To make your laptop webcam look better, put a window or lamp in front of you, avoid a bright light behind you, and raise the laptop until its camera is roughly at eye level. Check the camera preview after each adjustment: the best light and position depend on your room, webcam, and call-app settings.
Why lighting and camera position matter
A backlit face can look dark because the camera is exposing for a bright background. HP describes this effect for supported face auto-exposure systems; the details can vary by camera. HP also identifies the light source and its intensity as factors that can make an image too dark, too bright, or discolored. HP’s webcam image-quality guidance includes device-specific advice rather than a universal rule for every laptop.

Camera height changes the viewing angle and framing. Raising the laptop brings its built-in camera closer to eye level, which Elgato recommends for video calls. Elgato’s video-conferencing setup guide, last updated June 17, 2026, suggests books, a monitor mount, or a laptop stand.

Improve the image in this order
- Open a live preview. Use the camera preview in your video-call app or your operating system’s camera app. Keep it visible while you adjust the setup.
- Put light in front of you. Face a window if practical, or move a lamp in front of you. Avoid having a bright window or lamp directly behind you.
- Adjust the light, then check again. If your face looks too dark, too bright, or oddly colored, move the light or reduce its intensity. Change one thing at a time so you can see what helps.
- Raise the laptop securely. Place it on stable books or a laptop stand so the camera is roughly at eye level. Check that the laptop cannot slide or tip, then adjust the framing.
- Try soft light near face level if needed. If you cannot use a front-facing window, Elgato recommends soft face-level light to fill shadows. A desk lamp or video-call light is optional; first try repositioning a light you already have.
- Check device-specific controls. If the image is still poor, consult your laptop maker’s camera settings and troubleshooting instructions. Some webcam software offers controls such as image quality, brightness, and contrast, but those controls are not available on every system. HP’s Windows webcam troubleshooting guide recommends good lighting and describes controls that may appear in webcam software.
Choose a setup that fits your room

Use software lighting only if your laptop supports it
Windows Studio Effects features depend on compatible hardware and an NPU. Microsoft says Portrait light is available only on Snapdragon Copilot+ PCs. Microsoft describes it as brightening your face during video calls, including in poorly lit environments, but it is not a universal Windows webcam setting. Check Microsoft’s Windows Studio Effects information to see whether your device supports the feature.

When lighting and height do not solve it
Use your laptop maker’s camera settings and troubleshooting guidance next. For a supported external Logitech camera, Logitech documents camera adjustments in its webcam settings guide. An external webcam is a separate upgrade, not a prerequisite: first position and light the built-in camera well. Image quality can also depend on the camera itself, call-app compression, network conditions, and room layout; the guidance above does not establish a universal ranking among those factors.
HP gives one narrow color caveat for selected HP business notebooks with hybrid webcam sensors: incandescent or halogen lighting and sunlight at peak brightness can cause infrared-related color issues. Follow that warning only if it applies to your HP device; it is not a general instruction for all laptop cameras. HP’s device-specific guidance explains the limitation.
