To boot an HP All-in-One from USB for a single session, shut down the PC, connect bootable USB media, turn the PC on, and immediately press F9 repeatedly. Choose the USB drive in the Boot Menu and press Enter. The exact key and menu options can vary by model, so use the documentation for your specific All-in-One if this sequence differs.
Prepare the USB drive
The USB drive must contain bootable installation or recovery files for the operating system task. A blank storage drive will not boot; HP notes that a PC may skip a USB device without bootable files and start from local storage instead. See HP PCs – Configuring the boot order in the system BIOS.

For the Windows 11 Secure Boot scenario in HP’s instructions, use bootable USB media formatted with GPT. This guidance is specific to that scenario; it is not a universal requirement for every operating system or HP model. See HP PCs – Secure Boot (Windows 11).
Boot once from the USB drive
- Shut down the All-in-One and connect the bootable USB flash drive.
- Turn on the PC and immediately press F9 repeatedly to open the Boot Menu.
- Select the USB drive from the menu and press Enter.
These are the steps in HP’s Secure Boot guidance. If F9 does not open the menu or the USB device is not listed, check the support instructions for your exact model; HP says BIOS procedures and settings vary between computers.

Choose between the Boot Menu and BIOS setup
Use the one-time Boot Menu when you want to start from USB just this time. Changing boot order in BIOS setup changes startup priority rather than making a single selection. HP’s boot-order guidance says to press F10 while the display is blank to enter BIOS setup; the available options and their order depend on the model.
| Method | HP guidance | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| One-time Boot Menu | Press F9 repeatedly just after turning on the PC, then choose the USB drive. (HP Secure Boot guidance) | You need one USB startup. |
| BIOS boot-order setup | Press F10 while the display is blank to enter BIOS setup. HP’s cited guidance lists OS Boot Manager before USB in UEFI boot order; its Legacy list places OS Boot Manager and hard drive before USB. (HP boot-order guidance) | You want to change startup priority. The menu and order may differ by model. |
HP states that a BitLocker recovery key might be needed when changing boot order. If your PC uses BitLocker, make sure you can retrieve the recovery key before changing BIOS settings. Avoid switching to Legacy mode or disabling Secure Boot as a default fix; for HP’s Windows 11 Secure Boot scenario, the instructions point to suitable GPT-formatted media and selecting it from the Boot Menu.

- Retry the startup sequence: connect the drive before powering on, then press F9 immediately and repeatedly.
- Check model-specific instructions: HP warns that BIOS settings and procedures vary by model; consult support for the exact All-in-One rather than assuming another model’s options apply.
HP describes USB storage as one possible operating-system boot source, alongside hard drives, optical drives, and network boot, in its boot-order support guidance.
