A retailer breach can give scammers a convincing reason to contact you, but a familiar logo, brand name or personal detail does not prove a message is genuine. Don’t click links, open attachments or call numbers in an unexpected email or text. Check the claim through the retailer’s official app or website, or a customer-service number you find independently.
Why a breach can trigger convincing scams
When a retailer announces a data breach, scammers may use the news as a timely pretext to impersonate the company or offer fake help. A message might claim your account is locked, a payment failed, suspicious activity was detected, or you must confirm information to protect an order. The story may sound plausible because it refers to a real breach; that does not make the sender legitimate. The Associated Press advises people affected by a breach to stay alert for messages claiming to come from the organization and to contact it through official channels (AP).

A suspicious message does not prove your information was part of a breach. Nor does a message become trustworthy because it includes your name or other personal details. Scammers can use such details to make a pitch feel credible, so verify the claim separately.

Warning signs in an email or text
- Pressure to act now: The message threatens account closure, a lost delivery, a penalty or another immediate consequence if you delay.
- A link or attachment: It urges you to sign in, open a file, follow a link or resolve a supposed problem through the message.
- A request for sensitive information: It asks you to confirm a password, payment details, personal information or a one-time verification code.
- An unexpected payment or account update: The FTC says legitimate companies will not unexpectedly email or text a link asking you to update payment or account information. Treat that request as a strong warning sign, then check independently rather than assuming every unexpected retailer message is fraudulent.
- A sender or web address that does not match: A display name can be forged, a logo can be copied, and a sender address or URL can be altered by a small character difference. Check for misspellings, added words or unfamiliar domains without clicking the link.
Bad grammar is not a reliable test: scam messages can be polished. Focus on what the sender wants you to do and whether you can verify the claim through a separate channel. The FTC’s guidance puts the first check plainly: “If you get an email or text message that asks you to click on a link or open an attachment, ask yourself: Do I have an account with the company or know the person who contacted me?” (FTC)

How to verify a breach message safely
- Pause. Don’t click, reply, open an attachment or call a number provided in the message.
- Open a trusted channel yourself. Use the retailer’s official app, type a web address you already know, or independently find its customer-service contact information.
- Check for the same notice there. Look for a breach announcement or account alert on the official site or app. If the message claims there is a problem with your account or order, ask customer service through that trusted channel.
- Act only after you verify the claim. If the retailer confirms an account issue, follow instructions in its official app or website—not a link from the unverified message.
Do not use contact details supplied by the suspicious email or text, even if its branding looks right. The FBI warns that spoofing can alter an email address, sender name, phone number or URL by just a small character difference (FBI). The FTC also recommends independently checking whether you have an account with the company that contacted you (FTC).
What to do if you clicked, downloaded something or replied
Take the steps that match what happened. You do not need to assume that merely opening a message infected your device; act on any link, file or information you actually interacted with.

Protect your accounts beyond this message
Use a unique, strong password for each account and enable MFA wherever it is available. A password manager can help you manage unique, long passwords; CISA recommends strong, unique passwords (CISA). MFA makes it harder for someone to log in with a stolen password. Options can include codes sent by text or email, authenticator-app codes and security keys; no factor makes phishing impossible (FTC).
