You can run an encoder on an AWS Lightsail instance in Mumbai and send a continuous feed to YouTube Live, but Lightsail is not automatically suited to every always-on encoding workload. First confirm that your YouTube channel can livestream, estimate CPU and outbound data needs for your chosen video settings, then configure a supervised encoder and test recovery before relying on it.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel that is verified and eligible to livestream. YouTube says the channel must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days; check its status in YouTube Studio. A server cannot bypass an account restriction. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance explains the requirements.
- A Lightsail Linux instance in the Mumbai region, selected only after estimating sustained encoder CPU demand and outbound transfer.
- An encoder configured to send the source to YouTube’s ingest server, plus a service manager or supervisor to start it at boot and restart it after a failure.
- A protected place to store the YouTube stream key. Treat it like a password: do not expose it in public shell history, logs, or examples, and reset it if compromised.
This guide describes the configuration decisions and operating checks; it does not provide a tested FFmpeg command or a ready-made systemd unit for a particular Linux image. Confirm commands and service syntax against the operating system and encoder version you install.

Check whether Lightsail fits continuous encoding
Lightsail instances use burstable performance. AWS recommends EC2 for workloads that need consistently high CPU performance, including video encoding. A continuous encoder may therefore be a poor fit for a given Lightsail bundle even if it starts successfully. Validate the actual workload on the selected instance rather than assuming every plan can encode continuously. AWS’s Lightsail instance guidance describes the instance characteristics and this workload caveat.
Estimate CPU and transfer separately
- CPU: Encoding demand depends on the source and output configuration. Monitor sustained CPU use and stream stability during a realistic test. The available AWS guidance does not benchmark a specific Lightsail plan against a particular resolution, frame rate, or encoder.
- Transfer: Estimate outbound data from the encoded bitrate and expected running time, then compare it with the current transfer allowance for the Mumbai plan. Allow extra room for audio, protocol overhead, and reconnects.
A useful estimate is: bitrate in megabits per second × seconds streaming ÷ 8, which gives megabytes before converting to gigabytes. State whether you use decimal units (1 GB = 1,000 MB) or binary units (1 GiB = 1,024 MiB), and treat the result as an estimate rather than an exact billable total.

AWS says Mumbai plans include half the transfer allowance of plans in most other regions, and excess outbound transfer can incur charges. Check the current Mumbai plan terms and allowance before choosing a bundle; do not assume an allowance or monthly instance price based on a different region. AWS Lightsail pricing and plan details are the place to verify current regional terms.
Prepare YouTube Live and protect the stream key
- In YouTube Studio, confirm live streaming is enabled for the channel and that the account has no current restriction. Eligibility is an account-level requirement, not a Lightsail setting.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the stream you intend to run.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. Configure the encoder to use the URL and key, and keep the key private. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube rather than continuing to use the compromised credential. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance covers stream setup and credentials.
- Use RTMPS if the encoder supports it. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection between the encoder and YouTube’s ingest service. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate recommendations describe supported ingest settings.
Store credentials in a configuration file or secret-handling method with access restricted to the account that runs the encoder. Avoid placing the key in a command that will be saved in shell history or exposed through process listings or logs. The exact secure configuration method depends on the encoder and operating system.

Create and secure the Mumbai instance
- Create a Linux instance in the Mumbai region from the Lightsail console. Compare current bundle CPU, memory, storage, and regional transfer allowance against your workload estimate; do not choose solely by the lowest listed price.
- In the instance networking settings, permit only the inbound services you need. If you administer the server over SSH, restrict port 22 to your administrator IP range rather than leaving it open broadly.
- Review IPv4 and IPv6 firewall rules separately if IPv6 is enabled. Lightsail’s public firewall rules are allow rules, and the two address families are independent. Outbound traffic is permitted by the Lightsail firewall, so the encoder can initiate its connection to YouTube without opening an inbound streaming port. AWS’s firewall and port guidance explains these controls.
- A static IPv4 address can remain the same when attached to the instance and can help with stable administration or allowlists. It is not inherently required for the outbound encoder connection to YouTube.
Install the encoder and configure YouTube output
Install an encoder supported by your chosen Linux distribution and configure it to send the intended audio/video source to the YouTube stream URL using the stream key. Match the settings to your source and the encoder’s capabilities; YouTube’s current recommendations, rather than a generic preset, should guide the output.

