Native Celestia staking means delegating TIA to a validator through a supported wallet such as Keplr Wallet’s Mainnet Beta interface or through the Celestia command-line client. You receive a variable share of that validator’s rewards after commission, while accepting bonding illiquidity, validator-performance risk, possible slashing and—if your tokens are vesting—additional lockup restrictions. This guide shows the staking workflow, explains what the published inflation figures do and do not mean, and separates genesis vesting schedules from staking unbonding.
What staking TIA actually does
Celestia uses delegated proof-of-stake. Validators operate the network and participate in consensus; delegators assign their TIA’s voting weight to one of those validators without running validator infrastructure themselves. Celestia’s staking documentation describes the result plainly: “Staking TIA as a validator or delegator enables you to earn staking rewards from the network.”

Delegation does not transfer ownership of your coins to the validator. Your wallet authorizes a protocol transaction, and the chain records the delegation. The validator’s commission is deducted from the rewards attributable to delegators, so your realized return depends on the validator and on network parameters rather than on a fixed product rate.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Rewards: a variable share of validator rewards after commission; no guaranteed APY is established in the official material covered here.
- Liquidity: changing or ending a delegation creates an illiquidity period. The exact transaction flow and timing should be checked in the wallet and current chain interface.
- Security exposure: validator downtime can interrupt rewards, and double signing can slash the validator and bonded delegators.
- Participation: TIA holders can vote on certain network parameters and community-pool spending.
Delegation is different from liquid-staking tokens. A liquid-staking service may issue a tradable derivative, but it adds smart-contract, custody, bridge and redemption risks that do not exist in the same form when you delegate directly on Celestia.

Prepare before you delegate
Use the correct asset and leave fee balance
Celestia’s native staking denomination in transaction tooling is utia. One TIA equals 1,000,000 utia, while most wallets display amounts as TIA. Keep some unbonded TIA in the account for transaction fees; delegating the entire balance can leave you unable to claim rewards, redelegate or submit an undelegation transaction.
Confirm the network and account
Check that your wallet is connected to the intended Celestia network and that the account shown for signing is the one holding your TIA. Read the transaction details on the wallet’s confirmation screen rather than approving a request from an unexpected browser tab or message.
Evaluate validators instead of choosing the first result
Before signing, review the validator’s commission, uptime and missed-block history, self-delegation, governance record, concentration effects and identity. Also consider how the operator handles keys, how responsive it is to incidents and whether its delegation is adding to an already concentrated part of the active set. Wallets and explorers can expose different fields; where a value is not shown, treat it as unknown rather than assuming it is favorable.

|---|---|---|
| Commission | Current rate and any stated change policy | A higher commission leaves less of the validator’s gross reward for delegators. |
| Uptime and missed blocks | Recent and historical performance in the wallet or explorer | Downtime can stop reward accrual and can trigger jail conditions. |
| Self-delegation | Amount of the operator’s own stake | Shows whether the operator has capital exposed alongside delegators; it is not a guarantee of competence. |
| Governance record | Past votes, public identity and stated operating practices | Delegating also contributes voting power, so operator choices can affect the network. |
| Decentralization | Whether your choice increases concentration among a few large operators | Spreading stake can reduce dependence on a small group of validators. |
| Custody and key management | Who controls signing keys and how incidents are handled | Poor operational security can lead to outages or a double-sign event. |
| Responsiveness | Documented contact channel and incident history | Fast communication is useful when a validator is jailed or changes commission. |
How to stake TIA in a wallet
Keplr Wallet workflow
Celestia identifies Keplr Wallet as a Mainnet Beta interface. Interface labels can change, but the transaction sequence is generally:
- Open the wallet, select the Celestia network and unlock the account that holds TIA.
- Open the staking, delegate or earn section. If the wallet offers several chains, verify that the asset is Celestia TIA rather than a similarly named token on another network.
- Choose a validator and inspect its commission, performance and identity in the validator details view.
- Enter the amount to delegate in TIA. Retain enough liquid TIA for fees and future transactions.
- Review the destination validator, amount, estimated fee and account address on the confirmation screen.
- Approve the transaction and wait for the wallet to show a confirmed transaction hash.
- Record the validator address and confirmation hash. Use the wallet or an explorer to verify that the delegation is bonded and to monitor commission or status changes.
Do not assume that a redelegation or undelegation also claims your accumulated rewards. After CIP-30, changing a delegation position no longer automatically claims rewards. Accrued rewards remain available until you submit a reward-withdrawal message, identified in the protocol as MsgWithdrawDelegatorReward. Wallets may combine or separate these actions, so read the current transaction summary before signing.
How to stake and manage TIA with the CLI
Advanced users can use the Celestia application binary. The commands below show the operations exposed by the CLI reference; substitute your own account, validator and amount values, and use the binary’s --help output for the network endpoint, fee and gas options required by your installation.

