If comments seem to disappear when you export a Google Doc to Word, check the downloaded DOCX in Microsoft Word’s Comments pane before assuming the comments were deleted. A file preview may not display comments, and resolved comments or version history may not carry over. Keep the original Google Doc if those records matter.
First, check whether the comments are still in Google Docs
Open the original document and inspect its comments. Google Docs keeps resolved comments accessible in the original file, and lets you filter comments by status. This tells you whether a thread is active or resolved before you troubleshoot the export. Google’s comments help explains how to view and manage comments.

Check the DOCX in an app that displays comments

In Google Docs, select File > Download > Microsoft Word (.docx). Google documents this download flow, but does not guarantee that every type of comment history transfers to DOCX. Google’s download instructions cover choosing a file type.

Open the downloaded file in Microsoft Word, not just a file preview. A Google Docs Product Expert has advised that comments may not appear in a Drive preview even when they are visible in comment-capable software; that is community guidance, not an official Google specification.

In Word, open the Comments pane and switch to its list view. Microsoft says the list view includes active and resolved comments. The available controls can vary by Word platform and version. See Microsoft’s guide to modern comments in Word.
If comments appear in Word, they were not simply hidden by the preview. If they do not, return to the original Google Doc to check the threads and preserve any discussion you need.

Know what may not transfer
A Google Docs Product Expert response dated August 2, 2020, says resolved comments and version history are not available in DOCX for a converted Docs document. The response also cautions that converting the downloaded DOCX back into a Google Doc does not restore that history, because it is treated as a new file. This is volunteer community guidance, not an official Google product specification, so it should not be read as a universal guarantee about every conversion route or software version. The practical safeguard is to retain the original Google Doc when resolved discussions or version history matter. Read the community response.

If you need a separate Google file rather than a Word export, use File > Make a copy and select Copy comments and suggestions. Google says this copy option can include resolved comments and suggestions. It is a separate workflow from downloading a DOCX; it does not restore comment history missing from an export. Google’s comments help describes the copy option.

Print comments that are already in the DOCX
Printing is separate from exporting. In Word for Windows, first confirm the comments are present, then select Review > Show Markup and enable comments. Choose File > Print and turn on Print Markup. These settings show or print markup already in the DOCX; they cannot recover comments that were not included. See Microsoft’s Word for Windows printing instructions.

A resolved thread or version history is important: preserve the original Google Doc; do not rely on a DOCX or a DOCX converted back to Google Docs to retain that history.

You need another Google Docs file with the discussion: make a copy and enable Copy comments and suggestions.
