You Spent the Morning Making Your Editor Faster: What to Do Next

Editor improvements can be useful and still displace the work you meant to do. If you spent the morning tuning settings while the actual task remains untouched, pause the tuning, identify what is blocking the task, and save editor changes for a bounded session. A practical rule from developer Serguey Asael Shinder’s article is to record an annoyance and wait until it has recurred three times before fixing it.

Why editor tuning can feel like progress

Changing a terminal prompt’s branch color, reconciling a formatter with a linter, or assigning a keybinding to run the test under the cursor are concrete tasks with visible results. The larger job may be less clear: perhaps it begins with an empty file and an uncertain first step. In his DEV Community article, Serguey Asael Shinder describes reaching lunch with a polished editor while an import job was still an empty file.

That contrast is the article’s central argument, not a conclusion established by an independent behavioral study. Tool improvements may genuinely reduce friction; the question is whether this particular change is helping with a recurring obstacle or providing a satisfying detour from work that feels unclear.

What to do when an editor annoyance appears

  1. Note it, then return to the task. Write down the annoyance when it happens instead of opening settings immediately. A note in any convenient format is enough; it does not require a special app or notebook.
  2. Wait for recurrence. Shinder’s proposed threshold is to address an annoyance after it has been recorded three times. This is his practical rule of thumb, not a scientifically established cutoff. A repeated interruption is a stronger case for a change than a one-off irritation.
  3. Batch changes into a bounded session. Schedule one limited block for configuration rather than letting each small irritation interrupt the task. Shinder gives Friday afternoon and one hour as an example, not a required schedule or universal time limit.
  4. Check whether the change pays back its setup cost. Estimate how often you will use it and how much time it is likely to save. Treat the result as a rough decision aid, not a guarantee: convenience, fewer errors, or reduced interruption may also matter.

Check the savings arithmetic before making the change

Shinder illustrates the calculation with a shortcut that saves two seconds and is used 30 times a day, alongside an hour of setup. Those inputs imply 60 seconds saved per day: two seconds multiplied by 30 uses. Recouping 3,600 seconds of setup at one minute per day takes 60 days of daily use, not about a month. This is arithmetic based on the author’s example, not a measured result.

  • A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents

For another change, use the same basic calculation: setup time divided by estimated time saved per day gives the approximate number of days to break even. If use is irregular, or the savings are hard to estimate, avoid treating a precise-looking number as certainty. A change that saves little time may still be worthwhile if it prevents an error or removes a recurring interruption—but be clear about that being the reason.

If you want to tune tools because the task feels unclear

When the urge to adjust settings appears, ask what you do not yet know about the main task. Is the input format uncertain? Is the first step undefined? Are you waiting on information or unsure how to verify the result? Write down the specific question, then choose a small action that can answer it. If the actual blocker is an empty file, opening a settings panel will not resolve it.

Shinder’s advice is to ship the job before polishing the tools around it. In practice, that means returning to the task now and keeping the captured editor annoyances for the scheduled session. The tuning can still happen—just after the work it was meant to support has a clear next step.
