How To Start A Podcast And Make Money

A practical guide to launching a podcast, distributing it across major platforms, avoiding RSS and copyright mistakes, and turning a focused audience into revenue.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Starting a podcast is no longer mainly a microphone-and-mixer problem. The difficult parts are choosing a show people can identify with, publishing it reliably, distributing the RSS feed correctly, and connecting the audience to a revenue source.

You can begin with a modest setup, but you should decide how the show might earn money before producing dozens of episodes. Advertising is only one option—and often not the best first option for a small, focused podcast.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

1. Choose a podcast idea with a business path

A broad topic such as “technology” or “business” is difficult to position. A specific audience and recurring problem give listeners a reason to return and give you something relevant to sell later.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Define these five things before recording:

Decision Practical question
Audience Who is this for—freelancers, new founders, Android users, students, or another identifiable group?
Promise What will listeners consistently learn, solve, or experience?
Format Will it be solo, interview-based, co-hosted, educational, narrative, or news-focused?
Schedule Can you publish weekly, twice a month, or on another sustainable cadence?
Revenue path Will the show lead to sponsorships, affiliate sales, subscriptions, services, products, or memberships?

For example, “a podcast about laptops” is weakly defined. “A weekly buying guide for remote workers choosing laptops under $1,000” has a clearer listener, recurring need, and potential affiliate or sponsorship opportunities.

 • [XLR Connection Upgrade-Ability] To use XLR connection, connect the podcast microphone to an audio interface (or mixer) using a separate XLR cable (NOT Included) . Do not base the plan on guaranteed advertising income. Platform monetization depends on your country, audience, content, eligibility, reviews, and policy compliance. A small show can earn earlier by selling a service, recommending relevant products, or building a paid community.

2. Prepare the first episodes

You do not need a professional studio, but speech must be clear and consistent. A noisy room and constantly changing microphone distance will make even useful content difficult to follow.

Basic equipment and software

 • A microphone that produces intelligible speech.
 • Headphones for detecting background noise, clipping, and echo.
 • A quiet recording space with soft furnishings where possible.
 • Audio editing software or an editing service.
 • Cover artwork, a show description, category, and contact email.
 • A podcast host that provides a public RSS feed.

Record a short test before buying expensive equipment. Check for fan noise, room echo, keyboard sounds, mouth clicks, and volume differences between hosts or guests. Good recording technique is more valuable than a costly microphone placed in a poor environment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A sensible launch package

 1. Record a one- to two-minute trailer explaining who the show serves.
 2. Finish two or three complete episodes before launch.
 3. Create a simple website or landing page.
 4. Add an email signup form.
 5. Prepare short social clips, quotes, or written excerpts for promotion.

Apple supports Full, Bonus, and Trailer episode types and recommends a short trailer for a new show. Having several episodes available also gives a new listener enough material to decide whether to follow the show.

3. Use a podcast host and protect the RSS feed

A podcast host stores the audio files and generates the RSS feed that listening platforms read. Unless you are comfortable maintaining XML, media hosting, bandwidth, redirects, and feed validation, use a dedicated hosting provider.

Apple’s RSS requirements include artwork, at least one episode, required RSS tags, a publicly accessible feed, and valid episode enclosures. The feed must also support HTTP HEAD and byte-range requests so apps can display artwork and stream or download episodes.

Each episode needs an enclosure similar to this:

It also needs a globally unique identifier that never changes:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Dates must use RFC 2822 formatting, such as:

XML is case-sensitive. Escape special characters—use & rather than a literal ampersand inside XML content—and use safe ASCII filenames and URLs where required by the platform.

RSS mistakes that can break distribution

 • Duplicate enclosure URLs: platforms may ignore episodes that appear to point to the same audio file.
 • Changed GUIDs: an edited identifier can make an old episode look new, creating duplicate downloads or fragmented analytics.
 • Private feeds: a public show submitted to Apple needs a publicly addressable feed.
 • Invalid XML: an unescaped ampersand, incorrect date, malformed quotation mark, or wrong tag capitalization can stop validation.
 • Host cancellation during migration: keep the old feed active until a permanent RSS redirect has been tested.

Before moving hosts, preserve the original feed URL if possible. Otherwise configure a permanent redirect through the old host and confirm that Apple, Spotify, and other platforms follow it before closing the old account.

