Scammers can cover a real parking-meter code with a sticker, send a code in an urgent text or email, or put one in an unsolicited package. Before you pay, sign in, share details, download anything, or grant permissions, check where the code leads and verify the request independently.
How QR code scams work
Scanning a code can open a web address or prompt another action. The risk comes from what the code leads you to do: a counterfeit payment or login page might collect your information, while a malicious link could prompt a download. The FBI has also described QR-code tampering used to redirect payments, steal data, or introduce malware. FBI IC3’s January 2022 alert documents those mechanisms; it does not establish how common QR scams are today.

Fake stickers at public payment points
A code on a parking meter or sign can look as if it belongs there and still be fraudulent. The FTC warns that scammers have covered legitimate parking-meter QR codes with their own, directing people to fake payment pages. Check whether the code appears to be an added sticker or otherwise looks altered. If anything feels off, pay through the parking operator’s official app or website, or use contact details you verify independently. FTC parking-meter guidance, September 2026.
Codes in unexpected texts and emails
A message may pose as a delivery notice, bank warning, toll or traffic notice, or another urgent request. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service advises against scanning unexpected codes in messages, particularly when the sender pressures you to act immediately. USPIS quishing guidance, updated February 20, 2025. In April 2026, the FTC warned about traffic-violation texts using QR codes to seek personal details, install malware, or steal money. QR codes in unsolicited packages
A package you did not order—or one with no clear sender—may contain a code intended to tempt you into scanning. The FBI says a QR code in a brushing-scam package may seek personal or financial information or prompt a malicious download. Do not scan it to find out what it does. FBI alert dated July 31, 2025.
Check a code before you act
- Ask whether you expected it. Consider who placed or sent the code and whether you were expecting a payment request, account warning, delivery notice, or package. Treat an unsolicited code—especially one paired with urgency—as suspicious.
- Preview the destination. If your camera or QR reader shows a URL, read the domain carefully before opening it. Look for misspellings or letters substituted to imitate a familiar organization. A convincing logo or message is not proof that the site is genuine.
- Verify through a separate route. For a payment, sign-in, or account warning, open the organization’s official app or type its known website address yourself. You can also contact it using details you already trust. Do not rely on a link or phone number supplied by a suspicious message. FTC guidance on verifying unexpected requests.
- Stop if the next step does not make sense. Do not enter a password or card details, download a file, grant permissions, or pay through a destination you cannot verify. For a public payment, use the operator’s independently verified payment method instead.
Keep your phone’s operating system and apps updated, and use strong, unique passwords and multifactor authentication (MFA) for accounts. These practices support device and account security; they do not authenticate a QR code’s destination.

What to do if you scanned a suspicious code
If you opened a page but did not provide information
Close the page. Do not download anything or grant permissions. A scan alone does not necessarily mean your device or account has been compromised; focus on whether you entered information, paid, downloaded a file, or approved a request.
If you entered a password or personal details
- Change the exposed password promptly, including on any other account where you reused it.
- Contact the organization the page claimed to represent using its official app, known website, or independently verified contact details—not the suspicious page.
- If you shared payment details, check your bank and card transactions for activity you do not recognize and contact the issuer through a trusted channel.
- Report the incident to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. For suspicious QR activity involving an unsolicited package, the FBI directs people to report it to IC3.
What the available figures do—and do not—show
The FTC reported $470 million in losses to scams that started with text messages in 2024, in an April 2025 publication. That figure covers text-message scams overall, not QR-code scams specifically, so it should not be read as a QR-code loss estimate. FTC text-scam data spotlight.