- Protocol: Prefer RTMPS where supported.
- Bitrate: Use YouTube’s current recommendation for the chosen resolution and frame rate, and use constant bitrate (CBR) encoding as YouTube advises. Ensure the instance’s network and transfer budget can support that bitrate continuously.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second keyframe interval where the encoder allows it; YouTube recommends two seconds and says the interval should not exceed four seconds.
- Video and audio: Choose formats and frame-rate settings supported by YouTube and by your encoder. Consult YouTube’s current settings page for the applicable values rather than assuming that one configuration fits every source.
YouTube advises testing before streaming and reviewing stream health in Live Control Room. Verify that the intended audio and video arrive correctly before treating the feed as operational. YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance includes the current recommendations.

Make the process start at boot and recover from failure
An encoder running in a terminal is not an always-on service: it can stop when the session ends, the process crashes, or the instance reboots. Run it under a service manager or supervisor configured to start at boot and restart on failure. Protect the service configuration because it may reference the stream key.
- Configure the encoder with the correct source, YouTube server URL, key, and output settings.
- Run it under a service manager appropriate to the instance’s Linux distribution. Configure boot startup and a restart policy for unexpected exits; validate the service syntax for the installed operating system and encoder version.
- Start the service and check its status and logs without allowing the stream key to appear in either.
- Test a controlled encoder restart and, separately, an instance reboot. Confirm that the service starts again and YouTube receives the feed.
- Monitor CPU, outbound transfer, and YouTube stream health. A restart policy can recover from process failure, but it cannot guarantee that the instance, network, encoder, or YouTube will remain uninterrupted.
Test stream health, content rules, and ongoing operation
Use Live Control Room to check that the stream is receiving data and that video and audio are correct. Test reconnect behavior before depending on the stream, and watch the encoder’s health and the instance’s resource use under the expected continuous workload.

Continuous repetition does not exempt a feed from YouTube Community Guidelines, Terms of Service, copyright rules, or account enforcement. Only stream material you have the rights to use, and do not assume that a looping or pre-recorded feed will remain live indefinitely. YouTube, the host, connectivity, and the encoder can all interrupt service. YouTube Community Guidelines and YouTube Terms of Service apply to livestreams as well.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Wrong stream URL or key, channel ineligible, or encoder output misconfigured. | Confirm live eligibility in YouTube Studio, recheck the Live Control Room URL and key, and inspect the encoder configuration. Reset the key if it may have been exposed. |
| Connection fails or is unstable | Ingest settings, network path, or encoder configuration may be wrong. | Prefer RTMPS if supported; verify the configured destination and YouTube-recommended output settings. Review Live Control Room stream health. |
| Encoder stops after logout or reboot | It was launched interactively or the service manager is not enabled. | Configure boot startup and restart-on-failure under a service manager, then test both a process restart and an instance reboot. |
| Stream drops under sustained load | The instance may lack sustained CPU headroom, or transfer/network capacity may be insufficient. | Inspect CPU and stream health during a realistic test. Reassess the plan against the workload; AWS recommends EC2 for consistently high CPU workloads such as video encoding. |
| Unexpected transfer charges or exhausted allowance | Continuous outbound bitrate exceeded the assumed transfer budget, or Mumbai’s lower allowance was overlooked. | Recalculate from actual bitrate and uptime, include overhead and reconnects, and compare with current Mumbai-specific plan terms. |
| SSH is exposed more broadly than intended | Inbound firewall rules allow a wider address range or IPv6 was not reviewed. | Restrict SSH to the administrator’s IP range and check IPv4 and IPv6 firewall rules independently. |
