How to Connect a Smart TV to Wi-Fi and Fix Common Connection Problems

Connect your TV through its network settings, then diagnose whether a failed connection comes from the password, signal, router, internet service, or model-specific Wi-Fi support.

To connect a smart TV to Wi-Fi, open its network or connection settings, choose the Wi-Fi setup option, select your home network, and enter the password. Menu names vary by brand, model, and software version. If the TV says it is connected but apps cannot get online, test another device on the same network before troubleshooting the TV: a Wi-Fi connection to the router does not guarantee internet access.

How to connect a smart TV to Wi-Fi

  1. Open the TV’s Settings menu and look for Network, Connection, or a similarly named option.
  2. Choose the wireless or Wi-Fi setup option and select your home network from the list.
  3. Enter the Wi-Fi password carefully, then confirm the connection. Check that you selected the intended network, especially if several names appear similar.
  4. If the TV offers a network or connection test, run it and note whether the wireless connection and internet access both pass.

The exact menu path depends on the TV. LG’s troubleshooting instructions, for example, provide different paths for different webOS versions; Roku also separates its connection check from its connection-reset options. Use your TV’s own support instructions if the labels above do not match. See LG’s TV internet troubleshooting guide and Roku’s Wi-Fi setup guidance.

Why a TV can be connected to Wi-Fi but have no internet

“Connected to Wi-Fi” usually means the TV has joined the router’s wireless network. The router may still be unable to reach the internet, or the TV may be having a separate connection problem. A connection test that reports wireless access and internet access separately can help identify which part failed.

  1. Try a phone or computer on the same Wi-Fi and open a public website.
  2. If that device also cannot get online, the problem may be the router, modem or gateway, or internet service—not just the TV.
  3. If other devices work normally but the TV does not, focus on the TV’s network selection, saved password, signal, and model-specific settings.

For Roku devices, the connection test and its results are described in Roku’s network connection guide. Other TV brands may label or present their tests differently.

What to try when your TV will not connect to Wi-Fi

Check the network name and password

Confirm the TV is trying to join the right network, then re-enter the password. A typo, an old saved password, or selecting a nearby network with a similar name can stop the connection. Roku lists incorrect credentials among common causes of Wi-Fi connection errors in its connection troubleshooting guidance.

Restart the TV, router, and modem or gateway

Restart the TV or streaming device, then restart the router and modem or gateway according to their manufacturers’ instructions. A restart is an early troubleshooting step in Roku’s Wi-Fi improvement guidance. If you unplug equipment, follow its instructions and allow it to reconnect before testing the TV again.

Improve the wireless signal

A weak or inconsistent signal can interrupt streaming even when the TV can see the network. Where practical, reduce the distance or obstacles between the TV and router, and consider whether walls, nearby interference, or network congestion may be affecting the connection. If the TV or its connection test reports signal quality, use that result as a clue. Roku describes connection checks and signal troubleshooting in its network test guide and wireless improvement guide.

Check whether the TV supports the router’s Wi-Fi band

Some TVs support only 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi; others support 5 GHz as well. If your router offers separate network names for those bands, try the other one only if the TV supports it. Do not assume that every smart TV can use 5 GHz. Sony explains that a TV without 5 GHz support can use 2.4 GHz in its Wi-Fi connection help; Samsung also notes that certain older TVs are limited to 2.4 GHz in its Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide.

A TV that cannot see a 5 GHz network is not necessarily faulty. Roku notes that some devices cannot use certain 5 GHz DFS channels. Check the exact TV and router documentation before changing router channel settings.

Why your TV will not find your Wi-Fi network

  • Check the band: the TV may not support the band used by that network. Confirm the TV’s supported bands in its model-specific guide.
  • Check the router’s configuration: a network using a channel or setting the TV does not support may not appear. Consult both manufacturers’ guidance before changing router settings.
  • Check signal and placement: distance, obstacles, or interference may make a network difficult for the TV to detect reliably. Improve the wireless path where practical and scan again.

Because wireless-band and channel support vary by model, use the manufacturer’s exact guidance rather than treating one router setting as universal. See the Sony Wi-Fi help and Samsung network troubleshooting page.

Should you use Wi-Fi or Ethernet?

If the TV has an Ethernet port and you can run a cable to the router, test a wired connection. It can provide a more stable link than Wi-Fi and helps determine whether the wireless setup is the source of the problem. Roku says, “If your Roku player or TV has an Ethernet port, try using a wired connection as it’s more stable than Wi-Fi.” See Roku’s connection troubleshooting guide. The option applies only to TVs with a compatible port and a reachable router.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wi-Fi avoids a cable run, but its reliability depends on the signal at the TV’s location and on the TV’s supported bands. When comparing the two, consider whether Ethernet is available, whether the cable can reach the router, and whether the TV’s results change when wired.

How much internet speed does streaming need?

Roku Support lists these general download-speed figures for streaming: SD, 3 Mbps; HD, 5 Mbps; and 4K Ultra HD, 25 Mbps or more. The page does not state a publication year, and Roku notes that individual streaming apps may have their own requirements. Treat these as Roku’s guidance, not a universal guarantee. Speed alone also does not diagnose a weak wireless signal or an intermittent connection. See Roku’s connection check and speed guidance.

When to contact your internet provider or TV manufacturer

  • Other devices also cannot get online: check for an internet service outage or contact your internet provider after checking the router and modem or gateway.
  • Only the TV fails: consult the manufacturer’s troubleshooting instructions for the exact model and software version.
  • Basic fixes have not helped: a factory reset should be a last resort because it erases device settings. Roku places it after other troubleshooting steps in its connection improvement guidance.

Menu labels, available tests, and wireless features differ across brands and models. Roku’s linked setup guidance is for Australia, its connection-error guidance for Canada, and its detailed improvement and connection-check pages for the UK; local menus, service contacts, and device features may vary.
