How to Spend Catalysts Wisely on Weapon and Skill Upgrades in Valor Mortis

Spend Catalysts at a Lantern before a dangerous route, then invest according to the combat loop you actually use. Stamina is the best first stat for a parry-and-finisher build, health is more valuable while you are learning bosses or trading hits, and supernatural power matters when transmutations supply a large share of your damage or utility. Put workbench materials into one dependable weapon instead of spreading them across a collection, and buy a skill only when it solves a specific encounter or traversal problem.

That approach fits the game’s core promise: the official 2026 Steam description says, “Each death is a chance to grow stronger,” while its combat system revolves around “parries, dashes, and visceral finishers.” Catalysts, weapon materials, transmutations and Ambers all strengthen a different part of that loop, so the best build is the one that removes your current failure point rather than a universal level order.

What Catalysts are for—and why you should bank them

Catalysts are the currency used for character progression at Lanterns. They let you raise core attributes, buy available skills or transmutations, and later correct a build through respec. Weapon improvement uses separate materials at a workbench, so a large Catalyst balance does not automatically make every weapon stronger.

Unspent Catalysts remain at the location where you die. You can attempt to recover them, but another failed recovery can put that entire bank at risk. The safest routine is therefore simple:

  1. Return to the nearest Lantern after a meaningful haul.
  2. Spend enough Catalysts to secure the upgrade you have already chosen.
  3. Only then push into an unfamiliar room, boss arena or long route with no convenient checkpoint.

This is not an argument for spending immediately on whatever is cheapest. It is a risk-control rule: a Catalyst sitting in your inventory has no combat value and is exposed to a recovery failure. A Catalyst converted into a stat, skill or respec at a Lantern cannot be lost from that death.

When holding a small reserve makes sense

Keep a reserve when you are one purchase away from a clearly useful threshold, such as a transmutation needed for the next route or a stat level that lets you complete your normal parry-and-dodge sequence. The reserve should have a defined purpose and a short time horizon. Hoarding because you are waiting for a perfect numerical breakpoint is not supported by any published Catalyst-efficiency figures; the available information describes qualitative roles and visible progression rather than level-by-level costs or damage percentages.

Choose the stat that supports your combat loop

There is no responsible universal order such as “always max health first.” The three relevant priorities solve different problems. Use the table as a diagnostic tool: identify what is stopping you from executing your plan, then spend on that weakness.

Stat focus What it supports Prioritize it when What it does not solve
Stamina Parries, dodges and finishers You run out of stamina during a defensive chain, cannot reach a finisher after a successful parry, or your aggressive plan repeatedly ends with an empty resource bar. It will not add the raw weapon damage of a workbench upgrade or make a mistimed parry safe.
Health A larger margin for learning and recovering from mistakes You are dying while still learning a boss, routinely trade hits, or survive a mechanic only when the execution is perfect. It does not fix a route that fails because you lack mobility, crowd control or stamina.
Supernatural power Greater value from transmutations Your damage or control plan depends on transmutations and their current output or usefulness is limiting the build. It is a weak answer if you rarely activate transmutations and are instead losing to ordinary melee exchanges.

A practical early-game order

For an aggressive parry-and-finisher player, the first meaningful block normally belongs in stamina. Add supernatural power when transmutations are part of the attack loop, not merely an occasional experiment. If you are still learning enemy timings or bosses are killing you through unavoidable-looking trades, put that first block into health instead. Once the immediate survival problem is under control, move toward the stat that makes your chosen weapon and skill package function more consistently.

Use failed attempts as evidence

After a death, write down the actual failure rather than the feeling it created. “I was hit twice because I mistimed the parry” points toward health while learning and practice, not necessarily a new damage stat. “I landed the parry but could not dodge the follow-up because the bar was empty” is a stamina case. “The transmutation never controlled the group long enough to create an opening” may justify supernatural power or a different transmutation. This turns each run into a decision about a repeatable failure mode.

Weapon upgrades: concentrate materials at the workbench

The workbench changes a weapon’s raw damage while preserving that weapon’s traits and skills. That makes weapon improvement a dependable way to increase the output of the moves you already understand, but it also creates an opportunity-cost problem: materials divided among several weapons delay the point at which any one of them reaches a useful damage level.

Pick a carry weapon

Choose the weapon that actually ends most of your encounters. It may be the cutlass or another weapon whose range, timing and skills fit your hands. The correct choice is not the weapon with the most impressive description; it is the one you can use reliably against ordinary enemies and bosses. Once chosen, keep most workbench materials on that carry until a second weapon offers a concrete answer to a problem the first cannot handle.

