Haiku is an open-source desktop operating system inspired by BeOS, and it is compelling precisely because it feels like a coherent personal-computing environment rather than a collection of disconnected interfaces. It is not a continuation of the original commercial BeOS: Haiku reimplements BeOS R5 while adding and improving parts of the system. That lineage makes it inviting to explore, but it does not mean every BeOS program runs or every PC is supported.
What Haiku OS is—and what “successor” means
Haiku is an operating system for personal computers whose design takes inspiration from BeOS. The Haiku project describes its goals as sensible defaults, clean code, and a unified desktop environment. Calling Haiku a BeOS successor is useful shorthand for the lineage, but it needs a qualification: Haiku is an open-source reimplementation of BeOS R5, not a continuation of the original commercial operating system. Its early releases aimed to resemble BeOS R5, while the Haiku team has also introduced additions and improvements of its own. Haiku User Guide
That distinction helps explain the appeal. Haiku is trying to offer a unified desktop with a recognizable design philosophy, not merely reproduce old software for nostalgia. The result can be interesting to use in its own right, even if its smaller ecosystem and unfinished edges make it a different proposition from a mainstream desktop OS.

Can Haiku run BeOS applications?
Sometimes, but compatibility depends on which Haiku build you choose. The project describes binary and source compatibility that lets many BeOS applications run, including some without modification. That is not a promise that every BeOS application or driver will work. Haiku User Guide

Those labels and compatibility details are from the Haiku downloads page; “Modern, Fast” is the project’s positioning, not a comparative speed test. The R1/beta5 release notes likewise say BeOS R5 compatibility is available only in 32-bit images. Check the current download page when choosing an image, since build offerings can change. Which Haiku image should you try?
For a first look, start with a stable release image rather than a nightly build. Haiku distinguishes its regular stable releases from nightly images intended mainly for development and testing.
- Stable release: The practical choice for exploring the system. Review the download page’s current build options and compatibility notes before installing.
- Nightly image: Intended mainly for development and testing. The project warns that nightlies may be broken and include less bundled software than regular releases. Haiku downloads
If you would rather not install Haiku on a physical computer, the project points to virtual machines as an option for trying it. Its materials do not require a particular VM product. Haiku project repository

Will Haiku work on your computer?
The project says Haiku is compatible with a large variety of hardware, but that general statement is not a guarantee for a particular laptop, desktop, or peripheral. Its downloads page identifies x86 and x86_64 for the official stable image line and describes non-x86 variants as unsupported development builds. Neither general claim establishes whether a specific Wi-Fi adapter, graphics card, or other device will work. Check documentation for the exact machine and hardware before planning a bare-metal install. Haiku’s technical documentation says the OS still supports the legacy device-driver architecture introduced with BeOS, but that fact alone does not establish that any particular old BeOS driver is usable. Why Haiku is worth exploring
Haiku’s strongest draw is its ambition to make the desktop feel like one considered system, paired with a direct connection to BeOS’s design heritage. The open-source reimplementation keeps that history accessible while giving the Haiku team room to make its own changes. For someone curious about operating-system design, that combination is more interesting than a simple retro replica.
The trade-off is that lineage is not the same as broad compatibility or polish. BeOS application support is tied to a specific 32-bit build, hardware support needs checking machine by machine, and nightly images may be unreliable. Treat Haiku as a distinctive system to explore—not as a drop-in replacement whose compatibility can be assumed.
