How To Start An Online Store In 8 Steps
1. Choose a product, customer, and business model
Start by deciding exactly what you will sell and who is most likely to buy it. “Everyone” is not a useful customer description. A narrower audience makes it easier to choose products, write product pages, select marketing channels, and set prices.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Answer these questions before buying inventory:
- What problem does the product solve?
- Who needs or wants it most?
- Why would that customer choose your product over an alternative?
- What price will the market accept?
- How will you source, make, store, and deliver it?
- What happens if the customer wants a refund or replacement?

| Model | How it works | Main consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Manufacturing | You make or commission the product. | More control, but usually more upfront cost and compliance responsibility. |
| Wholesale | You buy finished products and resell them. | You need enough margin after wholesale cost, shipping, fees, and returns. |
| Private label | A supplier makes a product sold under your brand. | Brand control comes with inventory and product-safety obligations. |
| Dropshipping | A supplier ships orders directly to customers. | Lower inventory risk, but less control over stock and delivery times. |
| Print-on-demand | Items are produced after a customer orders. | Useful for testing designs, though per-unit costs can be higher. |
| Digital products | You deliver files, access, software, or other digital goods. | Delivery, licensing, refunds, and customer support need clear rules. |
Before committing to a large purchase, test demand with a small catalog, sample listings, preorders where appropriate, or a limited production run. Calculate the contribution margin for every order:
Selling price
− product cost
− payment-processing fee
− packaging and shipping subsidy
− expected returns/refunds
− advertising cost per order
= contribution margin
This is not the same as net profit, because it may not include software, labor, insurance, rent, or income taxes. Also, sales-tax collections generally are not business revenue; they are amounts collected for government remittance.
2. Choose and register the business
You do not universally need to form an LLC before selling online. A sole proprietor operating under their own legal name may not need to register a separate business, while using a fictitious name may require a DBA registration. The correct answer depends on your structure, location, name, employees, and activity.
Review the requirements for:
- Business-name or DBA registration
- State registration
- City or county business licenses
- Seller’s permits and sales-tax registration
- Product-specific permits or approvals
- Home-occupation rules if you operate from home
The U.S. Small Business Administration’s registration guide explains that requirements depend on the business structure and location. Its licenses and permits guide is a useful starting point, but you should also check the websites of your state and local agencies.
Apply for an EIN directly through the IRS when appropriate. The IRS issues EINs for free. Partnerships, LLCs, corporations, and tax-exempt organizations generally need one; sole proprietors may need one if they have employees or certain tax obligations. If you are forming an LLC, partnership, or corporation, form the entity with the state before applying for the EIN.
Open a business bank account and keep business and personal transactions separate. This makes bookkeeping, tax reporting, refunds, and financial analysis easier. Consider business insurance as well, especially if you sell physical products, operate from home, visit customers, or have employees.
3. Pick the store platform and domain
Your platform determines how much of the technical operation is managed for you. The main choices are:
- Hosted ecommerce platforms: easier setup, hosting, checkout, updates, and maintenance, usually in exchange for monthly and transaction fees.
- WordPress with WooCommerce or another self-hosted system: more control and extensibility, but you manage hosting, backups, updates, and security.
- Marketplace-first selling: fast access to existing shoppers, but you operate under marketplace rules, fees, and account policies.
- Custom storefront: appropriate when standard platforms cannot support your workflow, but it requires more development and maintenance.
Compare the following before committing:
- Monthly, transaction, payment, and app fees
- Payment providers available in your country
- Inventory, order, and fulfillment tools
- Shipping and tax integrations
- Support for digital products, subscriptions, or memberships
- Marketplace and social-commerce integrations
- Ability to export products, orders, and customer data
- Staff permissions and customer-data controls
Buy or connect a custom domain that matches your brand. A temporary platform domain is fine while building the store, but a custom domain is generally better for recognition and customer trust.