4. Submit the podcast to Apple Podcasts

For an RSS-based show, Apple Podcasts is a directory rather than your normal free audio host. The current submission process is:

 1. Sign in to Apple Podcasts Connect.
 2. Click the Add (+) button.
 3. Select New Show.
 4. Choose Add a show with an RSS feed.
 5. Enter the RSS feed URL and click Add.
 6. Review the artwork, title, description, and other show information.
 7. Set Content Rights and confirm that you have rights to third-party material.
 8. Configure Availability, including countries, distribution, transcripts, release timing, and show claiming.
 9. Optionally add a subscription.
 10. Click Save and publish after validation and review.

Apple validates the feed before submission. Fix every validation error rather than treating warnings as unimportant. A show marked Published still needs at least one episode added and published before it appears to listeners.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can test a feed without submitting it publicly:

 • iPhone or iPad: Podcasts → Library → Edit → Add a Show by URL…
 • Mac: Podcasts → File → Add a Show by URL…

This lets you inspect artwork and playback, but it does not place the show in Apple’s public directory. See Apple’s RSS testing instructions for details.

5. Distribute it to Spotify, Amazon Music, and other apps

If you use Spotify for Creators, the show is automatically available on Spotify. It is not automatically submitted everywhere else. Use the RSS feed to submit the show separately to Apple Podcasts, Amazon Music, and other services.

In Spotify for Creators, find the feed at Settings → Availability. Spotify says most platforms publish a submitted show within a few hours, although some manually review submissions. New or updated episodes commonly appear within a few hours but can take up to 24 hours.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Spotify may verify ownership through the email address in your RSS feed. For a Spotify-hosted show, use Settings → Availability → Add email to RSS feed. That address becomes publicly visible, so use an inbox you monitor without exposing a personal address unnecessarily. If another host supplies the feed, use an address whose inbox you can access.

6. Add the podcast to YouTube correctly

A YouTube podcast is normally a playlist containing full-length episode videos. It is not simply an MP3 upload.

To create one on desktop:

 1. Open YouTube Studio.
 2. Click Create.
 3. Select New podcast.
 4. Choose Create a new podcast.
 5. Enter the title, description, visibility, and square thumbnail.
 6. Click Create.
 7. Add full-length episode videos.

To add existing videos, use YouTube Studio → Content → Podcasts → select the podcast → Add videos. You can upload new videos or select videos already on the channel.

7. Ways to make money from a podcast

Sponsorships

Possible placements include host-read pre-roll, mid-roll, or post-roll ads; episode sponsorships; newsletter bundles; website placements; and integrated video segments.

Only make product claims you can support. Do not say a product worked for you if you have not used it, and do not repeat claims the advertiser cannot legally substantiate.

If you have a financial, employment, personal, family, free-product, discount, or affiliate relationship with a brand, disclose it clearly in the episode. The FTC says that merely writing “affiliate link” may not explain that you receive compensation. A spoken disclosure could be:

This episode is sponsored by [Brand]. We may earn a commission if you purchase through our link.

Put the disclosure where listeners can understand it—not only in show notes. The wording must accurately describe the relationship.

Paid subscriptions

Useful subscriber benefits include ad-free episodes, early access, bonus episodes, private feeds, archive access, community access, and live Q&A sessions. The paid offer should add a clear ongoing benefit rather than arbitrarily hiding the free show.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For Apple Podcasts subscriptions, you need the Apple Podcasters Program. In Apple Podcasts Connect, add a promotional banner and icon, set monthly pricing, optionally add annual pricing or a free trial, provide a support site where required, attach subscriber audio to at least one show or episode, and submit the subscription for review.

Apple requires subscription benefits to be accurately described and provide ongoing value. Content available elsewhere for free at the same time in the same country or region generally cannot be charged for as an Apple subscription benefit. Annual pricing must not exceed 12 times the monthly price.

Apply through YouTube Studio → Earn → Apply Now → Start. You must accept the relevant terms and link or create an AdSense for YouTube account. Meeting the numbers does not guarantee acceptance; YouTube reviews the channel for policy compliance.

Shorts Feed watch time does not count toward the 4,000-hour requirement. Private, unlisted, deleted, and ad-campaign views also do not count.

Affiliate revenue

Affiliate links fit shows that naturally recommend books, software, microphones, courses, services, travel products, or other equipment. Use a trackable link and explain that you earn a commission when someone buys. Recommend products that genuinely fit the episode instead of turning every discussion into a sales pitch.

Products and services

This is often the most controllable route for a small specialist podcast. Potential offers include consulting, coaching, freelance work, courses, paid reports, books, events, templates, software, merchandise, and professional memberships.

