To start a YouTube channel, sign in with a Google Account, create a personal channel or one associated with a Brand Account, set up its basic identity, record a useful first video with equipment you already have, and publish it. A phone is enough to begin; you do not need to buy a camera or qualify for monetization before uploading.
1. Choose the kind of channel you need
You need a YouTube channel to upload videos, comment, or create playlists. You can create a personal channel managed by your Google Account, or use a channel associated with a Brand Account if you want a business or other name. A Brand Account can have more than one owner or manager, which may suit a channel that more than one person will manage. Some supervised experiences may limit channel creation. See YouTube’s current channel-creation instructions if the available controls differ from the steps below.

2. Create the channel and make it clear to visitors
- Sign in to YouTube with the Google Account that will manage the channel.
- Open the channel management or creation controls and choose the option to create a channel. Follow the prompts to set a picture, channel name, and handle.
- In YouTube Studio, open Customization. Use the Profile area to review the channel name, handle, description, profile picture, banner, watermark, and site links. In the Home tab, you can arrange a channel trailer, featured video, and sections.
At launch, prioritize a recognizable name or image and a short description that tells a first-time visitor what the channel covers. A polished banner, trailer, and every optional section are not prerequisites for your first upload. YouTube’s channel customization guidance describes these controls.
3. Pick a first format you can make well
YouTube supports long-form videos and Shorts. Choose based on the subject and the production approach you can sustain: a demonstration, explanation, or conversation may need room to develop, while a focused moment or quick tip may suit a Short. There is no universally best format established here, and publishing both is not a requirement. YouTube’s creator guide covers its formats and creation flow.
4. Record with the equipment you have
A mobile device is a legitimate starting camera. YouTube Help says, “All you need to get started on YouTube is a mobile device.” The right upgrade depends on a limitation you have actually encountered, not on a rule that every creator needs dedicated gear. Picture and framing
For a landscape HD video, YouTube’s mobile guidance suggests horizontal 16:9 framing, using the rear camera when possible, turning off notifications, and controlling focus and exposure. These are useful starting points, not requirements for every format. Find a steady position and check the frame before recording.
Sound
Make speech easy to understand. An onboard camera microphone may require staying about three to four feet away for the best audio, according to YouTube’s equipment guidance. A directional shotgun microphone can suit longer-range natural sound; a wireless lavalier can attach to a speaker who is farther from the camera or moving. Before buying an external microphone, check that the camera has a compatible input and that your phone’s connector or adapter supports it.

Light and preparation
Window daylight or outdoor light can work. If the scene needs more control, YouTube describes options such as a key-and-fill two-point setup, soft lights, or a camera-mounted light. Plan where you will record, check the light and sound, and keep an outline or script nearby. A phone mount or tripod can make framing easier, but neither is required to begin.
5. Upload your first video and improve the next one
Use YouTube’s Create flow to upload a longer video or create a Short. Give the video a clear title and check its details before publishing. Once it is live, note what you learned from recording and what audience response you can observe, then use that to make the next piece more useful. 6. Understand when monetization may be available
Monetization is not immediate just because a channel exists or a video is published. YouTube’s eligibility rules depend on country or region, compliance with monetization policies, feature-specific requirements, and an account review.