What a focused upgrade buys you

  • Visible progression: the workbench shows a direct raw-damage increase rather than an indirect benefit.
  • Consistent execution: stronger versions of familiar attacks let you keep the same spacing, parry timing and finisher plan.
  • Lower opportunity cost: one developed weapon reaches useful performance sooner than several half-upgraded options.
  • Preserved identity: weapon-specific traits and skills remain available after the damage upgrade.

When to stop upgrading the carry temporarily

Pause weapon spending when the next increase is small relative to a stat or transmutation that would fix your current failure. For example, if your weapon already defeats regular enemies within your normal attack sequence but you cannot complete that sequence because stamina empties, the stat upgrade has the higher practical value. Conversely, if you survive comfortably and the workbench displays a meaningful damage increase on the weapon you use most, take the weapon upgrade before buying a novelty skill.

Skills and transmutations: buy solutions, not a checklist

Skills and transmutations are most valuable when they change what you can do in a specific situation. Their jobs fall into four useful categories: crowd control, mobility, offensive enhancement and recovery. The best purchase depends on the next obstacle, not on a fixed tier list.

Crowd-control transmutations

Choose a crowd-control option when groups are the reason a route is failing. A flame-style effect, for example, can create space or interrupt several enemies at once. Its value is measured by whether it lets you isolate targets, reach a Lantern or preserve healing resources—not by how impressive its single-target number looks.

Mobility transmutations

Mobility becomes a priority when a shortcut, ledge or inaccessible route is blocking progress. A movement ability can save more Catalysts over time by opening a safer path than a small damage increase would. Before buying, confirm that the route actually requires a purchased ability; some story and secret-area unlocks grant abilities without a Catalyst cost.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Offensive transmutations

An offensive enhancement is worth the investment when it creates a reliable damage window, especially against a boss whose exposed phase is short. It should fit your weapon’s timing and resource budget. If activating it leaves you unable to dodge or finish the sequence, the nominal damage gain may not improve the encounter.

Recovery transmutations

Recovery utility has disproportionate value on long routes where a mistake forces a costly retreat. Prioritize it when you are reaching the end of an area with too few resources to survive the final rooms, rather than buying it simply because it is available.

Check for non-Catalyst unlocks first

Story progression and secret areas can provide abilities without a Catalyst purchase. Before reserving currency for a skill, inspect the route you are pursuing and determine whether the ability is an unlock reward. Spending first and discovering the free route later is a permanent opportunity cost unless you respec and pay again.

Ambers add a second progression layer

Ambers are passive modifiers rather than another conventional stat line. Their variety makes them more build-defining than the comparatively simple core skill tree, so evaluate them as a package with your weapon and transmutations.

The first Amber slot opens at level 5. Additional slots arrive every ten levels until you have five slots in total. Because slots are limited, select passives that reinforce your actual loop: a parry-and-finisher setup benefits from effects that preserve that rhythm, while a mobility or transmutation-focused setup should favor passives that keep its resource and positioning demands manageable.

Do not delay a useful core upgrade for a hypothetical Amber

An unlocked slot is potential, not an automatic power spike. If your current stat, weapon or transmutation addresses a failure you can already identify, take that concrete upgrade first. Revisit Amber choices when a new slot opens or when your combat pattern changes.

A step-by-step early-game spending plan

  1. Bank at the first safe Lantern. Convert the Catalysts you are carrying before testing an unfamiliar route.
  2. Name your primary failure. Decide whether deaths come from stamina exhaustion, insufficient health, weak transmutation output, or a weapon that takes too long to finish an enemy.
  3. Choose one core-stat direction. Use stamina for parry, dodge and finisher chains; health for a learning margin; supernatural power when transmutations drive the build.
  4. Commit workbench materials to one carry. Keep the weapon whose moves you use most and upgrade it rather than distributing materials evenly.
  5. Buy only a problem-solving skill. Select crowd control, mobility, offense or recovery according to the next route or encounter.
  6. Test the package for several encounters. A single unlucky death is not enough evidence to rebuild. Look for the same failure recurring.
  7. Return to a Lantern before the next risky push. Spend newly earned Catalysts so the recovery risk never grows larger than necessary.

Mid-game decisions: stat, weapon or transmutation?