Delegate
celestia-appd tx staking delegate $VALIDATOR_ADDRESS $AMOUNT_UTIA --from $KEY_NAME
$AMOUNT_UTIA is an integer amount in utia, not a decimal TIA display value. Confirm the validator address and signing account in the transaction output before broadcasting.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

celestia-appd tx staking unbond $VALIDATOR_ADDRESS $AMOUNT_UTIA --from $KEY_NAME
Unbonding starts an illiquidity process rather than producing immediately spendable TIA. The chain and wallet show the resulting completion time. A separate, explicit 21-day period applies to delegations affected by double-sign slashing, as described in the slashing section below.
Withdraw rewards
celestia-appd tx distribution withdraw-rewards $VALIDATOR_ADDRESS --from $KEY_NAME
Run the reward withdrawal only after checking the fee balance and the validator address. If you delegate to multiple validators, each validator position may require its own withdrawal transaction unless your wallet offers a batch flow.
Verify each transaction
- Check the transaction result for a successful code and retain the hash.
- Confirm the delegation, unbonding entry or reward withdrawal in a trusted chain viewer.
- Never paste a seed phrase or private key into a terminal, website or support chat.
How Celestia staking rewards are determined
There is no fixed official APY
Your reward is a share of the validator’s rewards after commission. The realized amount changes with the total bonded stake, validator uptime, commission, inflation and governance or parameter changes. A displayed APY from a third-party dashboard is a snapshot, not a promise that your account will earn that rate.
Celestia’s supply documentation records the following inflation history:
| Protocol point | Inflation figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Genesis-era policy | 8% annual TIA inflation | Initial protocol inflation, not a guaranteed delegator return. |
| v4 Lotus upgrade, July 2025 | Reduced from approximately 7.2% to approximately 5.0% | A protocol-level change affecting issuance; it does not equal an individual wallet’s APY. |
| v6 upgrade, November 2025 | Approximately 2.5% | The later documented inflation level; realized staking returns still depend on other variables. |
| Long-term target | 1.5% | A target parameter, not a present-tense return guarantee. |
Two additional supply figures help put rewards in context: genesis supply was 1,000,000,000 TIA, and 2% of block rewards are allocated to the community pool rather than paid directly to delegators. Inflation and reward allocation can be changed by protocol upgrades or governance, so use current chain data when estimating future income.

Commission reduces the delegator share
Validators charge a fee on rewards earned for their delegators. Compare commission alongside uptime; a low commission does not compensate for prolonged downtime, and a high uptime record does not remove the cost of a high commission. Check whether the validator can change its commission and whether the wallet displays the effective rate at the time you sign.
Claiming rewards after CIP-30
Following CIP-30, a redelegation or undelegation does not automatically withdraw pending rewards. Rewards remain accrued until the delegator calls MsgWithdrawDelegatorReward. This is a protocol behavior, not merely a wallet preference. If a wallet presents a combined flow, verify whether it includes a reward-withdrawal message; otherwise, submit the withdrawal separately.
Locked, vesting and unlocked TIA
Can locked TIA be staked?
Celestia’s supply documentation says both locked and unlocked genesis tokens may be staked. Staking does not erase the original vesting terms. For an ordinary account, staking rewards unlock upon receipt and add to circulating supply according to the supply rules described by Celestia.
CIP-31 lockup-account behavior
Lockup (vesting) accounts have a special reward rule. CIP-31 states: “When a lockup account receives rewards from staking, the system adds the reward amount to the lockup balance and recalculates the daily unlock rate over the remaining lockup period.” In practical terms, a vesting account can earn rewards without receiving immediately spendable liquidity. The reward is added to the restricted balance and released according to the recalculated schedule.
Genesis allocation schedules
The following schedules describe genesis allocations, not staking unbonding:
| Allocation | Unlock schedule |
|---|---|
| Public allocation | Fully unlocked at launch. |
| R&D and ecosystem | 25% unlocked at launch; the remaining 75% unlocks continuously from year 1 through year 4. |
| Initial core contributors | 33.33% unlocks at year 1; the remainder unlocks through year 3. |
| Seed and Series A/B backers | 33.33% unlocks at year 1; the remainder unlocks through year 2. |
Ask two separate questions when planning liquidity: “When does this account’s vesting balance unlock?” and “When does this delegation become withdrawable after unbonding?” A token can be unlocked but bonded, or it can be a vesting reward that remains restricted even after it is credited.