Shopify setup paths
On Shopify, the Online Store sales channel is available on Basic and higher plans. Shopify automatically assigns a myshopify.com domain, and Shopify says that domain can be changed only twice. To connect a custom domain, go to:
Shopify admin → Settings → Domains
The store’s general setup checklist includes the store name, legal business name, business address, currency, weight unit, shipping, taxes, payment gateways, and domain.
4. Build the catalog and storefront
A product page should answer the questions that otherwise stop a customer from buying. Do not rely on attractive photos alone. Include:
- Accurate product title and description
- Original photos or video
- Price and currency
- Size, color, quantity, or other variants
- Stock status
- Dimensions and weight
- Materials, ingredients, compatibility, or care instructions
- Digital-file format and delivery method, if applicable
- Processing and shipping times
- Return restrictions
- Safety warnings or required disclosures
On Shopify, add a product from:
Shopify admin → Products → Add product → enter details → Save
A Shopify product needs a title and price at minimum, but the product editor also supports descriptions, media, variants, inventory, tags, and other information.
Use a responsive theme and create the basic pages customers expect:
- Home page
- Shop or catalog page
- Collection or category pages
- Product pages
- About page
- Contact page
- Shipping policy
- Return and refund policy
- Privacy policy
- Terms or customer terms, where appropriate
- FAQ page for recurring pre-sale questions
In Shopify, edit the theme at:
Shopify admin → Online Store → Themes → Customize
Link your shipping, return, privacy, and other policies from the store menus. Customers should be able to find important conditions before checkout, not only after an order problem occurs.
5. Configure payments, taxes, shipping, and fulfillment
Payments
Activate at least one payment method your target customers can use. Depending on your country and platform, this could include cards, digital wallets, bank payments, buy-now-pay-later products, or manual payment methods.
Shopify payment settings are located at:
Shopify admin → Settings → Payments
Payment and payout settings may require specific staff permissions. Use a payment provider that supports your business location and product type, and secure both your store account and the email address used for payouts.

A hosted checkout reduces development work, but it does not eliminate every security or compliance responsibility. PCI DSS obligations depend on how payment pages are implemented. The PCI Security Standards Council’s SAQ A guidance says eligibility requires all payment-page elements to originate only from a PCI DSS-compliant service provider, with additional conditions for embedded forms. Hosted tools such as Stripe Checkout can simplify implementation, but they do not transfer responsibility for fraud, account security, business practices, or all compliance duties.
Sales tax
Do not enable sales-tax collection in every state just because your store accepts online orders. First determine where you have an obligation to collect tax, register with the relevant agencies, and then configure those jurisdictions. Online sellers often need to consider economic nexus rules, physical presence, marketplace activity, and product-specific treatment.
For Shopify’s U.S. tax setup, the path to add a state is:
Shopify admin → Settings → Taxes and duties → United States
→ Add new state → select state → enter Sales tax ID → Collect taxes
Shopify can calculate tax, but the merchant remains responsible for determining where to register, collecting correctly, filing returns, and remitting tax unless an applicable automated filing service is being used. Shipping can also be taxable, depending on the jurisdiction. The related Shopify setting is:
Shopify admin → Settings → Taxes and duties
→ Global settings → Charge tax on shipping rates → Save
Shipping and fulfillment
Define your fulfillment operation before launch:
- Processing time
- Destinations you serve
- Shipping methods and prices
- Free-shipping threshold, if any
- Tracking procedure
- Lost-package procedure
- Delivery exclusions
- Return address
- International duties and taxes
Advertised delivery promises must be realistic. Under the FTC’s Mail, Internet, or Telephone Order Merchandise Rule, sellers need a reasonable basis for shipping promises. If no shipping time is stated, the general default is shipment within 30 days. When an order cannot ship on time, the seller must provide the required delay notice and give the customer a choice to agree to the delay or receive a prompt refund.
Do not claim “ships today,” “in stock,” or “two-day shipping” unless your inventory and workflow can consistently support those statements.
For international orders, explain who acts as importer of record and who pays duties, import taxes, and brokerage charges. If you use Shopify duty calculations, products need country-of-origin information and HS codes. Estimated duties can still differ from the amount ultimately assessed by customs.

6. Add customer and business policies
Your policies should describe what your business actually does. At minimum, explain:

Windows 7 or later computers can also print via Bluetooth. For Mac users with M1 or M2 CPUs, install the app and connect to the printer via Bluetooth. Note: All devices cannot be directly connected to Bluetooth and need to be used through the app
- Print via USB: For Windows (7 and later), Mac OS,Chrome OS, you can connect the desktop label printer via USB cable. Note that Mac OS only works with USB connection, you can not print via Bluetooth

