Check that you are using an online play mode
The Minecraft Dungeons II FAQ lists couch co-op, online play through cross-play, and mixed co-op, where local players can join additional players online. Xbox Wire also describes online play with friends, matchmaking, and combinations of local and online play, with up to four players online or in couch co-op. A local-only session is not the same as joining a friend remotely.

A launch-week guide from Dungeons2DB summarizes player reports that offline and online heroes are separate, and that an offline hero may not join an online session. If you suspect this applies, create a new hero using the online option and try joining with that character. This is a player-reported lead, not an officially confirmed rule or guaranteed repair. Do not delete or overwrite your existing hero as part of this check.

Compare sign-in status and game versions
The same third-party guide recommends checking that each player is signed in with a Microsoft account and that everyone is running the same game version. Confirm each player is signed in to the account required by their platform and game, then compare the displayed game versions. These are sensible checks reported by that guide, not a published official troubleshooting procedure. The guide cautions that its suggested fixes may not work for everyone.
Check console online multiplayer access
The official FAQ says online console multiplayer and co-op require a platform-specific online subscription, sold separately. Console players should check the current multiplayer requirement and subscription status for their own platform. The FAQ does not say that every PC player needs a subscription.

If cross-play still fails
The reviewed official information confirms that cross-play exists, but does not provide a troubleshooting matrix or a guaranteed fix for connection errors. Contact Minecraft Support if the checks do not resolve the issue. Include these details so support can understand what is failing:
- Each player’s platform and the platform pairing being attempted.
- Whether the selected hero was created for online play.
- Each player’s game version and sign-in state.
- What happens when you accept or send an invite, including the exact error text.
Launch-week posts in the Minecraft Feedback index include reports about online characters and support issues, but user feedback does not establish a widespread defect or official diagnosis. The available sources also do not establish a specific outage or universal error-code fix.
