Use Task Manager to see whether CPU, memory, or disk use is consistently high before deciding on more disruptive steps. These checks are free and reversible; they can help with software-related slowdowns, but cannot overcome every hardware limit.
1. Install Windows updates and check for malware
Updates can include fixes and performance improvements. Open Settings > Windows Update and install available updates. Check for optional driver updates there too, if offered for your device.

Next, run a quick scan: open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Quick scan. Malware can use processor and disk resources, so a scan is a useful early check. Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance covers updates, malware scans, storage and other built-in measures.

2. Check storage and free space carefully
Low available storage can affect performance. Open Settings > System > Storage to see what is using space. Review the categories before deleting anything, then use Storage Sense or remove temporary files you no longer need. Uninstall apps you recognize and no longer use; moving large personal files elsewhere can also free room.

For temporary files, check the selected categories before confirming removal. In particular, deleting the Windows.old folder removes the option to return to the previous Windows version. Microsoft explains the cleanup options and their effects in Free up drive space in Windows.
If personal files are the main space problem, an external drive can provide somewhere to move them. That addresses capacity; buying storage alone does not establish that the laptop will run faster if its bottleneck is the processor or memory.
3. Reduce unnecessary startup and background activity
Disable only startup apps you recognize
Apps that launch automatically can make startup slower and continue using resources. Open Task Manager > Startup apps, review the list, and disable only apps you recognize and do not need to start with Windows. If the app’s purpose is unclear, leave it enabled until you identify it. Microsoft’s startup-app instructions describe the available controls.

Find unusually heavy resource use
In Task Manager, check Processes and Performance for CPU, memory and disk activity. Close an app only if you are not using it and recognize it; ending unfamiliar processes can disrupt Windows or other software. A single high reading while an app is busy is not necessarily a problem. Look for resource use that stays high during ordinary work and corresponds with the slowdown.
Windows also provides background-app controls in Settings, though exact options can vary by Windows version and device. Microsoft’s performance guidance includes background activity as one area to review.
4. Try Best performance mode only when the tradeoff suits you
On Windows 11, open Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode and select Best performance when responsiveness matters more than battery life. Microsoft says this mode may let the CPU run at higher performance when needed, but it can use more power, drain the battery faster and make the laptop warmer. It is not a battery-saving setting. Available labels and options can vary by device.

5. Judge whether the slowdown is a hardware limit
If everyday tasks keep getting slower after updates, cleanup and startup changes, inspect Task Manager again during normal use. Consistently high CPU, memory or disk activity may point to a limit that these software steps cannot fix. Long startup or shutdown, low storage capacity and frequent fan noise are additional signs that an older PC may be nearing its useful limits. Microsoft lists these kinds of symptoms in How to know it’s time for a new PC.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo not assume RAM or the internal drive can be upgraded: whether those components are replaceable depends on the laptop model. If storage is the issue, first determine whether moving files or uninstalling unused apps is enough; external storage can create room but will not resolve a processor or memory bottleneck.
6. Treat reset or reinstall as a later option
A reset is more disruptive than the checks above. Depending on the recovery choice, it can remove apps, settings or personal files. Back up important files before starting, and use the least disruptive recovery option that fits the problem. Microsoft’s Windows recovery options explain the choices and their effects.
Windows 10 support status
Microsoft states that free Windows 10 software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance and security fixes ended after October 14, 2025, and recommends moving to Windows 11. That support milestone does not itself explain a slow laptop; assess performance using the checks above. See Microsoft’s Windows performance guidance for its support statement and troubleshooting steps.