In this model, the podcast is audience acquisition for a higher-value offer. A show with a few hundred highly relevant listeners can be more commercially useful than a large general-interest show if those listeners are potential clients.

Listener support

One-time tips, monthly memberships, private communities, live sessions, bonus feeds, and listener-supported platforms can work when the audience feels involved in the show. Keep the free episodes useful and explain exactly what supporters receive.

 • Have a legal address in an eligible market, including the United States.
 • Publish at least three episodes.
 • Reach 2,000 global consumption hours in the last 30 days.
 • Reach 1,000 unique listeners or viewers on Spotify in the last 30 days.

All listed criteria must be met, and availability can change by market. Spotify says sponsorships through this program currently apply to video episodes. Check the latest eligibility page before building your revenue forecast around it.

9. Avoid copyright and disclosure problems

Get permission or licenses for music, sound effects, film and television clips, news footage, artwork, guest-owned recordings, and third-party scripts or readings. Crediting the owner does not grant permission, and a short clip is not automatically fair use.

Copyright claims can affect RSS distribution, YouTube podcast eligibility, and monetization. YouTube warns that podcast playlists may lose podcast features when they contain material the creator does not own.

Also keep guest permissions in writing. Your release should cover recording, editing, distribution, clips, transcripts, and monetization. This avoids disputes when a successful interview is later reused in video or promotional material.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

10. Measure the business, not only downloads

Track the numbers that connect publishing to revenue:

 • Plays or downloads by episode.
 • Completion and retention.
 • Follows and subscriptions.
 • Listener geography and traffic sources.
 • Email signups.
 • Call-to-action click-through rate.
 • Affiliate conversions.
 • Paid conversion rate.
 • Revenue per episode.
 • Sponsor renewal rate.

On YouTube, view podcast reporting at YouTube Studio → Analytics → Overview → select the podcast. For deeper reporting, choose YouTube Studio → Analytics → Overview → See Podcast Analytics. Available data includes performance, traffic sources, audience demographics, retention, and revenue.

A practical review cycle is to examine each episode after seven and 30 days. If listeners leave early, improve the opening. If people finish but do not click, revise the call to action. If an affiliate converts while another does not, make future recommendations more specific rather than simply publishing more episodes.

Launch checklist

 1. Define a narrow audience, promise, format, schedule, and first revenue path.
 2. Record and edit a trailer plus two or three complete episodes.
 3. Create artwork, show details, a contact email, and a landing page.
 4. Publish through a podcast host with a public RSS feed.
 5. Validate the feed and test it by URL in Apple Podcasts.
 6. Submit the RSS feed to Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Amazon Music, and other desired platforms.
 7. Create a YouTube podcast playlist with full-length episode videos.
 8. Publish useful episodes consistently before adding aggressive promotions.
 9. Introduce one clearly disclosed monetization method that fits the audience.
 10. Review retention, email growth, conversions, and revenue—not downloads alone.

FAQ

How much does it cost to start a podcast?

You can start with a microphone, headphones, editing software, cover artwork, and podcast hosting. The exact cost depends on whether you edit and design everything yourself or pay freelancers. Spend first on clear audio and reliable hosting rather than expensive studio equipment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How many listeners do I need to make money from a podcast?

There is no universal minimum. A focused show can earn from affiliate sales, services, products, or listener support with a relatively small audience. Platform programs have their own thresholds: Spotify currently lists 100 listeners in 60 days for eligible native subscriptions, while YouTube’s expanded Partner Program starts at 500 subscribers plus additional activity requirements.

Do I need to upload my podcast separately to every platform?

Usually, yes. A hosting provider gives you an RSS feed, but Spotify says uploading to Spotify does not automatically submit the show to Apple Podcasts, Amazon Music, and every other service. Submit the feed separately and check each platform after publication.

Can I upload an MP3 directly as a YouTube podcast?

YouTube’s normal podcast workflow uses a playlist of videos, with each full episode represented by a video. You can upload video versions or use YouTube’s RSS delivery option, which may create static-image videos. An MP3 alone is not the normal YouTube Studio podcast format.

The Bottom Line

Start with a narrow show concept, a reliable RSS feed, and a launch batch of several useful episodes. Distribute it beyond one listening app, create a proper YouTube podcast playlist, and choose a revenue path that matches the audience. For many new shows, services, products, affiliates, memberships, or subscriptions are more realistic early opportunities than waiting for large advertising deals.