Unbonding, jailing and slashing risks
Downtime and jailing
If a validator is offline for more than 25% of a rolling 5,000-block window, Celestia’s slashing documentation says it is jailed for one minute, removed from the active validator set and unable to propose or earn rewards during the jail. The event can interrupt your reward stream even when you did nothing wrong. Monitor validator status after delegation and reassess if downtime becomes persistent.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Double signing
Double signing is more severe. The validator loses 2% of its stake, is permanently removed from the validator set and bonded delegators receive the same percentage slash. Celestia’s documentation states: “If a validator gets slashed, delegators bonded to that validator will also have the same percentage of their delegated funds slashed.” Delegations affected by this event enter a 21-day unbonding period before they can be moved or withdrawn. After they unbond, delegators can delegate to another validator.
Market and custody risks
- Price risk: TIA’s market price can fall while your tokens are bonded, so staking rewards may not offset a market decline.
- Key risk: losing or compromising wallet keys can permanently block access or allow an attacker to move funds.
- Operator risk: a validator can change commission, suffer an outage or make an operational mistake.
- Liquidity risk: bonded TIA cannot necessarily be sold or transferred when you want it; plan for the chain’s unbonding mechanics.
- Liquid-staking risk: derivatives add smart-contract, bridge, redemption and secondary-market risks, and they are not native delegation.
Native delegation versus liquid staking
Choose the model that matches your need for liquidity and your tolerance for additional infrastructure risk.
| Consideration | Native delegation | Liquid-staking route |
|---|---|---|
| Liquidity while staked | TIA remains bonded until the applicable unbonding process completes. | A derivative may be transferable, but its market depth and redemption terms vary. |
| Smart-contract or bridge exposure | No additional liquid-staking contract is required for the delegation itself. | Contract, bridge and integration failures become additional risks. |
| Validator diversification | You select validators directly and can spread delegations. | Diversification depends on the liquid-staking protocol’s design. |
| Redemption mechanics | Governed by Celestia’s delegation and unbonding rules. | Governed by the derivative’s redemption queue, liquidity and contracts. |
| Fees | Validator commission plus network transaction fees. | Validator commission, protocol fees and possible trading or redemption costs. |
| Governance rights | Delegated voting power participates according to Celestia’s governance rules. | Rights depend on how the derivative and its protocol handle governance. |
Staking and Celestia governance
Delegated TIA is not only a reward position. TIA holders can vote on a subset of network parameters and on community-pool spending. The community pool receives 2% of block rewards. Review a validator’s governance record before delegating if you care how your voting power is represented; some wallets let you vote directly, while others may require a separate governance screen.
Governance participation does not remove validator risk. A validator can vote responsibly and still experience downtime, commission changes or a key-management incident, so governance alignment should be one selection factor rather than the sole criterion.

A practical monitoring routine
After the initial delegation
- Confirm the delegation is bonded and the validator is in the active set.
- Save the transaction hash and validator address in your records.
- Check that your wallet still has a fee balance.
- Review commission and validator status periodically, especially after network upgrades.
When you want to change validators
- Compare the destination validator’s commission, uptime, identity and concentration impact.
- Check whether your wallet offers redelegation or requires an unbond-and-new-delegation sequence.
- Review pending rewards. Because of CIP-30, do not assume the position change claims them.
- Approve only the transaction that names the intended source and destination validators.
- Wait for the wallet to show the new delegation status before treating the move as complete.
When a validator is jailed or slashed
- Identify whether the event is a temporary downtime jail or a permanent double-sign removal.
- Check the wallet’s unbonding entry and the amount affected by any slash.
- For a double-sign event, account for the documented 21-day unbonding period before planning a move or withdrawal.
- After the affected delegation is unbonded, select a different validator using the same review criteria.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Delegating the entire balance
Leaving no liquid TIA can prevent fee-paying transactions. Keep a reserve before signing and replenish it before a planned reward withdrawal or validator change.

Confusing vesting with unbonding
A genesis unlock schedule controls when an allocation becomes transferable; an unbonding process controls when a delegation can be withdrawn. They are independent clocks. CIP-31 can also place staking rewards from a lockup account into the restricted balance, so a reward notification is not proof of immediate liquidity.
Using a headline APY as a promise
Inflation history and a dashboard’s estimated yield are not guarantees. Commission, bonded stake, uptime and governance parameters change the amount that reaches your account. Estimate with current validator and network data, then treat the result as variable.
Ignoring reward withdrawal
After CIP-30, changing a delegation does not automatically claim rewards. Check for an explicit reward-withdrawal transaction and verify the resulting balance after confirmation.

Trusting an unknown signing request
Never approve a transaction that obscures the validator address, amount or fee. Use the wallet’s native staking screen or a locally managed CLI, verify the account and retain transaction hashes.
Is staking TIA right for you?
Native delegation may fit if you can leave TIA bonded, understand that rewards vary, and are willing to monitor validator performance. It is less suitable for funds that must remain immediately sellable, for a vesting account whose rewards must stay restricted, or for an account that cannot securely manage keys and fee balances.
For a measured allocation, split stake among reputable validators rather than concentrating everything with one operator, keep an emergency liquid balance, and record the dates and conditions attached to every delegation. If you choose a liquid-staking product instead, evaluate its contracts, redemption queue, validator diversification, fees and governance model separately; its risks are not the same as native Celestia delegation.
Bottom line
To stake TIA, delegate through a supported wallet or the celestia-appd staking commands, retain fee liquidity and choose validators using commission, uptime, security and decentralization evidence. Rewards are variable and must be withdrawn explicitly after CIP-30. Locked TIA can be staked, but CIP-31 may keep rewards inside the vesting schedule. Downtime can pause rewards, while double signing can impose a 2% slash and a documented 21-day unbonding period on affected delegators. Treat staking as a long-horizon network participation decision—not as a guaranteed yield product.
