When you click Place your order, Amazon begins validating payment; then the item is either handled by Amazon or by the marketplace seller. If Amazon fulfills it, it may move through fulfillment, sorting and delivery facilities before reaching you. A pending card authorization is not necessarily a completed charge, and the exact route and delivery timing vary by order.
What happens to payment after you place the order?
Amazon says it contacts the issuing bank to confirm the payment method. For a card payment, the bank may reserve funds with a temporary authorization. That reserve is not the same as a completed charge, even if it appears as pending or processing in your banking app. Amazon’s payment help explains that a cancelled order or a change before shipment can lead Amazon to tell the bank the authorization is no longer needed; the bank then releases the funds according to its own timing. Amazon gives 5–7 days as its stated release period, not a guarantee for every bank.

For the multi-item-order scenario described in that help page, Amazon may request one authorization for all items and charge the full amount after all items have shipped or five days after the order date, whichever comes first. This is not a universal rule for every payment method or order. Check the transaction and order details for your specific purchase.
Who handles the item: Amazon or the seller?
An Amazon-store purchase does not necessarily mean Amazon employees pack and ship the item. Amazon describes two broad fulfillment paths: Amazon fulfills the order, or a marketplace seller fulfills it under Fulfilled by Merchant. The public process descriptions do not establish a difference in quality, speed or reliability between these paths.

For Amazon-fulfilled orders, Amazon says fulfillment-center employees start picking and packing after the order is placed. Gift wrapping is available for eligible packages when requested. Seller-fulfilled orders instead depend on the seller’s handling and shipment process. Amazon’s Fulfilled by Merchant overview describes that seller responsibility.
How can an Amazon-fulfilled package travel to your door?
Amazon’s public package-journey description is an illustration of its network, not a route followed by every parcel. It describes packed packages moving by line-haul trailer; depending on destination, a package may travel through an Amazon Air site and a sort center. Sort centers group packages by ZIP code before forwarding them to delivery stations or partner facilities, such as a U.S. Post Office. At a delivery station, packages are sorted by route and loaded onto delivery vehicles. Delivery may be to your address or a pickup point such as an Amazon Locker.

Do not assume every order travels by air or visits each type of facility. The path depends on the destination, and a marketplace seller may handle the shipment outside Amazon’s fulfillment process. Amazon’s package-journey article describes the network at a high level; it does not disclose every routing decision or exception.

What do order statuses and delivery estimates mean?
Amazon’s status definitions below are seller-facing guidance. They explain labels in seller tools and should not be treated as a promise that every status appears identically on a buyer’s Orders page.

For seller-fulfilled orders, Amazon says the delivery estimate accounts for handling time, transit time, weekends and holidays, and a buffer for carrier delays. That guidance concerns seller delivery settings, not a universal formula for every Amazon delivery promise. For your purchase, use the estimate and tracking shown in the order record. Amazon’s public materials explain the broad transaction and physical delivery sequence, but they do not provide a complete technical account of its order-management software, inventory-selection algorithms, fraud-review logic, warehouse routing rules or every country- and product-specific exception. The reliable practical picture is therefore: payment is validated, one of two fulfillment paths applies, and the package’s route and timing depend on the order. A pending authorization alone does not establish that the final charge has been completed.