High speed brings high efficiency and helps your business grow faster! 203 DPI makes printing clearer. No ink, no toner, only thermal labels needed. Both fanfold labels and roll labels could be used. - Which products qualify for returns
- Return window and condition requirements
- Who pays return shipping
- Refund timing and method
- Exchanges and replacements
- Damaged, missing, or incorrect orders
- Cancellations
- Preorders and backorders
- Digital-product refunds, if applicable
- International duties and taxes
- How customers can contact you
Do not copy a generic policy that promises faster shipping, broader refunds, or privacy practices you cannot provide. Consumer-protection laws may still apply even if your terms say customers waive rights, and some states impose requirements that differ from your preferred policy.
If you send marketing email in the United States, comply with the CAN-SPAM Act. Commercial messages must use accurate header and subject information, identify themselves as advertisements where required, include a valid physical postal address, and provide an opt-out method. Honor opt-out requests.
7. Test the complete buying process and launch
Test the store as a customer on desktop and mobile before accepting real orders. A successful test order is not enough; failure paths often reveal the most expensive problems.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open the storefront and check navigation, search, categories, and product pages.
- Select every important variant and confirm that stock changes correctly.
- Test discount codes, taxes, shipping rates, and address validation.
- Complete a payment with each important payment method.
- Test a failed payment and confirm the customer receives a useful message.
- Check order-confirmation and fulfillment emails, including the sender address.
- Test cancellations, refunds, partial fulfillment, and out-of-stock products.
- Submit contact forms and follow the return instructions as a customer would.
- Check broken links, keyboard navigation, readability, and page speed on a mobile connection.
On Shopify, preview the storefront from:
Shopify admin → Sales channels → Online store
→ hover over Online store → click the eye icon
Before making a password-protected Shopify store public, select a plan, finish testing, and remove the storefront password. Also verify that the primary domain resolves correctly, HTTPS is active, analytics records purchases, inventory is accurate, policies are visible, and no placeholder text or test products remain.
Give staff only the permissions they need. A store account with unnecessary access increases the impact of a stolen password or accidental change.

Choose a small number of channels that match your customers instead of opening every social account at once. Options include search content, email, organic social media, paid search, paid social, affiliate or creator partnerships, marketplaces, and local events.
Measure business outcomes rather than vanity metrics. Useful measurements include:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Metric | What it helps you understand |
|---|---|
| Product-page views | Whether visitors reach the products you want to sell. |
| Add-to-cart rate | Whether product presentation and pricing create buying interest. |
| Checkout-start rate | Whether customers move beyond browsing. |
| Purchase conversion rate | How often visits become completed orders. |
| Average order value | How much each order contributes before costs. |
| Customer-acquisition cost | How much marketing spend is needed to generate an order. |
| Refund rate | Whether product expectations, quality, or descriptions need attention. |
| Repeat-purchase rate | Whether the store is generating returning customers. |
| Margin after marketing and fulfillment | Whether sales are economically worthwhile. |
Search visibility is not automatic. Google recommends making products reachable through ordinary HTML links, such as menus linking to category pages and category pages linking to product pages. Googlebot generally does not submit searches into a site’s search box. If some products cannot be reached through navigation, use a sitemap or Merchant Center feed.

Product structured data can help Google understand prices, availability, reviews, and other product information. It may make pages eligible for richer search results, but it does not guarantee rankings or rich-result display. Test markup with Google’s URL Inspection tool and submit a sitemap.
For the first promotion, choose one measurable experiment—for example, a welcome-email sequence or a small paid campaign. Judge it by completed purchases and contribution margin, not just impressions, likes, or clicks.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Forming an LLC because you assume it is mandatory: business registration depends on structure, location, name, and activity.
- Assuming every seller needs an EIN: EIN requirements depend on entity type, employees, and tax obligations.
- Collecting sales tax everywhere: first determine your obligations and register where required.
- Assuming the platform handles all tax duties: calculation, registration, filing, and remittance are not automatically the same thing.
- Promising delivery dates without operational evidence: inaccurate shipping claims can create refund and notification obligations.
- Treating hosted checkout as a complete PCI solution: payment implementation and security responsibilities still matter.
- Expecting schema markup to guarantee rankings: structured data improves machine understanding but does not guarantee search placement.
- Buying dozens of products before launch: a small, accurate catalog is easier to photograph, describe, stock, test, and fulfill.
FAQ
Do I need an LLC to start an online store?
No. A sole proprietor using their own legal name may not need to form a separate entity. Requirements depend on your location, business name, activity, employees, and chosen structure. Check state and local rules before selling.
Recommended Free Tools
Do all online stores need an EIN?
No. Partnerships, LLCs, corporations, and tax-exempt organizations generally need an EIN. Sole proprietors may need one if they have employees or certain tax obligations, and may also obtain one for banking or state-tax purposes.
Does Shopify automatically collect and pay all sales tax?
No. You must determine where you have a tax-collection obligation, register with the relevant agencies, configure the correct jurisdictions, file returns, and remit tax. Platform tax calculations do not automatically complete every compliance duty.
What should I test before launching an online store?
Test product variants, inventory, discounts, taxes, shipping, address validation, successful and failed payments, confirmation emails, fulfillment, refunds, cancellations, returns, contact forms, mobile usability, accessibility, broken links, analytics, and domain security.
The Bottom Line
Launch with a small catalog and a complete buying process rather than a large catalog with unfinished operations. Validate the product economics, register and configure the business correctly, publish honest product and shipping information, test real customer paths, and use purchase and margin data to decide what to improve next.
