Choose H.264 when you need the safer compatibility-first option or your platform’s codec support is uncertain. Consider H.265/HEVC when your destination and ingest protocol explicitly accept it, your encoder can handle it in real time, and its bandwidth efficiency or supported HDR workflow matters. The right choice depends on the entire path from encoder through platform to viewer—not on a universal quality ranking.
What changes when you choose H.264 or H.265?
H.264 (also called AVC) and H.265 (also called HEVC) are video codecs: they compress video before it is sent. HEVC can offer better compression than H.264, which may mean higher quality at a given bitrate or comparable quality at a lower bitrate. That is a directional advantage, not a guaranteed savings percentage. Results depend on content, encoder implementation, settings, and the receiving service. Google’s YouTube ingestion protocol comparison describes the efficiency advantage without establishing a fixed conversion factor.

A live stream works only when the encoder’s output, the ingest protocol, the platform’s accepted formats, and the playback path are compatible. A codec option in your encoder does not by itself mean the destination will accept it. If a service does not support the chosen codec on the protocol you use, a lower bitrate or more powerful computer will not fix that mismatch.

Choose H.264 when compatibility is the priority
- The platform or selected ingest protocol’s codec requirements are unclear.
- You need to follow a workflow that specifically calls for H.264.
- You want to avoid depending on an HEVC-capable hardware encoder that may not be available or fast enough on your system.
Consider H.265/HEVC when the whole path supports it
- The platform and selected ingest protocol explicitly accept HEVC.
- Your encoder has suitable hardware support and can encode your resolution and frame rate reliably in real time.
- Reducing bandwidth use at comparable quality is useful, or your workflow needs a supported HDR path.
For multiple destinations, check each one. The least permissive destination may dictate your settings, or you may need separate encodes. Do not assume that two streams at nominally comparable bitrates will look identical.

Platform and protocol checks
YouTube Live
YouTube’s current live encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) encoding and a two-second keyframe frequency, and says not to exceed four seconds. Its guidance names H.265/HEVC for HDR. These are YouTube platform recommendations; verify the current settings for your resolution and chosen ingest protocol before going live, since guidance can change. See Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and YouTube Live Streaming Ingestion Protocol Comparison.
Twitch
Twitch’s broadcaster guidance covers ingest bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and encoder considerations. Do not infer current Twitch codec acceptance from YouTube’s settings: check Twitch’s current Broadcasting Guidelines and confirm the options available in your own streaming workflow before selecting HEVC.

Apple-device HLS delivery
Apple’s HLS authoring specification for Apple devices permits H.264/AVC and HEVC, among other formats, but their packaging requirements differ: H.264 may use fragmented MP4 (fMP4) or MPEG transport stream (MPEG-TS), while HEVC uses fMP4 under this specification. Apple also sets profile, level, and live bandwidth-conformance requirements. These are Apple-device HLS authoring requirements, not a universal rule for every HLS player. Consult the HLS authoring specification for the workflow you are building.
Check whether your encoder can handle HEVC live
Real-time HEVC encoding depends on hardware and workload. OBS’s format guidance says HEVC support is through specified hardware encoders: NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel QSV, and Apple VT. Availability depends on your platform and hardware; an HEVC menu option is not proof that the system can sustain your chosen resolution and frame rate without missed frames. Check the current OBS Audio/Video Formats Guide and test representative motion and scene complexity on the actual encoder.

OBS’s ranking of AV1, HEVC, and H.264 for high-quality local recording is about recording formats; it is not a universal recommendation for live delivery. Live compatibility is decided by the destination and protocol as well as encoder performance.
Set the stream using the destination’s requirements
- Confirm destination support. Check the platform’s current accepted codec and the specific ingest protocol you will use. For YouTube, consult its encoder settings and protocol comparison; for another service, use that service’s current guidance.
- Match the output settings. Set resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and HDR options to the platform’s current requirements for that output. YouTube recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe frequency, and no more than four seconds; use YouTube’s current bitrate table for your target resolution rather than applying a single bitrate to every stream.
- Check encoder availability and load. If choosing HEVC, confirm your hardware encoder supports it and can sustain the intended resolution and frame rate. Test a representative scene, including fast movement and detailed imagery.
- Run a private or otherwise appropriate test before the event. Confirm the platform accepts the feed and check for dropped or missed frames, playback issues, and HDR behavior if applicable. If the stream will go to more than one destination, test each output path.
- Change one variable at a time when troubleshooting. If ingest fails, first verify codec and protocol support; if the feed is accepted but unstable, examine encoder load and the platform’s bitrate and frame-rate requirements.
Common problems and fixes
The platform rejects the stream
Likely cause: The selected codec is not accepted for that ingest protocol, even if another protocol or service supports it. Fix: Recheck the destination’s current codec-and-protocol guidance, then switch to a supported combination. If uncertain, use H.264 where the platform explicitly accepts it.

HEVC is missing or the encoder struggles
Likely cause: The device, operating system, encoder, or real-time workload does not support the selected HEVC path adequately. Fix: Check the encoder’s hardware support and test at the target resolution and frame rate. If it cannot encode reliably, use a supported alternative such as H.264.
The stream looks poor despite HEVC
Likely cause: HEVC does not guarantee a particular quality at a given bitrate; scene complexity and encoder settings matter. Fix: Check the destination’s current bitrate guidance, verify the intended resolution and frame rate, and compare representative test footage. Do not assume a fixed bitrate reduction will preserve identical visual quality.

HDR does not appear as expected
Likely cause: HDR requires a compatible encoder, platform ingest configuration, and playback path; merely selecting HEVC does not establish that the full chain is HDR-ready. Fix: Confirm the platform’s current HDR requirements and verify settings and playback on the intended devices. Apple HLS workflows must also follow Apple’s applicable format requirements.
Copyright, reused content, and continuous streams
Codec choice does not grant rights to the video or music you broadcast. Before using recordings, confirm you have the necessary rights and follow the destination’s current copyright and monetization policies. A stream being live, looped, or technically accepted does not itself establish permission to use its content or eligibility for monetization.
