How to Solve UI/UX Design Challenges with Evidence and Inclusive Testing

UI/UX problems are best solved as investigation-and-improvement work, not as a hunt for visual mistakes. Start by identifying what people need to accomplish, gather evidence from research and service data, design for accessibility and different screen sizes, test the riskiest interactions with real users, and retest every significant change. This approach exposes barriers that a polished mock-up or an end-of-project checklist can miss.

What UI/UX design challenges really are

A UI challenge is a problem with the interface people see and operate: unclear labels, controls that are hard to find, poor feedback after an action, unreadable text, or a layout that breaks at another width. A UX challenge is broader. It can involve the whole journey, including whether users understand the service, choose the right path, recover from errors, and complete their goal in a realistic context.

The two overlap. A confusing form label is a UI defect and a UX barrier if it causes people to submit the wrong information. A service can look attractive yet fail because its terminology does not match users’ expectations. Treat each reported “design issue” as a question to investigate: Who is blocked? Which task are they attempting? What evidence shows the problem? What change could remove the barrier, and how will the team know that it worked?

Begin with user needs instead of a preferred screen

Teams often start with a feature request, a competitor’s layout, or an internal opinion about what the interface should look like. That reverses the order of decisions. GOV.UK’s Government Design Principles and Service Manual guidance recommend understanding users, their goals, current behavior, and the way an existing service works before committing to a solution. Research and data should replace assumptions, and learning should continue after launch.

Define the task and context

Write a short problem statement before sketching screens. Identify the user group, the outcome they need, the circumstances in which they act, and the consequence of failure. “A customer needs to change a delivery date on a phone while travelling” is more useful than “we need a better account page.” Record what is known and what is only a hypothesis. This prevents a team from treating an untested preference as a requirement.

Choose evidence that answers the question

Use interviews or observation to understand goals and existing workarounds; analytics to find abandonment, repeated errors, or unusual paths; and usability studies to watch people attempt a task. No single method answers every question. Analytics may show that users leave a form, but observation can reveal that a date field is misunderstood. Include people with different abilities, devices, languages, levels of confidence, and connectivity when those differences affect the service.

Keep learning after release

A design decision is not permanently validated because a prototype tested well. Monitor live-service data, support contacts, error reports, and accessibility feedback where available. A new audience, content change, browser update, or policy change can introduce a fresh barrier. GOV.UK’s principles explicitly call for continued testing and iteration rather than a one-time approval.

Make accessibility part of the design, not a final inspection

Accessibility and usability are related but not identical. Technical conformance standards are essential, yet meeting a standard does not automatically make a task understandable or efficient. W3C Web Accessibility Initiative guidance describes accessibility, usability, and inclusion as overlapping disciplines and recommends combining standards-based checks with usability methods and participation by people with disabilities.

Design with real access needs in mind

Include disabled people in research and test with the assistive technologies relevant to the audience. Depending on the service, that may include a screen reader, keyboard-only navigation, screen magnification, voice input, switch access, captions, or a mobile device’s built-in accessibility settings. Ask participants to complete realistic tasks rather than merely inspecting a page. Observe whether they can find the control, understand its state, enter information, recover from an error, and confirm completion.

Do not confuse a component library with accessibility

The GOV.UK Design System states: “Using the GOV.UK Design System in a service does not immediately make that service accessible.” Its accessible styles, components, and patterns provide a baseline, but each service still requires additional research, design, development, and testing. The same principle applies to any design system. A component can be implemented incorrectly, used in an unsuitable context, or combined with content that creates a barrier.

GOV.UK’s accessibility strategy notes that at least 1 in 5 people report having a disability in the UK. That figure is specific to the UK statement and should not be generalized to every country or audience. It nevertheless illustrates why accessibility is a core service requirement rather than a niche enhancement.

Prioritize barriers by impact

When a review identifies many issues, rank them by the task they block, the number and type of people affected, the severity of harm, and the strength of the evidence. A missing keyboard focus indicator that prevents navigation deserves urgent attention. A minor spacing inconsistency that does not affect comprehension may wait. Document the rationale so prioritization is transparent and can be revisited when new evidence appears.

Design for screen sizes, not for a device stereotype

A layout designed only for a named phone, tablet, or desktop can fail at the widths between those categories. Content may wrap into awkward lines, controls may become too small to operate, or a two-column form may force horizontal scrolling. GOV.UK layout guidance recommends beginning with a small-screen, single-column layout and adapting it for different screen sizes.

Start with the narrowest useful layout

Place the most important content and action in a single readable flow first. Then expand the layout only when the additional space improves comprehension or efficiency. Test intermediate widths, not just the smallest and largest screenshots. Check long labels, validation messages, tables, navigation, dialogs, and user-entered text because these are common points of overflow.

Control line length and reflow

For many page types, GOV.UK recommends keeping lines to no more than 75 characters to support readability. Treat that as GOV.UK-specific guidance, not a universal law. The right measure depends on language, content type, typography, and task. Verify that users can enlarge text and that content still reflows without losing information or functionality.

Test the actual conditions

Use physical devices or realistic emulation with touch, keyboard, zoom, and different orientations. Check slow connections, small screens, high contrast settings, and browser text enlargement when they match the audience. A responsive design is successful when users can complete the same task, with the same essential information and feedback, across the supported conditions.

