First check which format the TV is actually receiving; then check the player, HDMI connection and TV picture controls. The right menu names and settings vary by model, so use your device manuals rather than copying another TV’s values.
Why can a 4K Blu-ray look wrong?
“4K” describes image resolution, not whether high dynamic range (HDR) is active. A 4K disc may use HDR10, Dolby Vision, or no HDR format, and the player and TV must support the format being played. Sony notes that HDR requires both HDR-capable content and a compatible setup: Sony’s 4K HDR guide.

Even with the correct HDR signal, displays differ in luminance and contrast. Tone mapping adapts HDR imagery to a particular screen’s capabilities, so the same title can look different on different TVs. Dolby’s professional guidance explains this display-dependent mapping: Dolby HDR10 metadata guidance.

Confirm the disc’s format and the TV’s picture mode
Check the disc packaging or player information for HDR10 or Dolby Vision support. A 4K UHD disc is not automatically a Dolby Vision disc. When Dolby Vision is active, some TVs identify it through the selected picture mode; Sony describes this indicator in its Dolby Vision TV guidance.

Note the format or picture mode reported by the TV and whether the issue happens only during HDR playback. If several titles or devices look washed out, that observation can help narrow down where to investigate, but the symptom alone does not identify a specific fault.
Check every device between the player and TV
For Dolby Vision, the disc or content, player, TV, and any receiver or soundbar carrying the video signal must all support Dolby Vision. As a diagnostic step, connect the player directly to the TV to bypass an intervening device. Sony’s instructions for the UBP-X800M2 describe this setup and are specific to that model: Sony UBP-X800M2 Dolby Vision setup.

Player output settings can also affect what reaches the screen. Sony documents how the UBP-X800M2 handles Dolby Vision, HDR10, and SDR displays, and says its Dolby Vision Output setting defaults to Off. Do not assume another player has the same default or menu path; check its manual.
Verify the TV’s HDMI input format and cable
Some TVs require the HDMI input to be set to an enhanced signal format to accept the intended 4K/HDR signal. Sony’s 4K-device guidance recommends checking HDR compatibility, using a high-quality high-speed HDMI cable, and setting the relevant input to Enhanced; the exact menu label varies by TV: Sony 4K device support.

For the UBP-X800M2 Dolby Vision setup, Sony specifies a Premium High Speed HDMI cable or one that supports 18 Gbps. That requirement applies to the described setup; it does not mean a new cable will fix a TV tone-mapping or picture-setting issue. If the format still is not detected after changing the input setting, follow the player and TV manufacturers’ instructions for reconnecting or restarting the devices.
How to adjust a TV that receives HDR correctly
Once the TV reports the expected format, review the HDR picture mode and relevant controls. Sony describes brightness as the screen’s luminance control, gamma as affecting the middle range, black level as controlling signal level, and HDR tone mapping as adjusting brightness and gradation according to HDR content luminance. Not every TV offers the same controls or ranges: Sony picture settings guide.

- Upscale your DVDs to near HD quality
- Easy set-up with included HDMI cord
- Boot up in less than a second with super quick start mode
- Keep things simple with the new user-friendly interface
- Choose the TV’s HDR or Dolby Vision picture mode for the format currently playing.
- If Dolby Vision is active, check whether the TV offers a brighter Dolby Vision mode that better suits the room’s lighting.
- Adjust one relevant control at a time, such as brightness, gamma, black level, or HDR tone mapping, and check both dark detail and bright highlights.
A change that lifts shadow detail can also alter the intended contrast or highlights. Avoid applying fixed values from another model: panel behavior and available settings differ.
When are brightness changes part of HDR playback?
Dolby Vision uses dynamic metadata, which can adjust image settings from scene to scene. HDR10 uses static metadata, based on average values for the content, as Dolby explains in its HDR10 and Dolby Vision comparison. Panasonic’s DP-UB45 FAQ also notes that scene brightness can change during Dolby Vision or HDR10+ playback: Panasonic DP-UB45 FAQ. If brightness varies only as scenes change, check which format is active before treating that behavior as a fault.

| Format | Metadata behavior | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| HDR10 | Static metadata; settings are based on average values for the content, according to Dolby. | Confirm that the disc, player, TV, and HDMI path support the HDR signal. |
| Dolby Vision | Dynamic metadata can optimize image settings by scene. | Confirm compatible content, player, TV, and any receiver or soundbar in the signal path. |
Neither format is guaranteed to look brighter or better in every home setup. The screen’s luminance, contrast, and tone mapping also shape the result.
When should you escalate the problem?
If the TV reports the expected format, the HDMI input and devices support it, and careful picture adjustments do not help, consult the exact manuals or official support pages for the player, display, and receiver or soundbar. There is no single setting established as a universal fix for dark or washed-out HDR.
