The Deserter starts when you read the Wanted Notice inside the shack near the Under the Bridge lantern in Chapter 5’s Vale of Wrath. To finish it, find the three unmarked, square beehives, collect all three Anubis Figurine Parts, and let the third part assemble the figurine automatically. Never interact with a hive marked with a red X.
The route runs from the Under the Bridge shack to the Beekeeper’s Hut, then to a roadside hive near dead horses and a carriage, and finally to a town apiary reached after opening a Stasis-controlled gate.

The quest is easy to miss because the notice, key, clue, and three parts are spread across several landmarks. The safest approach is to treat the Beekeeper’s Note as your rulebook, identify the shape of each hive before interacting, and follow the route in order.
How to start The Deserter
1. Travel to the Under the Bridge lantern
Begin at the Under the Bridge lantern in Vale of Wrath. Cross beneath the stone bridge and look for the small shack. The shack is the starting area; you do not begin the quest by speaking to a character in the open world.

2. Read the Wanted Notice
Inside the shack, interact with the Wanted Notice. Reading it starts The Deserter and establishes the search for Private Henri Dufour and the stolen Anubis Figurine. If the quest is not appearing in your journal, return to this shack and make sure the notice interaction has completed rather than merely entering the building.
Reach the Beekeeper’s Hut
Follow the route from the shack
Leave the shack and follow the route forward. At the fork, stay straight. Continue until you reach the grapple points, then use them to climb into the clearing containing the Beekeeper’s Hut.
Defeat the hut guard and take the key
A guard is stationed outside the hut. Defeat that guard and collect the Beekeeper’s Hut Key. The key is required to enter the building; searching the surrounding hives before obtaining it will not advance the objective.

Open the hut and read the desk paper
Use the key on the hut, then read the paper or diary on the desk. This interior document provides context for the beekeeping area. After reading it, go back outside and look for the separate Beekeeper’s Note.

- Hives with a red X are dangerous. Do not interact with them.
- Unmarked square hives are safe and quest-relevant. These contain the three Anubis Figurine Parts.
Do not assume every hive in a cluster is valid. Check the mark and the shape first. A hive can be close to the correct landmark and still be the wrong interaction target. If you see a red X, leave that hive alone and inspect the other square hives in the area.
Find all three Anubis Figurine Parts
Part one: the Beekeeper’s Hut apiary
Remain near the hut after reading the Beekeeper’s Note. In the hut’s apiary, locate the square hive farthest from the hut. It is unmarked. Interact with that hive to obtain the first Anubis Figurine Part.

The distance from the hut is the useful landmark here: do not choose a closer hive simply because it is easier to reach. Confirm that the target is square and has no red X before interacting.
Part two: the roadside hive by the dead horses and carriage
Continue down the route toward the wooden military encampment. Before moving through the camp, look for the area with dead horses and a carriage. A group of hives sits on the right side of the route.
Inspect the group and interact with the unmarked square hive on the right. This gives you the second Anubis Figurine Part. The red-X hives in the same general area are not alternate containers; they are traps or unsafe interactions for the purpose of the quest.

Part three: the town apiary beyond the Stasis gate
Continue through the wooden military encampment and cross the long bridge. At the gate, use Stasis on the gear mechanism to open the way. If the gate remains closed, make sure the Stasis effect is being applied to the gear itself rather than to a nearby object.
After the gate, enter the nearby door. Inside, take the first town house on the right and go through it to the back. You will reach another group of hives.
For the final part, choose the square hive to the left of the visible group. It is partly hidden and is described as the fourth hive in the cluster, which is why it is easy to overlook. Interact only after confirming that it is unmarked. This hive gives the third Anubis Figurine Part.
How the quest completes
The third part completes the set and assembles the Anubis Figurine. The assembly also triggers quest completion, so there is no separate delivery step described for The Deserter. If the quest does not complete after the final interaction, check that you selected the partially hidden square hive on the left rather than one of the marked hives in the visible group.
Quest rewards and the achievement
Guide coverage agrees that completing The Deserter awards the Hand in the Jar achievement. The item reward is less consistent across published references:

The safest precise statement is that guides report Bountiful Harvest as the reward and list Hand in the Jar as the achievement, while the MetaBot quest-data entry does not show an item or Catalyst reward. The discrepancy may come from different data models or from how the reward is displayed in-game. The completed figurine is the quest’s objective and assembly result; do not treat the conflicting item listings as proof that every edition or data view displays rewards identically.

The quest will not start
Return to the shack near Under the Bridge and read the Wanted Notice directly. Entering the shack, passing through the area, or finding the hives does not substitute for reading the notice.
The hut cannot be opened
Defeat the guard outside the Beekeeper’s Hut and collect the Beekeeper’s Hut Key. The desk paper or diary is inside, so you must complete this key step before relying on the hut documents for the clue.
You interacted with the wrong hive
Use the Beekeeper’s Note as the deciding rule: a red X means dangerous, while an unmarked square hive is the intended target. In crowded apiaries, identify the square outline and inspect the marking before pressing the interaction button.

At the hut, the correct target is the square hive farthest from the building. A nearby hive may look more convenient but is not the quest container.
You cannot identify the second hive
Move toward the wooden military encampment until you reach the dead horses and carriage. The second target is in the hive group on the right: choose the unmarked square hive on that side.
The final hive is missing
Cross the long bridge, use Stasis on the gate’s gear, enter the nearby door, and pass through the first town house on the right to its back. The last target is partly hidden to the left of the visible hive group. Look for the square fourth hive rather than stopping at the obvious front row.
The quest does not complete
The third part should assemble the Anubis Figurine and trigger completion. If that does not happen, you likely inspected another hive in the final cluster. Recheck the partially hidden, unmarked square hive on the left after reaching the town apiary.
A reliable route checklist
- At Under the Bridge, cross beneath the stone bridge and read the Wanted Notice in the shack.
- Follow the route straight at the fork, use the grapple points, and reach the Beekeeper’s Hut.
- Defeat the guard outside, take the Beekeeper’s Hut Key, open the hut, and read the desk paper or diary.
- Outside, read the Beekeeper’s Note and avoid every hive marked with a red X.
- Take part one from the unmarked square hive farthest from the hut.
- At the dead horses and carriage, take part two from the unmarked square hive on the right.
- Cross the encampment and long bridge, apply Stasis to the gate gear, and enter the town area.
- Go through the first town house on the right and out the back; take part three from the partly hidden unmarked square hive to the left of the group.
- Confirm the Anubis Figurine assembly and the Hand in the Jar achievement notification.
What matters most when comparing walkthroughs
If you are following another guide, verify four details before trusting its directions. It should identify the Wanted Notice as the start trigger, distinguish red-X hives from safe unmarked square hives, use recognizable landmarks for all three collection points, and separate guide-reported rewards from extracted quest-data listings. A walkthrough that merely says “search the beehives” omits the clue that prevents the dangerous interactions and is likely to leave the final, partially hidden hive undiscovered.
