-brake handle toward the handlebar. Husqvarna also warns not to start while standing on uncut grass in the lowest position. These are instructions for that product family, not a universal sequence for battery mowers.

Check the manual for fuel, oil, and controls such as a choke, primer, or fuel valve; their presence and use vary by model. In the Husqvarna 7021P manual, the operator-presence bar must be held against the handle to start the engine, and the starter handle is used to start it. The manual warns that the blade turns when the engine runs. Do not assume another gasoline mower has the same controls or setup.
#1 Best Overall
- Auto Choke Engine - 5.8 ft.lb torque 144cc 4-stroke OHV engine with no primer, no choke starting.
- Cutting Height - 8-position single lever four-wheel synchronized height adjustment from 0.7" to 3.2".
- Mowing Convenience - 7" rear/6“ front double ball-bearing wheels achieve smooth movement, comfortable foam-wrapped angled grip eliminates grasp fatigue.
- Durable Cutting Deck: 20" cutting deck and specialized blade delivering a clean, even cut. Enjoy years of high efficient mowing with superior cutting quality
- Note - Do not dump or turn the mower over to avoid oil entering the combustion chamber.
Start gasoline mowers outdoors. Refuel only with the engine off and cool: CPSC states, “Never refuel the mower while it is running or hot.” CCOHS likewise advises fueling when the mower is cool.
Starting and mowing safely
- Position the mower on a suitable starting surface as directed by its manual. Stand behind the machine, keep hands and feet clear of the deck and discharge area, and make sure people and pets are well away.
- Use only the startup steps for your mower. Engage the specified safety control and operate the starter exactly as instructed. If the machine does not start, stop and consult its manual rather than reaching into the deck or improvising with controls.
- Keep a firm grip and stay behind the mower while mowing. Guide it at a controlled pace, watch the ground ahead, and keep hands and feet away from the cutting area. On slopes, mow across rather than up and down; do not mow wet grass.
- Stop before leaving the operating position or dealing with a blockage. Release the control or use the shutdown procedure specified in the manual. Wait until the blade has completely stopped before approaching the cutting area or clearing a chute. Never reach beneath the deck while the engine or motor is running.
When to stop and get help
Do not start the mower if you cannot identify the correct controls, are unsure about required fuel or oil preparation, find a damaged or missing guard, or cannot maintain safe footing. Check the exact model’s manual; if the issue remains unclear, contact the manufacturer or a qualified service provider.