When several upgrades are affordable, compare them on six axes: immediate survival, damage in your real attack loop, stamina or resource efficiency, access to traversal or crowd control, material and Catalyst opportunity cost, and reversibility through respec.

If you observe this Preferred investment Reason
You die before you can perform the weapon’s intended sequence. Health or stamina, depending on the failure. More raw damage has no value if the sequence never completes.
Your bar empties during parry-to-finisher or dodge chains. Stamina. The resource is limiting execution of the core combat loop.
You survive reliably and the workbench shows a meaningful increase on your carry. Weapon upgrade. It improves the attacks you already land without changing your build.
A route is blocked by a ledge, shortcut or movement requirement. Mobility transmutation, unless the ability is a story or secret-area reward. Access can be worth more than incremental damage.
Groups overwhelm you before you can isolate targets. Crowd-control transmutation or the stat that powers it. Control changes the number of threats you must handle at once.
A boss exposes a short, repeatable damage window. Offensive transmutation or focused weapon damage. Choose the option that increases damage during the window without breaking stamina management.
You reach long routes with too few resources to finish. Recovery utility or health. It increases the probability that a successful run reaches the next Lantern.

These are decision rules, not published numerical breakpoints. No named statistics establish a universal Catalyst-per-damage or Catalyst-per-survival ratio, so avoid treating any level as mathematically optimal for every player.

How to use respec without wasting Catalysts

Lanterns allow you to respec, making a poor allocation correctable. The price is paid in Catalysts and rises with prior levelling, so respec is a correction tool rather than a reason to change builds after every failed boss attempt.

A sensible respec trigger

Respec when you can identify a persistent mismatch: for example, you invested heavily in a transmutation style you no longer use, or your weapon plan consistently demands a stamina budget your current stats cannot provide. One failed attempt is noise; repeated failures with the same cause are evidence.

Prepare before confirming

  1. Record your current stats, weapon, transmutations and Amber choices.
  2. Describe the failure in one sentence that can be tested, such as “I cannot finish the parry chain before stamina reaches zero.”
  3. Design the replacement around that sentence rather than copying a generic build.
  4. Check the Lantern’s respec cost and leave enough Catalysts for the first replacement purchase.
  5. Run the new setup long enough to test ordinary encounters and at least one difficult fight.

Because the price increases with prior levelling, repeated small experiments compound the cost. Make a meaningful change, test it, then keep it if it solves the stated problem.

Common spending mistakes and their fixes

Carrying a large Catalyst balance into a new area

Why it fails: death leaves the currency at the death location and a failed recovery can erase the pool.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix: bank at the nearest Lantern before a risky route and treat unspent Catalysts as an exposed liability.

Splitting workbench materials among every weapon

Why it fails: no weapon reaches a useful damage level quickly, while your familiar carry remains weaker than it could be.

Fix: concentrate materials on the weapon that ends encounters most reliably; diversify only when another weapon solves a demonstrated problem.

Buying a skill because it is available

Why it fails: a skill without a route, enemy group or boss window to exploit consumes Catalysts without changing your results.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix: classify the next obstacle as crowd control, mobility, offense or recovery and buy the matching solution.

Choosing health when stamina is the real bottleneck

Why it fails: a larger health bar cannot let you parry, dodge or finish after your resource is exhausted.

Fix: watch the resource bar during the exact sequence that fails and invest in stamina when exhaustion, not incoming damage, ends the attempt.

Respecing after every death

Why it fails: the rising respec price consumes the same currency needed to strengthen the next build.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix: wait for a repeatable failure pattern, then make one deliberate rebuild.

Putting it all together: a repeatable Lantern routine

Use this short routine whenever you return from an exploration run:

  • Secure: spend enough Catalysts that a death will not erase a major bank.
  • Diagnose: identify the one repeated failure from the last route.
  • Compare: check the next stat level, the workbench increase on your carry, and any skill that directly addresses that failure.
  • Verify: make sure a desired ability is not obtainable through story or a secret area before paying for it.
  • Commit: choose one main upgrade and keep the remaining currency for the next Lantern or a clearly defined purchase.
  • Test: return to the same type of encounter and see whether the problem has actually changed.

The result is a build that grows in the order your play demands: survivability when learning, stamina when execution is constrained, supernatural power when transmutations carry the plan, concentrated weapon damage when the workbench offers a meaningful increase, and skills only when they open a route or solve a fight. That is how to make every Catalyst serve the next decision instead of merely raising a number.
