You can record a YouTube video with a phone you already own, or record and save a file on a computer using separate recording software. YouTube does not record webcam footage on a computer; once your video is saved, upload it through the YouTube app or YouTube Studio.
Choose how you’ll record
Use a phone
A phone camera is enough to get started. Record with the camera app, then upload the saved video in the YouTube app. YouTube’s recording and upload guidance describes mobile recording as a way to begin without buying a separate camera.

Use a computer
Record with software on your computer and save the resulting video file. YouTube’s computer workflow is for uploading a video you have already made; it does not include a webcam recording feature. After saving the file, upload it through YouTube Studio.

Use a separate camera
A point-and-shoot camera may suit a straightforward camera setup, while a DSLR can offer more creative control at the cost of extra weight and complexity. Choose based on what you want to make, not because a dedicated camera is required. If you plan to connect an external microphone, check that the camera has a compatible microphone input before buying one.

Prepare the shot before pressing record
- Pick a location and frame. Decide what belongs in the shot, check the background, and consider whether people or property in the scene require permission. Respect other people’s privacy.
- Choose the orientation. For conventional horizontal video, hold the phone horizontally to frame for 16:9 HD.
- Set up the camera. Use the rear phone camera when practical; it records at a higher resolution than the front camera. If your phone offers manual focus and exposure and you are comfortable using them, set and lock them to avoid visible changes during a take.
- Check the equipment. Test the camera, microphone, and lights you intend to use, and charge your devices. For a larger shoot, prepare backups such as batteries, memory cards, or hard drives.
- Silence interruptions. Turn off phone notifications and remove distractions that could interrupt a take.
Get clear light and sound
Use soft, even light
At home, try facing a window for soft daylight. Outdoors, shade can reduce harsh highlights and dark shadows. A white card or reflector can bounce light back onto the subject. If available daylight and room lighting do not work for the shot, a soft light or camera-mounted light is an optional next step.
Make the voice easy to hear
- Move closer to the microphone and make sure you are not covering the phone’s mic.
- Choose a quieter spot. Turn off fans, close windows, and soften distracting reflections by covering hard surfaces with soft materials.
- If the built-in camera microphone leaves the speaker too far away or the surroundings are noisy, consider a compatible external mic. YouTube’s equipment guidance notes that an onboard camera mic may require staying three to four feet away for the best audio.
- A lavalier mic attaches to a person and can help when the speaker is moving or farther from the camera. A shotgun mic is directional and can capture natural sound from a longer range. Check compatibility and the camera’s external-mic connection before purchasing.
Optional equipment: buy only to solve a problem
Try what you already have first: rest a phone on a stable surface, move closer to a quiet location, or use a window for light. If that does not address the issue, choose an accessory for the specific limitation.

Save and upload the finished video
- Record and save the file. On a phone, use the camera app; on a computer, use recording software. Make sure the recording is saved before leaving the recording app.
- Upload from a computer. Open YouTube Studio, choose the upload option, select the saved file, and enter details such as its title and visibility. YouTube’s computer upload instructions explain the Studio workflow.
- Upload from a phone. Use the YouTube app to select the saved video and complete the upload details, including the audience setting requested in the mobile workflow.
Recording and uploading are separate steps: first make and save the video, then choose it in the upload workflow.