Separate task success from visual preference

People may say that one interface “looks nicer” while still taking longer to use or making more errors. Conversely, a plain screen can perform well if its language, hierarchy, and feedback are clear. Frame design reviews around outcomes: Can users identify the next step? Do they understand the terms? Can they complete the task without avoidable errors? Can they tell what happened after submitting?

Visual quality still matters because hierarchy, contrast, spacing, and consistency support comprehension. It should support task success rather than substitute for it. In a review, ask participants to perform a task before asking what they think of the appearance. Record observable behavior and explanations, not only preference scores.

Turn findings into changes that can be retested

Usability sessions produce observations, not finished solutions. GOV.UK qualitative-testing guidance recommends translating common challenges into design opportunities or specific changes that can be tested in a subsequent round. A prototype lets a team test a risky idea before investing in production code; GOV.UK’s Prototype Kit guidance describes prototypes as a way to gather feedback and insight.

Write an actionable finding

Describe the situation, behavior, consequence, and likely opportunity. For example: “Four of six participants looked for the cancellation option under ‘Account’ rather than ‘Orders’ and abandoned the task. Test a cancellation link on the order page with plain-language confirmation.” This is more useful than “navigation was confusing.” Avoid claiming that a small sample measures prevalence; qualitative sessions reveal problems and explanations, not a population percentage.

Change one risky part at a time when possible

Prototype the label, information order, error message, or interaction that is most likely to block the task. Give participants a realistic goal and observe whether they can complete it. If the change helps, test adjacent states such as an empty form, an error, a slow response, and a completed state. If it does not help, preserve the observation, revise the hypothesis, and test again.

A repeatable workflow for solving UI/UX problems

  1. Describe the user and task. State who is acting, what they need to achieve, the context, and the consequence of failure. List assumptions separately from evidence.
  2. Gather appropriate evidence. Combine interviews, observation, analytics, support data, and usability studies according to the question. Include people with disabilities and relevant assistive technologies.
  3. Map the critical journey. Identify entry points, decisions, content, inputs, system feedback, errors, and completion. Mark where evidence shows confusion or abandonment.
  4. Prototype the riskiest parts. Test wording, navigation, content order, responsive states, and error recovery before committing to a full build.
  5. Run task-based usability sessions. Ask participants to complete realistic tasks. Test comprehension, navigation, operation, and recovery; do not rely on a general “Do you like it?” question.
  6. Check accessibility and responsive behavior. Use standards-based checks, keyboard and assistive-technology testing, text enlargement, and multiple screen sizes. Confirm that a design-system component is implemented and used appropriately.
  7. Convert observations into changes. Prioritize barriers by task impact and evidence. Assign an owner, define the expected improvement, and record what will be retested.
  8. Retest and iterate. Run another round after meaningful changes. After launch, review live data and feedback so the service can continue improving.

How to compare competing design options

When two or more designs appear plausible, compare them against the same evidence rather than choosing by seniority or taste. The cited guidance does not establish a universal numerical score, so use a documented qualitative decision record or a team-defined scale.

Decision axis Question to test Evidence to collect
Task completion Can users complete the intended task accurately and recover from errors? Observed completion paths, errors, prompts for help, and participant explanations
Accessibility Can people with different abilities and assistive technologies operate and understand it? Sessions with disabled participants, keyboard checks, and relevant assistive-technology testing
Readability and reflow Does content remain understandable when the viewport or text size changes? Small-screen and intermediate-width checks, enlarged text, wrapping and overflow observations
Evidence strength Is the decision supported by observed behavior and service data rather than preference? Research notes, analytics, support trends, and results from repeated tests

Diagnose common failure patterns

“Everyone liked the prototype, but completion is poor”

Preference is not task evidence. Re-run sessions with a concrete goal, observe the complete journey, and inspect analytics for the step where users stop or make errors. Test labels, information order, and feedback rather than redesigning the visual style first.

“The automated accessibility scan passes, but users still struggle”

Automated tools detect only some technical conditions. Test with people who have relevant disabilities and assistive technologies, then check comprehension, focus order, error recovery, and dynamic updates. Review whether the content and interaction pattern fit the task.

“The desktop design works, but mobile users abandon it”

Inspect the narrow and intermediate layouts for horizontal scrolling, clipped content, tiny targets, hidden actions, and long forms. Rebuild the information flow as a small-screen single column, then expand it deliberately at larger widths. Verify on real touch devices and slower connections when applicable.

“The team has findings but no decisions”

Rewrite each observation as a specific opportunity with an owner, expected outcome, and retest plan. Limit the next prototype to the highest-impact uncertainties. A short, focused iteration is more useful than a long list of unprioritized comments.

Practical definition of done

  • The target users, task, context, assumptions, and evidence are documented.
  • People with relevant disabilities and access needs have participated in research or evaluation.
  • The critical flow has been tested at small, intermediate, and large screen sizes.
  • Keyboard operation, focus, zoom or text enlargement, error recovery, and relevant assistive technologies have been checked.
  • Design-system components are treated as starting points and are tested in their actual context.
  • Observed barriers have owners, prioritized changes, and a scheduled retest.
  • Post-launch data and feedback have a route back into the design backlog.

Solving UI/UX challenges is therefore a continuous evidence loop: understand the task, include the people who face the greatest barriers, prototype the risky decisions, test behavior across abilities and screen sizes, and change the design when evidence demands it. That loop produces interfaces that are not merely attractive, but understandable, operable, and effective.
